How to Weed Eat Without Destroying the Property

Will Kelly shows how to weed-eat at the same height as your mower while keeping the head flat and angled like a blade, protecting fences and flower beds. Stay on the perimeter, modulate trigger speed for clean cuts, and match your mower's height to avoid callbacks.

Now I could keep going, but I know I have to get on the outside of the fence. Getting the grass cracks. Now remember, he did not get back here with the mower, so we're going to come through with the weed eater and weed eat the same height that the mower inside of me. This is where you break off the pass, come to the object, we're gonna go around it, and then we're gonna get right back on our perimeter pass so we don't forget about this or waste unnecessary steps getting to the end, turning around and be like, oh yeah, I gotta go hit the tree ring or the bed that's in the middle of the lawn. Time is money. We don't weed eat inside of flower beds or inside of tree rings or things of that nature. The weed eater is for the turf grass lawn areas of the yard. When you get into these tight corners, I'm carving it out. Mower's going to come through and they're going to just keep moving. Okay, we don't want to push it up and back and forth. Also, you can see these— this grass that's growing up the pole. What we want to try to do is get all of that stuff, but we also don't want to damage the fence. So again, trigger speed matters. A little bit of up and down motion will get most of it, and it'll avoid a lot of callbacks. When you're weed eating, imagine this whip like it's a mower blade. Most of the time you're holding the whip to where it's flat. It's cutting flat. We want it even. If you angle it this way, the left side is gonna be shorter and the right side's gonna be taller. If you're on a hard concrete where you know the whip is not going to damage it, we need to be level. We need to be cutting the same exact height that we're mowing and get it in one pass just like this if this thing was spinning, okay? If we start to come to a delicate piece, this is a delicate piece. You can see there's whiplash there already, okay? This is where you might need to angle the whip down where it actually goes underneath it so you're not damaging, chipping the wood. This yard in particular is nice because they have this nice big supportive board. They all don't have that. Some of them are more delicate. And so if you have the ability to have the whip go underneath the fence, I'm okay if you guys do a little bit of an angle here to where this side will be a little bit shorter. But if you angle the whip to the left a little bit, it'll open up the right side so that way it's still the same height as the mower. I'll kind of show you what that looks like. As you can see, I'm getting underneath the fence, but I'm not like butchering the grass.
