Cold vs Warm Start: Weed Eater

Will Kelly shows how to start and run a commercial weed eater safely. Prime the fuel two or three times, engage the choke to fully open the throttle, then pull the starter. Use half throttle for routine work and full throttle only for overgrown areas, since applicants previously damaged fences by running it wide open.

This is a commercial-grade weed eater, and there's been times before where we'll have applicants come out and actually use the weed eater to be tested on the hands-on portion of the interview. And what I find is a lot of them just full throttle this thing, and the problem with that is it's so powerful that I have had it where people have literally damaged fences before in the interview. So we don't do that anymore. We now allow them to weed eat along hard surfaces so that way they don't break it. But all that to say, this piece of equipment is designed, because of the power and the velocity behind it, to be run at a 50% throttle almost all of the time. The only time that you would go full throttle is if you hit a full overgrown yard that may be knee-high. That's where you would definitely let it rip, go full throttle. But when we're doing residential yards and we're here every week or every other week, this is a 50% throttle piece of equipment, getting it started. So a cold start, you'll want to prime this button 2 or 3 times, and then on the choke here, you're going to push this in and turn it all the way 90 degrees. Now theoretically speaking, what this is doing, it's basically holding the trigger down full throttle for you so you don't have to. That's what this choke does when you do that. That's what it's acting inside of the components. So it's full full throttling the weed eater right now at a cold start. So we're going to go ahead and give it a pull. Because it was full throttling it on full choke, it actually started to spin. So be careful when you do start it. Now that it's a little bit warm, we're gonna go ahead and just put it on a half throttle, which is just right here. And again, all the half throttle is, is essentially it's holding the trigger down halfway. So it will spin when I pull this But now that it's a little bit warm, we're going to go ahead and just half throttle it. So this piece of equipment is designed to get everywhere where the mower cannot— behind AC units, around trees, around objects, along fences, in tight corners, rounding out our corners.
