Short instructional segment in which Ming (Agents of Speech) advises caregivers on calming autistic children by rewarding calm behavior instead of reacting to anger. Key recommendations: praise and reward calm, prevent triggers, use controlled environments, and gradually increase demands.
Chapters
Think about how to make the child calm and pair it with good stuff. Do not reward them or give them like be very reactive to a situation whenever they become pissed off and then you go, oh, stop doing that. Like, oh, why stop it? Oh, how about I give you this and then you do it? Like that works, but it rewards them for being angry. So what should you do? Well, the thing is whenever they are calm and doing something nicely, you should be already rewarding them. And that's something that it's an oversight to all of us. So what you do is you, you should praise and reward whenever they're calm and they're listening and they're compliant. Right? That's number one. Preventing is number one. So other than preventing, what you can do is to do it in a controlled environment and then slowly increase the demand you give the kid.
