How Top Earners Weed Eat: Faster Routes, Less Complaints, Bigger Checks

Will Kelly teaches commercial lawn-care crews how to weed-eat faster and avoid complaints. Use 50% throttle for general trimming, 15-20% around signs, and walk in a clockwise route without backtracking. Angle the trimmer to keep debris off vehicles and irrigation caps.

All right, next piece of equipment is the weed eater. When you take it off the truck, you want to immediately start right here where we are at. Now we're going to go clockwise around the property. Now we have an irrigation cap over there and irrigation cap over there. While I'm crossing the sidewalk, I'm looking for grass cracks, okay, those things that are growing. I'm also looking at the curb sometimes, like right here there's some grass cracks that need to be hit. We got to make sure that we're angling it a certain way. Now, this piece of equipment right now does not have a guard on it. Every single weed eater must have a guard on it, so we'll make sure that we put a guard on this when we get back to the shop. That way we're not flinging rocks at vehicles and equipment that are around here. You should always be walking forward with the piece of equipment. When you get into tight corners, you need to round it out for the mower and get really everywhere where the mower can't. I see a lot of guys come out here that are weed eating and they go back and forth. Every time you go back, you're doubling the time it takes you. You should be able to have good trigger speed at 50% and get everything in one pass.
So as far as flinging the grass, I'm going to fling this up. If I angle it this way, it's going to go forward. If I angle it this way, it's going to go towards this way. Now I've got vehicles back here I'm going to angle it to the right. I'm going to go forward. Same thing here. I got a vehicle in front of me.
I'm going to angle it to the left so it shoots it back over my shoulder.
Another irrigation cap. Oh, we have a grass track here, so this is the perfect opportunity when we're crossing over to hit the grass track.
I carved out the AC unit because that's not where the mower was able to go. It went down, took a took a turn, so I carved that out because it's a very tight space. That's what this is designed for. The other thing, if you come across irrigation caps like this, we want to kind of clean those up with the weed eater. We always want to weed eat the same height as the mower. If you ever come across bricks like this, this is a perfect opportunity to bump more string if you need it. Don't do it in the grass, it'll cause damage to the lawn. This piece of equipment is at 50% throttle until you get to something like this that is delicate. Light Wires, cables, stuff like this. You don't want to be full throttling or half throttling it around this stuff because it's going to cause damage.
Same thing right here.
When we get to our yard signs, I don't want to have to pick up every yard sign of every lawn that I cut. I cut 20 lawns a day. It's a lot of picking up and bending down. If you can hold the trigger speed at 15 or 20% throttle, you'll be able to delicately get around it without shredding it or having to pick it up.
Also going up and down with it, just, just ever so slightly. We'll get you a better cleanup. Same thing here, 25% throttle. I can't tell you, when you guys come through and you smash this stuff, they can hear it inside very, very loud.
On a hard concrete surface, you should be able to get it in one pass. If you have to keep going back and forth, you're wasting time. One pass, you should be able to get it all. I'm weed eating the same height as the mower. When I stick my fingers down here and you look at the weed eating, it's, it's too— it's, it's here, right? This is— I just weeded it here. It's right here. Same thing in the grass. Look at the grass, is a little bit longer. So I can't tell you how many times people come through and weedy and it's basically like this. There's like, there's nothing there anymore because we cut it too low. We're here every week, guys. We need a little bit to cut next week, so don't chop it all off in one visit.
