Will Kelly says lawn-care skills can be taught, but character cannot. He hires for someone who shows up on time when no one's watching and takes pride in unseen work, over an experienced mower who cuts corners. You can teach mowing. You cannot teach care.

Skills are teachable. Character isn't. It is a non-negotiable. Mowing isn't complicated. It's not rocket science. Applying fertilizer isn't complicated. Customer service isn't complicated. These are skills, and skills can be taught to almost anyone. Character is different. Character is whether someone shows up on time when nobody's watching, whether they take pride in a job nobody will ever see, whether they represent your brand with integrity when they're alone on a customer's property. You cannot train character, you can only hire for it. Here's what I see happen: an owner hires someone with 5 years of mowing experience but no alignment with the company values. That person knows how to operate the equipment, but they cut corners, they're rude to customers, they don't care about the little details that separates a 5-star lawn service from a mediocre one. Then you hire someone with no experience, but they're hungry, they're honest, they want to be part of something bigger than themselves, that person will outpace the experienced hire every single time. Why? Because you can teach them mowing, you cannot teach them to care.
