Speech-delayed kids often withdraw from preschool because they haven't built the social skills that start at home. Without language, group activities feel stressful and confusing. Structured activities like songs work better than open group tasks.

Why children are not interested during kindergarten or preschool. And this applies to speech delayed children on the spectrum and so on. So usually you get a call from the school and they're like, your child isn't performing at school. He's in his own world, he's doing his own thing, and they're concerned. So I want to tell you first is that the work starts at home in terms of play. They start playing with parents and adults first, and a lot of times there's a lot of solo play. And then as they develop, they become better at cooperative play with adults, and then they start learning well with peers. So the reason behind why a child is doing that is because they don't think that's fun to mingle with other children, and that is stressful. And a group setting, especially a child who's already language delayed will feel that they're incapable of following. So you see, sometimes when there's a lot of songs and dancing, the child will follow on, but when it's a group activity, they will run off because it's outside of the comprehension.
