Ming at Agents of Speech tells parents of autistic or language-delayed children to focus on empathy in therapy, not performance. Kids sense when you're trying to extract language for your own goals and will resist. Give them play and natural interaction instead of pressure.

First thing you need to understand the logic behind therapy. The logic behind therapy is that your child didn't choose to become autistic or a language delay. They didn't ask for it. A lot of parents say I want my child to do this and that. That's coming from a place of selfishness. If you don't get the mindset correct, whatever you do, the kids can feel it. They know what you're trying to do is to push them to talk or to fulfill a task, or that you're teaching them something and they'll run away. If you don't understand this, the chances of you winning very slim. Your child didn't ask to be delayed and you ask for them to speak and talk, doing the thing that is super difficult for the child, then is it fair or not? Obviously it's not. You can do a lot of things with your child. Teach them with flashcards, teach them with play, talk to them non stop. But if they know the intent of you is not to give, but to extract language from the kid, you're going to have a really hard time.
