Abu Lahya: How To Create Habits #muslim #entrepreneur #business #islam

Abu Lahya explains how timing ruins habit formation. Punishing a teen immediately for coming home late backfires: they learn to avoid home, not to arrive on time. Wait until emotions settle, then give feedback calmly. That's how lasting habits actually stick.
Chapters
How do you create behavior? Like, how does something become a habit, whether it's a good or bad habit? Or how do you create someone having resentment or being happy with doing this kind of thing? It's usually with cause and effect. Let's say your kid is like 18, comes home at 11:30 PM, and you can see he's been like just doing weird stuff the whole day. He's not supposed to be here. The way you will address it at that time would trigger a certain understanding of the situation on his side. As in, I came home at 11 PM, the first thing my daddy did is smack me in the face. So next time if it's 11 and I'm about to come home, I'm gonna think back, if I'm gonna get home, that's what's gonna happen, I'm gonna slap him in the face. That kid next time is gonna actually not go home, he's gonna go somewhere else. You don't want to attach the punishment to the thing that just happened now. He just came home. If you address on the spot, you punished him for just coming home. He will not come home. Whereas another thing such as just you open the door, he's still in his house. That requires a lot of handling your emotions, not letting it be, because you want to beat him up. It's like, okay, You can be disappointed, etc., but let him get in the house. He's getting in, let it be. We'll talk tomorrow, inshallah. Let the guy sit there. The next day he's back, everything is normal. Then you can address it. And now he realizes what happened, why it happened that way. And next time he's going to understand it's an actual comfortable environment where I made a mistake and I got punished for the mistake, not for like coming in and talking about the mistake, etc.
