Will Kelly shows how to start a gas-powered lawn mower correctly. For a cold start, set the choke to the bunny position, pull the handle halfway, then after 20-30 seconds move the choke back. A common mistake after an oil change: the mower is left in neutral, so shift it into gear and run in top gear for efficiency.

So as far as the fuel goes, we're going to be using regular gasoline. That is the big 5-gallon jug, and the fuel container's right here. Just go ahead and top off our fuel before we load up for the day so that way we don't have to do it in the field and we can continue to be efficient. Between a cold and warm start— a cold start is when the piece of equipment has not been ran that day. It's cold. A warm start would be if the mower has already been ran and it's warm. So there's two different kind of starts. In this scenario, this is the first start of the day. When you are starting it from a cold start where it hasn't been run before, you have to put this dial all the way up to the choke above the bunny. Then you're going to pull the handlebar halfway up and pull it. If you pull the bar all the way up, it's going to ignite the wheels and go forward. So just halfway up, give it a pull or two, it should start. Once it gets running for the first 20 or 30 seconds, then shift it off of the choke to the bunny once it gets started. So I'll go ahead and do that now. Now, as far as the speed goes down here, if you ever get out on a property and you go to pull the handlebar and you're like, why is the mower not going forward, it's more than likely that it's in neutral because it just got an oil change. We put them in neutral when we do oil changes. So recently I had somebody who went out and mowed 4 lawns pushing the mower the entire time. Had they just called us and said, hey, why is it not working? It's probably because it's not in gear. So this is how you put it in gear so that way you can make more money. So down here, uh, we normally will run them always in the top gear because we're trying to be efficient and get as many routes done as possible.
