Most Muslims Waste Laylatul Qadr (Here’s How To Do It Right)

In this conversational episode, the host (Speaker B) and a scholar (Speaker A) discuss the extraordinary significance of Laylatul Qadr, the "Night of Power" that falls within the last ten nights of Ramadan. They begin by emphasizing the reward of the night—equivalent to 1,000 months (over 83 years) of worship—using vivid business analogies to illustrate its magnitude. The dialogue then moves to scriptural foundations: the Quranic revelation of the entire Qur’an on this night, and a series of authentic sahih hadiths (from Bukhari, Muslim, and other early scholars) that locate the night in the last ten nights, highlight the emphasis on odd nights, and note that the exact date rotates each year. They argue that because the precise night changes, Muslims must strive to worship every night of the last ten, not just the popularly‑cited 27th. Practical advice follows: stay up for qiyam, give sadaqah, perform extra prayers, make tawbah, and treat the night as a once‑in‑a‑lifetime business opportunity—maximizing effort rather than seeking a minimum. The speakers lament common pitfalls—people skipping the night due to work, laziness, or misconceptions—and share personal anecdotes of missed opportunities. They conclude with a stark reminder of the eternal stakes: the reward benefits the believer in the grave, the Day of Judgment, and the Hereafter, while missing the night forfeits a chance that may never return. Throughout, the conversation blends scholarly references, motivational business metaphors, and urgent spiritual exhortation to ensure listeners seize Laylatul Qadr.
Chapters
For each action, imagine the reward.
So if you feed someone during Laylatul Qadr, that's as if you fed someone for 83 years.
83 years.
I mean, imagine if you had a job where your boss told you, I'll give you double your salary for the hours you worked. People would work 10 hours a day every single day, and that's just doubling your salary.
Many people miss it and they never see another Laylatul Qadr. We had people that I know personally, we would tell them, hey, we're going to be having a program in the masjid. We're going to be having tarawih, we're going to be staying all night, come join us. And they'd be like, I'm working. You know, subhanAllah, one of them we just buried right before this Ramadan. Young brother. Now think about that. He will never get that opportunity. Now comes the question, when is it? We know from authentic sahih hadith—
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. Welcome to a new episode. This is a new set specifically for the last 10 nights, inshallah. And moving forward from today, any of the next few nights could be Laylatul Qadr, a night worth over 1,000 months. That's over 83 years of reward hiding in one single night, Sheikh.
Subhanallah, that's amazing. I'm pumped, I'm excited. The last 10 nights of Ramadan are my favorite part of the year. Ramadan is obviously my favorite month of the year, but the last 10 nights, they are off the hook.
Why are the last 10 nights so important?
SubhanAllah, there is so much depth to this that people don't realize the value of Laylatul Qadr. First thing to understand, that Allah (SWT) revealed the entire Quran in one revelation on Laylatul Qadr.
SubhanAllah.
As we see in Surah Qadr, that Allah (SWT) revealed the Quran in it. What does that mean? Because we know the Quran was revealed over 23 years of the life of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), in accordance to the asbab and nuzool, like what was going on, in accordance to how it was revealed, so we know what's going on and how to implement the Quran. But Allah (SWT) in Surah Qadr tells us that Allah (SWT) revealed the Quran in Laylatul Qadr. Ibn Abbas (RA), as Imam al-Tabari has authentically reported from him, he said the Quran, it was revealed in 3 stages. What were those stages? One, that Allah (SWT) dictated it to the Luhal Mafudh, it was written, preserved, and is with Allah (SWT) and can never be changed or touched, preserved, with many other things. Then second, in one night it was revealed from Allah (SWT) down to Baitul Izzah, which is in the first samaa. And this was on Laylatul Qadr. So Laylatul Qadr is such a powerful, important night. Third stage of revelation is that it was revealed from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala through Jibreel (AS) to Rasulullah (SAW) over 23 years of his life. So second stage was in one night, and that was the night of Laylatul Qadr. Now Laylatul Qadr not only has that sharf, that honor that the Quran was revealed in it, but it's also a night when decree, when the qadr is ordained Qadr is with Allah (SWT), but the orders are given out to the angels and so on. And this is the night where Allah (SWT) frees many people from the Gharb. This is the night where Allah (SWT) increases our reward. First thing, earlier you said something very powerful, and people miss this, which is that it is like 1,000 months.
And there's an ayah in the Quran that speaks about it.
Yes, of course. Qadr, Al-Fashar, a thousand months, right? But think about that as a businessman. You tell me, if you say that, you know, here if you sell your product, you can sell it for a dollar per product. Yeah. And let's say you sell 100,000 units, you make $100,000. But if I told you that, look, if you wait for the market to drop and at this time it's going to have the demand is going to pick up and you could sell the same product for $1,000.
Yeah, subhanAllah.
$1,000 instead of $1 per product, your profit would be a thousandfold. Imagine what you would get.
Wait, actually, Sheikh, no, that's laylatul qadr khairun min al fisar. It's 1,000 months.
Months.
So it's one night that's worth more than 1,000 months. Months. And the month is 30 days.
Exactly.
That's $30,000.
That's even more, right? I mean, if you could— because you're talking about one action gives you that kind of reward, right? But let's take it step by step. Let's just take it to $1,000 first, right? Now imagine that if you could sell that product for $1,000, how much would your profit be? So if you sold 1,000 units, right, times $1,000, you're making $1 million.
SubhanAllah.
6 zeros.
Like that's— people take advantage of Black Friday because exactly this is like 30,000% discount.
Think about this, it's not 1,000 amal, it's 1,000 months. That means it's not just 30 days to a month, which 29 to 30 days with a month, that means you're going to multiply that action by another 30, right? But on top of that That's a whole day. We're talking about person.
Yes, there's more to it.
There's more to it, right? More than 83 years, 3 months, and 3 days, 8.333, so on, right? For each action, imagine the reward.
So if you feed someone during Laylatul Qadr, yes, that's as if you fed someone for 83 years.
83 years.
If you pray 2 units, that's as if you pray 2 units every day for 83 years.
More than 83 years, right? Now imagine a whole day of Amal, a whole day of Ibada. You're getting unimaginable.
You couldn't even do it in your lifetime.
Exactly. But what is amazing to me is not that. What shocks me is people sleep through it. People miss it. It could be tonight.
How do we know?
It could be tomorrow night. That's a great question. Once we understand the virtue of it, we need to catch it.
I mean, if it's worth 1,000 months, I'm ready to not sleep for 10 days. I'm going to get on coffee all night.
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), Abu Lahya used to do that, as Aisha (ra) said, that he would tighten his izar, meaning he would strengthen himself for ibadah. In the last nights, he would not come to the bed, he would be away from his wives, and he would be spending it in ibadah, focused in the last 10 nights of Ramadan. Now, think about this from a business perspective, because you're a businessman, a lot of your people watching are businessmen. If you knew that there was a window of opportunity, let's say in a particular month, that you could sell that product more than 1,000 times of a profit, would you make sure no matter what that you don't miss that?
I would cancel everything around it. I would, I would not care about the slightest thing that could happen.
I would put a reminder a year before because instead of making $1,000, you would make more than a million. Yeah, right. We times that by 30, like we said, times that by not just the day but the Amal and so on. $30 million. You could be set for the rest of the year, the rest of your life, the rest of— just by making good profit on that one night.
And if you miss it, that's the part. If you imagine on a business perspective, because it helps you understand.
Yeah.
Imagine you miss that million dollar day and you're making $1,000. That would take you 83 years to get back to it. That's so crazy.
Working one night in comparison to working 83+ years.
I mean, no-brainer. Imagine, no-brainer. 83 years is even more than most people's lifespan. You could work your whole life or work one day, one night. Would you miss that day?
Never.
Interesting, right?
Never take that chance. So now comes the question: when is it? Yeah, we know from authentic Sahih Hadith that it's in the last 10 nights of Ramadan. That means any one of the last 10 nights could be Laylatul Qadr. So that means you don't miss any one of the last 10 nights, not the even, not the odd, we don't miss any of them.
Because people say it's maybe just the 27th one, people say it's odd numbers.
This is a mistake.
Okay, so it can be any of the last 10 nights.
It could be any of the last 10 nights.
Can you share with us the evidence with this so that people can understand?
So in the Sahih Hadith, that Imam Bukhari has mentioned is sahih, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said, look for it in the last 10 nights, specifically in the odd nights.
Specifically, he didn't say only in the odd ones, he said any of the last 10 nights, specifically the odd ones.
So it gives an emphasis to the last odd nights, but not necessarily, could be one of the even nights. So people that slack on the even nights, you could miss that opportunity. Now, there is a hadith of Ubay Ibn Ka'b (ra) where he said in Sahih Muslim that he said that it was the 27th night that he noticed it. He saw the signs that the Prophet (saw) had given about it and he had noticed it to be on the 27th night. But there is also a hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (ra), also Sahih hadith, where he said the Prophet (saw) saw it in a dream and he told the Sahaba that the night before it was the odd night, and that was the 21st night.
Is it the same night every year?
There is a good question you're getting to. There is also other ahadith of Sahaba (صحaba رضي الله عنه) pointing it out on the 25th. And Abu Hurairah (عبد الله عليه وسلم) saying the 21st, 23rd, 25th, or 27th, right? So putting all of those together, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (عبد الله عليه وسلم), Imam al-Shafi'i (عشافى), Imam Malik and other Ahlul Imam from the earliest generations. After them, the likes of Sheikh-ul-Islam Taqiuddin Ibn Taymiyyah, Imam al-Nawawi. After them, Shaykh al-Albani and Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen and others. They held the view that it rotates.
So every year it's different.
Yes.
Interesting.
See, what people don't realize that there are different calendars that come together. For example, Ramadan. According to the solar calendar, when is it?
It changes by 10 days every year.
It changes by 11 days every year. So sometimes it will be February, sometimes March, sometimes April, sometimes— right? Meaning that those overlap. Now Laylatul Qadr was something that Allah (SWT) ordained to be holy even before the lunar calendar was set, even before the solar calendar was set. Right? So how does it overlap with the calendar? What is the strongest opinion looking at all these authentic evidences? That it changes every year. So what does that mean? That means you cannot miss any of the last 10 nights.
That's a very good concept though. That means that pushes us to do it every day.
Exactly.
That we make sure we don't miss it.
So we don't get lazy and think, okay, most people think it's the 27th and they just think that's it. But we have authentic hadith where the Prophet saw it, and on the 21st night.
SubhanAllah, that's a very interesting point because the emphasis is— and it kind of motivates you to do the right behavior every day, because if you miss any of the last 10 nights, then you might miss Laylatul Qadr. But best case scenario, if you pray each of them, not only you're guaranteed to catch Laylatul Qadr, but also you get 9 other nights of benefit during Ramadan.
Alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah. And this is a problem with the Ummah today, that people slack. And only the 27th night you'll see the masjid is packed out the door, and then on the 29th, on the 25th, on the 23rd, the 21st, there's not that many people. And then, subhanAllah, many people miss that great immense reward because they get lazy with this.
Yes, it's very good you mentioned this because I've seen sometimes some people pray Taraweeh only when they were busy, they would not be able to pray throughout the whole month, specifically the last 10 nights. They would pray only the odd days. They would take that extra time, less sleep, etc., compensate for work only on the odd nights. But now we just know that they actually have to do for all the nights if they want to be sure.
I mean, from— this is the first day of Ramadan, so from last night onwards it could be Laylatul Qadr. So that means everybody watching, the next 9 nights you got to push yourself, right?
And is there any minimal actions we need to do?
There is no minimum maximum here. This is a night that is giving you an opportunity of 83 years, 3 months, 3 days, 3 hours, and so on. How can you think of a minimum? You got to think maximum. This is the night you got to go all out. These 10 nights, you got to push yourself. Well, you got to take time off, whatever. Think of from a business perspective.
Yeah, I mean, imagine if you had the job where your boss told you, I'll give you double your salary for the hours you worked, I'll give you triple your salary. People would work, and you would say, but it would only be for one of the days during the month. People would work 10 hours a day every single day, and that's just doubling your salary.
So think about doubling, tripling, quadrupling, to the point that your boss tells you that in 83 years of your life every penny that you were going to make, I'll give it to you for working one night. But it could be any one of these 10 nights. Would you miss anything?
Not at all. I would stay every single night.
Now think of, I mean, you're a businessman, right? Think of it this way. Okay, if you could sell your product and instead of making $1,000, you would make $1 million per transaction, how many transactions would you want to make?
As many as I can.
Exactly. There is no minimum.
Yeah, I know.
You would say, look, if there is no cap, Yeah, like if there is no limit, yeah, if the market's not going to get saturated, I'm going to sell as much as I can. Even if I got an empty inventory and borrow inventory, I'm going to sell out because this night I'm making 1,000+ more profit than any other. So that means on Laylatul Qadr, don't think minimum, think as much as I can physically push myself, I'm going to push myself the last 10 nights because I cannot miss this opportunity.
That's amazing. The way you put it together really motivates because you see it literally times a thousand. You can't miss it. Even any efforts you work towards is multiplied. That makes it so much easier to suffer the pain or the lack of sleep, etc., because you know you're like, if you do it for last 10 days, you're guaranteed to catch Laylatul Qadr.
And to your point earlier, it's not just a thousand deeds, it's a thousand months And I'll tell you this, many people miss it and they never see another Laylatul Qadr. You know, last Ramadan we had people that I know personally in my masjid that young brothers, you know, we would tell them, hey, we're going to be having a program in the masjid, we're going to be having taraweeh, we're going to be staying all night, we're making qamul layl, we're We're making itikaf, come join us. And they'd be like, I'm working, I got thing, I got a test, I got this thing, I got appointment, I got this, this. And they didn't even make it to one night in the masjid. You know, subhanallah, one of them we just buried right before this Ramadan. Young brother. Now think about that. He will never get that opportunity. It's gone now.
How old was he, if you don't mind me asking?
26.
SubhanAllah, and he, may Allah forgive him and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. That was 83 years worth of rewards. That was 4 times more than his life in one single night.
SubhanAllah. This is why it's very important for those watching not to take this as a joke, but to understand how serious this is, how important this is. Look, any test in the world you could retake. Any mistake, you could lose billions of dollars, you can make it up again. But when Malik al-Mawt comes to you and takes your soul, there is no coming back. And this worldly life is terminal, it's gonna end, no doubt. When? We have no idea. And that reward that you take with you will benefit you in the Qabar, it will benefit in the Hashar, on the Day of Judgment. It will benefit you until you get to Jannah, it will protect you from the Gharib. Wallahi, this money will do nothing for you. Unless you spent that money for the sake of Allah, unless you did Sadaqah Jariyah with it.
But you have 355 other days to do that.
Of course. But think about that, right? Meaning, if you miss these opportunities, even if you made billions of dollars, trillions of dollars. You are richer than Elon and Bezos put together and multiplied, right? But then when life ends, what are you going to do with that money?
Nothing.
But imagine if you took some of that money that Allah blessed you with and you gave sadaqah on Laylatul Qadr.
I actually have a good point on that one. I have an advice for brothers and sisters listening to this. It's my first time seeing brothers and sisters. Usually I only got brothers, but this is—
other sisters watching. You gotta mail out with everyone.
The brothers and sisters listening, there's some tools or some applications. I don't want to promote any of them, but you can find your own where it allows you to automate donations for every single night of the last 10 nights. And that makes it a habit to make sure, inshallah, whatever you feel comfortable donating, that might even be as little as a dollar. Spread it across the last 10 nights. You will catch the reward on the last 10 nights. And I gave an example of a dollar to make it easier, but make an effort. Because imagine if I told you whatever amount of money you'd give me, I'd multiply by 1,000 and give it back to you. Would you really just give me a dollar, right? Come on, do the same thing. And this, this is me. Now imagine if the one who told you this was Allah (SWT). The Lord of the world. And it's not times 1,000, it's times 83 years of reward. That's what you're getting. Don't be stingy.
Imagine if somebody gave a dollar every single day for 365 days a year for 83 years.
Use another example. Imagine if you fed someone once a day for 83 years.
Allahu Akbar.
That's amazing. Imagine if you fed 10 people a day for 83 years. It's very difficult for someone to do this, not only physically managing it, etc., but imagine you fed 10 people a night for the last 10 days of Ramadan. Subhanallah, you are guaranteed that reward, 83 years.
Imagine those who read the Quran on Laylatul Qadr, those that pray all night on Laylatul Qadr, those that give sadaqah to give their zakat, those that you know, go and help the needy, help a person who's struggling, those that donate towards the da'wah, those that donate Qur'an, everything of that. Imagine one night becomes as if you did that for 83 years, 3 months, 3 days, and so on. Like, that opportunity cannot be missed, you know. And I'll give you a worldly example. Unfortunately, a lot of times we don't understand something until we give a worldly example, right? A lot of people talk about Bitcoin. I remember when Bitcoin was at $500, and I remember I had somebody come up to me.
How much is that now?
I think it's at $70,000 or something like that. It was over, it was like $120,000, but then it came back down and so on. You know, these things go up and down. $500, they came up to you and say, you know, you should buy this. And I thought, man, this is some weird shabuhat thing, forget it. Then when it hit $100K I myself, and I'm being honest, like, I don't fake, you know. I was like, man, I should have bought it. I mean, at $100K, if I had bought, you know, a few thousand, it would have been a crazy amount, you know. But the reality is it dipped back down, you know, and it's just worldly, right? Even if I made a million dollars, so what? Like I said, it wouldn't go in the qabar, right? But a lot of people, they feel like this, oh, I should have bought when this dropped. I should have done this.
We call it FOMO. It's fear of missing out and regret when you missed on something. You're like, ah, should I buy Bitcoin before? I'm gonna miss now. Should I buy now? Should I buy in? That's a big feeling people have. You should have— if you know this, you should have FOMO for Laylatul Qadr.
Exactly.
Because if you miss that, number one, you're not guaranteed the next opportunity, and the reward you're getting this time is a guaranteed upside They'll never go back down. Bida Allahu ta'ala, if Allah (SWT) grants you the reward, it's done.
See, Bitcoin, tomorrow the government could crack down on and say, you know what, this was made by Epstein, we're shutting it down.
Elon Musk could put a tweet out and it would just tank.
It'll tank. But the rewards from Allah is always safe. Allah fulfills His promises. Subhanahu wa ta'ala. Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala, I mean, not just in dunya because You will benefit in dunya when you do good. As your amal go up, the orders from Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala come down in accordance to your actions from the samaa. So it'll benefit you in dunya when you're doing the halal, when you have barakah, it will benefit you. One, some of the salafi used to say that if my horse or donkey or camel doesn't listen to my obey, my commands, I can tell it's from my sins.
SubhanAllah, interesting.
He said, how my wife, my children listen or don't listen is because of my sins. I know that the more I obey Allah, Allah makes them obey me. And the more I disobey Allah, I see disobedience from them from me. So that means in dunya it will benefit you. When you go into the qabar, in that grave, now imagine Abu Lahya, if I was to put you in a closet right here and close it, and it's pitch black and it's tight. You can feel all the walls. After a few hours, you would start screaming. Yeah. Imagine a day and a whole night in there by yourself, nobody listening to you, no food, no water, no internet, no Wi-Fi, no games, no cell phone, no TV, no laptop. After a month, 2 months, 3 months, you would lose your mind.
Yeah, be going crazy.
Go crazy. Imagine the people that died in the time of Isa ibn Maryam, more than 2,000 years. People that died in the time of Musa (AS), Ibrahim (AS), maybe 10, 20, 30,000, who knows. People that died in the time of Lut (AS), people that died in the time of Idris (AS), Nuh (AS), people that died in the time of Adam (AS), thousands upon thousands who Allah knows best how many years in the Ka'bah. Just that by itself, what's your 70, 80 years of life? So imagine if you get those amal on the Laylatul Qadr and in Ramadan and throughout your year, You go in that Ka'bah and the Ka'bah becomes open. For the believer, the time in the Ka'bah is like between two salawats, that fast. 10, 20, 30,000, like that. But for the disbeliever, for the fasiq, for the fajir, for the sinful, the Ka'bah closes in. And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam in the hadith, he interlocked his fingers. Imagine that for me. Like, that's enough for me to be like, that's it, man.
Yeah, that's scary.
I can't mess with haram. I can't take that being locked. I'm, you know, claustrophobic, whatever you want to call it. I'm not with it. So, you know, as we used to say back in the days, if you can't do the time, don't do the crime, right? If you can't do the time, don't do the crime, right? So if you can't do the sin You can't do the time in the Kaaba. You can't do the time in Jahannam. You can't handle that fire. Don't do the sin. So that by itself. Now imagine the Day of Judgment after that. You're raised naked. Can you imagine being naked? Like if we were just sitting here naked, how awkward would that be? Like none of us would— Aisha (ra), she had so much haya when the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said you will be raised on the Day of Judgment naked, uncircumcised. A new body because your body would have deteriorated. Like today we understand this with cloning and all that, right? Sahaba didn't know that technology, but they believed in it because the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said it. Aisha (رديانه), she told the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), 'Won't people look at each other like the Ayah?' Now imagine, Rasoolullah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) told her that on that day, from the stress of that day, nobody will even notice.
SubhanAllah.
Can you imagine you're walking around, a woman is fully naked in front of you, you won't even notice that she's naked because of how stressed you are? Yeah, that day is what you should think about when you think about sinning, when you think about missing such opportunities.
And that's the day where you'll be desperate for rewards.
50,000 years, just one segment of the Day of Judgment. What's 70 years? What's 80 years? What's a 100-year life compared to that? Then there is Jannah, there is a naar, khalideena fiha abada, those that will enter will be forever in it. Wallahi, this is not something to play with. This is something very serious. This is something that has ramifications we cannot imagine, and we all need to turn back to Allah (SWT) this Ramadan. In these last 10 nights, we need to make tawbah from any sins that we've been doing. We need to start doing what we've been lacking on, we've been slacking on, that we've been slipping on. We need to take these opportunities because what's at stake is eternal life.
Yes, SubhanAllah. And if you make tawbah during the last 10 nights and you catch Laylatul Qadr, That's as if you made tawbah for 83 years. Subhanallah, that's a whole lifespan.
It is.
People sometimes die and don't make tawbah.
The vast majority of people will not live to see 83 years. Yeah, one night.
And let's say you live to 83 years, you probably spent 10, 12, 15 years of your life being a kid, not even worshiping Allah. So that's it. You don't have to live— let's say you start practicing at 10 years old. You'd have to live to 93 years old. Yeah. And practicing from 10 to 93 to get the reward as if you prayed just during Laylatul Qadr.
That's it. Nobody miss it.
We can end on this, Eyoub (Abu Lahya). That's an amazing reminder. The last 10 nights just started. Share this video with your brothers and sisters to make sure they don't miss out on the benefit of Laylatul Qadr. Make tawbah, do good deeds. Everything is on bonus right now. Like literally, whatever actions you do are multiplied. We don't know where it is. Don't miss out. Don't be lazy. Make sure you stay up all the last 10 nights, inshallah. Whatever you can do, do even more than that. You will never regret. And there's plenty of time to rest after Ramadan, inshallah. Don't miss out on the last 10 nights. Don't miss out on Laylatul Qadr. Sheikh, barakallahou fik.
