ASK Will: THIS 8th GRADER Is Starting a Mowing Business!

In this YouTube Q&A, Will Kelly responds to an 8th‑grader (Kayla/Caleb) who is launching a lawn‑care business with a friend. He first asks how the teen got the initial few clients and then recommends scaling the same method—primarily door‑to‑door outreach, cheap business cards, and door‑hangers—especially during peak demand in spring, summer, and early fall. He adds low‑budget logistical ideas such as using a bike or wagon, leveraging parents for transportation, and joining neighborhood Facebook groups. After covering client acquisition, Will shifts to broader entrepreneurial wellness, urging balance across mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, and relational health to avoid burnout. He stresses mental toughness, proper nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, and seeking help when needed. Finally, he previews upcoming content focused on tactical business management and team training, indicating a move from high‑level concepts to actionable operational guidance.

Welcome back to the question submissions. And so we're going to go ahead and go through the questions. We've only got one question today from an 8th grader who's starting his lawn care business. If you guys want your questions answered, in the link below, you can go ahead and fill out a submission form, put your company name, email, question, and we'll get it answered. All right. So this one is from Kayla from Clean Cut Lawn Mowing. So he says, I'm an 8th grader starting a lawn care business with my friend. We mowed lawns for a few clients last year but did not have many clients. What is the best way to get clients? Well, there's multiple different ways, Caleb, that you can get clients. But I would ask you first off, how did you get those first few clients? Was it from a neighbor? Did you go knock on some doors? Did you put some door hangers out? Whatever you did to get that 2, 3, 4 clients to start, I'd probably double down and triple down on that. If you just got them from, you know, neighbors and word of mouth, honestly, dude, as an 8th grader, you should go door to door, just knock on doors and just be like, hey, my name's Caleb. Started a lawn business, maybe get some business cards, something super cheap. Just give them a business card with your phone number on it and put lawn mowing or something. That's probably like the simplest and easiest way to do that. Ideally, you'd want to do this when the demand is the highest, or during like the springtime when the grass is starting to grow. I have seen this effective all through the summer and even through like early fall as well. Yeah, that's probably one of the best ways. Also trying to think of like more freeways, since you probably don't have a ton of money as an 8th grader. You probably don't have maybe a vehicle. So hopefully mom and dad are maybe driving you to these appointments, but maybe see if you get inside of a neighborhood Facebook group. Thing is, is being that young, I mean, you may have to like— I've seen guys on a bike and like, like wagon, like they're pulling a wagon with their mower in the back of it and stuff like that. You know, kind of think outside of the box. But if you got somebody to take you to your appointments to mow the lawn. Yeah, I mean, just door hangers is a big one because it is— it really condenses kind of where you're at. I would definitely to do that to get the business started and off the ground. But, um, outside of that, guys, let me think about this. Maybe see— let me see if I can bring you guys some value here as we go into the spring rush. Everybody, there's something very magical about hitting all forms of wellness and well-being. Oftentimes I see a lot of people that are in the grind phase for the mowing, they just like go out and grind super, super hard. When they do that, what happens is they start to lack other areas life. Kind of a good example of this is, you know, somebody working 12-hour days and they're out there, they're hustling, they're grinding. If they have a relationship or if they're married, definitely don't deflect that. Also don't deflect your spirituality, right? Like, go to church if, if you have faith. Don't just like be so laser focused on what you're trying to do. Seriously, I'm, I'm telling you this, uh, because I see a lot of people kind of get burnt out and they just hit an obstacle. But basically overall, kind of what I'm trying to say— sorry, this is late at night, my brain's like 'cause I've been grinding all day. I just worked a 12-hour day today, right? But at the same time, I worked out in the morning. I'm eating very, very clean. I get to work with my wife, which is amazing. We get to accomplish things together. Obviously, when I wake up in the morning, I'm reading my Bible, having my time with the good Lord upstairs. And so I just wanna encourage you guys to not neglect those things because that is what true wellbeing and welfare like is. Just keep that in mind. Make sure you guys are exercising as we go into the spring rush. Make sure you guys are eating right, hydrating well. Make sure you're mentally stable. Mental toughness is a big thing. Negative thoughts, negative emotions. You need to really take control of your mind. Mental health is a real thing, by the way, which I didn't really think it was, but it is. It's real. Talking from experience. And so I just want to encourage anybody out there that's going, struggling with negative thoughts and really the enemy attacking their brain. You can and absolutely, absolutely will get through it. And you need to focus on the facts. Focus on what truly matters. We have— I think there— I think it's said that 3,000 thoughts run through somebody's brain in a single day. Be mindful of the neural pathways you're building in your brain. Like, 95% of the time when people have fear and anxiety, none of that stuff happens. And so look back on your life. Hopefully you can know that it's going to be okay. You're going to get through it. You always have up until this point. So why would it change? Then you have somebody who's fighting for you that's on your side. Yeah, I just wanted to share that with you guys. Hopefully that helps some people. You know, anybody that's doing big things, there's going to be forces against them trying to stop them. Just know that you're not alone. You know, definitely seek help if you need help. Make sure you guys take care of yourselves mentally, emotionally, spiritually, physically, relationally. It all matters. And when you lack in one of those areas, it corrupts the other areas, right? Like you have to be well-balanced. Like anybody that's not well-balanced is not going to last. I feel like I'm rambling. So hopefully this helps and wish you guys all the best through the spring rush. About to get pretty crazy here. So I'm going to obviously try to continue to put content out for you guys, bring some value. I got some good stuff coming this week with some training, and I'm trying to use some of the content that I am really training and teaching my team for the YouTube channel and also to share it with the team. So a lot of my content, hopefully soon, will start to transition to more of like managing and like really tactical stuff. A lot of times I'm up in the clouds thinking about higher level stuff, but it's time to get down to work. So just make sure you guys are taking care of your body mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, and relationally. Hope you guys all have a great Spring Rush, and, uh, yeah, may you guys prosper.
