Are you working in a toxic environment?

Alex identifies five signs of a toxic workplace: constant trash-talk among staff, values that don't match actions, leaders who don't practice what they preach, unrealistic expectations, and frequent lawsuits from departing employees. She offers a free webinar March 19 at 11 AM EST with tools to improve your situation.

Have you been seeing a lot of stuff in the news and other places about toxic work environments? I know I have, and it's not a fun place to be. So I wanted to share with you today 5 different cues that tell you that you're working in a toxic environment. So I'm Alex, your certified high performance and mindset coach. And like I said, today I really want to talk to you about what are 5 ways that you can identify, um, whether or not you're in a toxic workplace. So the first thing is people trash talking each other. If you're not in an environment where people are being supportive, where they're demeaning the people that they work with, or they're trash talking about their manager, or their manager worse yet is trash talking them, then you know you're definitely in a toxic environment. And the sad thing is that if you hear people talk about other people, then likely they're talking about you as well, which is never a fun place to be. It's not a, you know, it's not a conversation that you really want to, want to engage in. So, you know, pay attention to what people are saying around you and just understand whether or not there, there's trash talk going on. And I'm not talking about playful banter and things like that, because that happens within the corporate environment. I'm really I'm talking more about, um, demeaning or negative talk or, um, anything that doesn't build people up within the organization. So that's the first one. The second one is when you realize that your values are no longer aligned with the company values, that could create a toxic environment specifically for you. Excuse me. It doesn't mean that the company itself, the company's environment itself, is toxic, but it may become more and more difficult for you to work in a place that is no longer aligned with your values. Or the company, for example, tells you, um, you know, our people are our biggest asset, but then their action doesn't follow, and the amount of work that they give their people is just not sustainable. For me personally, that's— I would consider that a toxic, a toxic environment. Um, the third way that you can tell whether or not a company culture is toxic is by what the leadership does. Does your leadership preach or practice what they preach? Is it a situation of do as I say, don't do as I do? Or is it— are they, you know, leading by example? And leading by example is the surest way that you can see that you know, people, the leadership and the people are aligned with the company values and the company culture. But if they're not walking the talk, then you know that there's an issue right there. Number fourth is— number four or fourth is that the expectations that people have don't really match the reality. Um, that can create a toxic environment because if the expectation is that you are going to deliver this but you have resources to deliver this, how do you bridge that gap when these expectations don't move no matter how much you talk about how this is what you can deliver with the resources that you have? That's just not going to happen, and that can create a lot of friction, that can create a lot of disappointments, and that can make you just overall feel like, you know, kind of like a square peg in a round hole kind of thing. So making sure that the expectations— and I'm not talking about challenging, there is room for challenge, there's always room for challenge— I'm talking really more about stretching beyond anything that is anything remotely realistic. So that's a bit of the difference, then, the distinction that I'd like to make there. And the fifth one is, um, are lawsuits being filed when people leave, right? That for me is a clear sign that there is something not quite right, um, and how those things are being handled, um, says a lot about, you know, the company culture and whether or not you're sitting in a toxic environment. So if you happen to be in a company where there is that type of environment, I would encourage you to think about, um, what else could you be doing? What else should you be doing? Do you have a passion that you have set aside that maybe it's time to dust off the shelf and start chasing again. Maybe you feel stuck in that environment and you don't quite know where to go and how to move forward. I'd like to help you with that. I'm having a— I'm hosting a webinar this Saturday, March 19th, at 11 AM Eastern Standard Time, and I'd invite you to come join us and to have a listen and maybe start exploring different possibilities for yourself.
