Hey, beautiful souls. Welcome back to Reclaim Your Inner Rockstar. Today's episode is such a special one because I'm joined with the incredible Luz Sierra, a National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach and founder of Lighten Up Wellness. Luz knows firsthand what it's like to be successful on the outside, but completely running on empty inside. Her story of stepping out of burnout and into joy is powerful. And I know so many of you are gonna see yourself in her journey. In our conversation, we're talking about how to recognize the early signs of burnout, the small but meaningful shifts that can reset your energy and how transition seasons, even the hard ones, can actually be an invitation into joy and purpose. So if you've been feeling stretched or like you're giving everything to everyone else but leaving yourself behind, this episode is for you. Let's dive in. I am so excited to have you here. You've been through such a powerful transformation in your life, and I want you to share this story with others because I know your story is going to resonate with so many who are listening in the audience. Let's start from the beginning. You shared a moment over coffee when you realized that you could not keep pouring from an empty cup. That's a powerful realization and an incredibly powerful image that we can relate to. Can you tell us about that moment? What shifted for you that sparked that path you're on now?
That moment over coffee was a wake-up call. I realized I was just going through the motions. When COVID hit and everything shut down, especially the events industry, which I had been in for so long, everything I knew shifted. We were working with a skeleton crew. The company restructured. My role changed. And honestly, I changed too. The joy and passion I once had for that career were gone. I sat there and I remember thinking, this is not it for me anymore. I remember feeling drained and realizing I was running on empty, just pushing through each day to show up with a smile on my face, which is my trademark. And it hit me here. I was getting older. The world was changing. When I realized something had to shift. That was the moment I decided I didn't want to keep surviving. I wanted to feel alive again. I wanted to get healthy, to reconnect with myself, and to reimagine what life could look like if I put my energy into what mattered most to me. For me, that meant health, wellness, and choosing to live vibrant and energized and fully alive.
Mm. That is such a powerful awareness. And this type of awareness that you speak of is something that many of us really miss out until it's almost too late for us in our life. And yet you were able to catch that and you were able to say, you know what, I'm going to shift my life. That takes a lot of courage. So it sounds like you lived a little bit more in faith at this point than fear. Fear of staying the same is what motivated you to keep moving into faith, right? So for the women who are listening, who might think that they're running on fumes, so many of us feel that way, but we haven't been able to label that as burnout yet, right? I was listening to a, a podcast recently on neuroscience and the brain on burnout. Did you know that burnout has its own medical code? In conventional medicine, burnout is classified by its own medical code. So this is something that is really very much an epidemic that is happening to women, especially at our age. So, you know, you think about that, that burnout is real. You were feeling that burnout. What are some of those early signs that, you know, that my listener can watch out for, and how can she really begin gently shifting that energy back? Before she hits that breaking point?
Burnout has almost become cultural, like it's expected to run on empty and you just keep pushing. But the truth is burnout often creeps in quietly and many women don't recognize it until it's already taken a toll. Some of the early signs that I see are things like low energy, no matter how much sleep you get, you're struggling to focus or constantly overthinking, feeling anxious or disconnected from your emotions, or even coping by overeating or numbing coming out. Sometimes it's more subtle, like constantly saying yes, but quietly resenting it, right? Or realizing you haven't taken a deep breath in days. Those are signals from your body and spirit saying something needs to shift. Burnout doesn't just steal your energy, it steals your joy. The good news is you don't have to wait for a breaking point to turn things around. The first step isn't a big overhaul, it's just Pausing and noticing. Ask yourself, what's one small thing that I can let go of today? Or what's one small way I can refill my cup? Those micro shifts add up and over time help you restore your energy and reconnect with yourself before burnout takes over.
Such beautiful points and really doable points. What I'm hearing is slow it down. And get back to basics and really get in touch with what intuitively can support our grounding state. I love that you say to focus on those small doable things. With the clients I work with who are carrying very heavy trauma, like trauma memories and flashbacks, that is incredibly challenging for our central nervous system to do is to slow it down and break it up into those small little things because those are the things that actually stick. Can you tell us a little bit about that, how those small doable steps, those micro steps have been able to help you?
For me, those little micro steps, sometimes people think that you have to overhaul your entire life, but those little shifts that you can actually sustain and use them as anchors, they things that you can return to every day to reset your energy and live with more intention. I think the biggest things for me that have worked in my life is really breathing, right? Focus on the breath. Pause for even 60 seconds and take 3 slow, intentional breaths. It sounds basic, but it's a reset button for your nervous system. The moment you intentionally, consciously step into that. Nature is the other thing. Step outside, even if it's just on the porch or under a tree. Being in nature recalibrates your energy in ways we often underestimate. So it's nice to just get out there, whether it's humid and hot, it doesn't even matter. Just a moment out there in nature. The other thing that is very important in my life is connection. I come from a big family. So it's reaching out to someone you love. I have family, I have friends. Send a text, share a laugh, or just let them know you're thinking of them. Connection restores joy. My top keys for living intentionally are start your day with presence, not the phone. I used to pick up this thing early in the morning and scroll late at night, right before I went to bed. No, start the day with presence. Move your body. Even a short walk counts. To me, movement is medicine. It doesn't even matter what you're doing. Just take a breath and move that body. Nourish yourself with food that fuels, not drains. Whole foods, plant-based. Start cooking, which I started. I'm not a great cook, but this whole food, getting out of that ultra processed foods. Quick because you're always— I was always on the run. Whatever was quick, whatever was easy. Food is medicine too. What we put in our bodies. I'm going to go down the list with different things that are important to me. Living intentionally. Protecting your energy by saying no when needed. That was something that I learned and I'm still learning. I'm a people pleaser and many of us are. You realize you're overbooked, double booked, triple booked, and then the stress comes in. Protect that energy. Create small rituals, cup of tea, a stretch, gratitude before bed, or just gratitude. It's so important. Celebrate progress, not perfection. That's me. All my life, if it wasn't perfect, I didn't want to face the world. I couldn't do this perfectly, which amounted to so much stress. It's progress. Keep moving forward. Keep that needle moving. Practice gratitude. That attitude of gratitude, focus on all the blessings you have in your life, it augments blessings and gives you that joy. Keep coming back to that joy. That joy is individual. What brings me joy may be different from what brings you joy. For me, the simple things in life bring me lots of joy. If it's hugging a baby, being outside and seeing a butterfly, seeing a person smile, just connecting and understanding people. So coming back to joy is to me so important. The beauty is you don't need to do all these at once. Pick one or two that feel doable today. And over time, these little micro shifts create a whole new rhythm, one that's grounded, energized, and aligned with who you really are, because it just starts— everything starts resetting.
It's so beautiful. So many good points there. So many good points. And it's so intuitive. It's something that we have to retrain our intuition to really make more space for. And from one spiritually intuitive woman to another, I know you know what I mean when you say it's like, get back to that, what's really important. It's how we were created. It's who we are. It's within us to be that. When you said nature, of course, that makes so much sense because there are energetics in nature and energetics, natural antidepressants in nature, natural antioxidants in nature. When you think about sitting on the beach and just taking in the energy there, the negative ions that come from it. We are wonderfully made. Knowing you on a personal level, I know that you live this life and you say what you mean and you mean what you say because that's the life you've chosen for yourself. Thank you for clearing up those points for us, because I think the women that are listening, my beautiful audience, can really just walk away with one or two things that they can apply and it can help them to really be able to stay grounded. And that's really where it's at. The importance of being able to say, hey, you know what? I can't do it all, but I can do this one thing today that will help stabilize me so that even when things are challenging and times and seasons are uncertain, we're not stuck. We can flow. I think of water that flows. Everything has a rhythm. And so what I'm hearing from your day-to-day micro movements, and myself too, because I implement all those things you said, I also implement those things in my life. And I have noticed that flow is where it's at. Try to be like water. Learn how to surf, baby. Learn how to surf the wave. And that will help ground us. I love that. When you filled out the guest submission, you talked about reimagining what life would be like after COVID, because this all happened during COVID and it took the world by shock, literal shock. It made us think, how are we going to transition these seasons? You mentioned reimagining life after COVID and how that transitioning of seasons can be a doorway into joy and purpose. How can someone begin to see change not as something to fear,, but as an invitation of possibility. Tell us your perspective.
I understand fear a lot. For me, fear often comes from a lack of faith. That quiet voice telling us we're not ready, not good enough, we're not worthy of what's next. That whole sense of worth. And transition seasons naturally stir that up because they push us into the unknown. Living in the unknown can be pretty scary sometimes. But what I've learned is that those seasons, they're also powerful invitations. They invite us to ask, what do I want to carry forward? And just as importantly, what can I lovingly leave behind? After COVID shifted everything, I realized I couldn't go back to who I was before. My role had changed. My team was gone. I had changed too. That could have been terrifying. And quite frankly, it was at times. But once I stopped resisting change, it became freeing. It gave me permission to reimagine what I wanted my future we want her to look like and to align with joy and purpose in a deeper way. Change is good for the soul. And while fear may always be there, the flip side of fear is excitement. Every new chapter brings new hope, new challenges, and growth. It's in those moments when life pushes us out of the box that we've been living in that we discover how much bigger and more joyful our lives can really be.
That is so beautiful. I love that. Moving forward into the possibilities. Fear is often a lack of faith. How true that is. There's a principle that fear paralyzes us and that there's no fear in love. So we have to make choices based on, are we gonna live in fear? Are we gonna live in faith? It's choice. Really is a choice. And I love that you chose to live in faith in that moment. Look what's come to you since, like so many new things you have become this very different being. You have made lemonade out of lemons, Meyer lemons at that. You've really created this beautiful new transitional life for yourself and being able to step into a whole new Luz and shine that light because Luz, light, it's a beautiful thing. You have built something so beautiful out of this. Idea of resetting, and I love that so much. Luz, you are a National Board Certified Wellness Coach. You have this beautiful business, Lighten Up Wellness. You have so many opportunities that have come your way. You have created this reset program. Tell us about your Wellness Reset Program, what inspired it, how it works, and the kind of transformation that you've seen it spark in others. Who were ready to reclaim their energy and joy. Tell me a little about it.
Okay. So the Wellness Reset Program really grew out of my own journey of realizing that I couldn't keep living on empty. I wanted to create something that helps people reclaim their energy and joy without waiting for burnout to force the change. Each package is a 3-session virtual coaching series, 45 minutes each, spaced weekly or every 10 days. And the focus is always on simple, sustainable shifts that fit into our real life. So with this, um, I offer 3 paths depending on what someone needs the most. The Breathe and Begin Again is for those carrying stress or heaviness who just need to ground and breathe again. Move into Joy helps people reconnect with their body and creativity and when they felt like flat or disconnected and The other one is Your Daily Wellness Reset is for those who want to create a rhythm and routine that supports their energy, clarity, and focus. In all of them, I use a coaching approach that's empathetic and client-centered, helping each person clarify what matters most to them, explore what's getting in the way, and design rituals or practices that actually stick. As a coach, I see myself as a guide, a partner, a collaborator walking alongside you. It's client-centered. It's Focusing on what's important to that person and evoking that, being there in that moment to spark the transformation I hope to spark is simple, but powerful. I want people to walk away feeling lighter, more connected to themselves, and confident that they have tools that they can use every day. Because when you feel good in your own body and mind, you show up differently. For yourself, your work, your relationships. And that ripple effect is where the real magic happens.
That sounds amazing and doable. Just like you were talking earlier about your doable steps, it doesn't seem overwhelming to somebody looking for a reset. And resets can be a lot more simpler than we give— we, in our mind, we make things so much bigger, but a reset can be a small shift. And it's nice that you have created a program like this that can help somebody who's in burnout and transitioning of life. Now, I didn't ask this earlier, but you mentioned women who transition in life. Like, what would you say would be like your— the average age of the person that you work with, the woman that steps into your space? What would be her avatar, so to speak?
That has changed and evolved over time. When I initially started, I was working with women in their 50s and older, but then as I grew and got to talk to more people, it's women in their 40s, some going still to nursing school, some in their professions, some retiring. So it's different stages. We all as women go through different stages. My focus was on older women because I resonated with that. But the truth of the matter is it doesn't even matter. Like it just, as women, we go The different stages of our lives, motherhood, professionalism, retirement. You want to, or even before that, you want to, you know, get up that corporate ladder and you're working, working, working. And then you're getting like, okay, I want to slow down, but what does that look like? Right? So women, wherever you are, we're all dealing with constant changes and being pulled in many directions on a day-to-day level. It's important to reconnect at whatever stage you're in. Let's take a look at where I've been and now let's take a look at where I wanna be. Then let's see what's in the middle. That's where I come in. I, as a coach, will hold your hand, will guide, will collaborate, will partner to clarify what's important to you. To say, okay, we're working through this together for you to be able to get to that destination that you envision for yourself in your life. We are not stuck at whatever point in time. We can pause, we can breathe, we can reset, we can regroup, we can reimagine. And that's to me what's so important. I'm so grateful that I did that for myself at this stage in my life. And, you know, I just want to be able to shine a light for other people because you have to do the work. It's so gratifying. It's small steps. You have to change everything. Let's take these little small steps. And before you know it, you're going to wake up and you're going to be like, oh, life is good.
