Why I Stopped Taking Clients for 9 Months: Boundaries, Leadership, and Emotional Capacity!
31 Mar 2026 · 20 min
Amy Robinson, an aromapsychologist and cognitive coach, stopped taking new clients for nine months because her coaching container had become a crutch instead of a platform for self-leadership. The pause let her energy steady and her remaining clients become more self-reliant. She's now reopening with three pathways: a self-led collective, private coaching, and a 5-Minute Reset Guide.

But first, I want to start with an illustration. Have you ever seen an eagle flying in the sky? Here where I live near the beach, we see eagles everywhere. In the morning when I step outside with my cup of coffee and I look at the skyline and I think, "Oh my goodness, what an incredible day!" As I'm looking up, I can see 2 or 3 or even 4 eagles flying by. They are magnificent. They stop you in your tracks. They literally can take your breath away. One eagle Their wingspan can open up to at least 6 feet, if not more. Eagles are not to be messed with. They really are the king of the skies, aren't they? And yet eagles have pests, predators that try to attack them. They say the eagle is a predator to none, but some will try. A crow is one of the only birds bold enough to peck at an eagle in flight. Sometimes it will even land on an eagle's back and start attacking it. Here's what's interesting about this. The eagle does not fight the crow. It doesn't twist around trying to throw it off. It doesn't waste energy arguing with it in the air. The ego does something far more intelligent. It simply flies higher, higher and higher into the sky. And as the altitude increases, something happens that the crow cannot tolerate. The air gets thinner. The oxygen drops. The environment becomes impossible for the crow to survive. Eventually, the crow has no choice but to fall away. Not because the eagle defeated it in battle, but because the eagle rose to the level the crow could not operate in. Why is this so important? Our instinct is to engage with energies that are sucking our emotional state. We try to explain ourselves, we try to correct it, we try to fight it, we defend our decisions. And I found myself doing that to a small degree. But then that keeps you flying at the crow's level. The eagle strategy is very different. It simply changes altitude. When we're rising, there's always going to be something or someone pecking at us, whether it's gossip, whether it's negative talk, whether it's wanting to be like us. And copying us, and that can take our energy. But the goal is to elevate to the point where you live in a space where your pests can't bother you anymore because they cannot breathe in the atmosphere that you're in. 9 months ago, I made a decision that looked very quiet on the outside, but internally it was an incredibly big moment. I stopped taking on new clients. I followed through on my end of my contracts, and once they were done, I chose not to ask them to renew. Not because they were bad women, not because the work wasn't meaningful, but because something inside me had shifted. I started recognizing that I was elevating, and the level of coaching that I was putting out was disrupting my clientele. They weren't doing the work. They started to turn on me, and so I continued to rise. I honored them, but I chose not to allow them in my space anymore. In my membership, I had a thriving membership. I released almost 10 members who were pecking, figuratively pecking, at the work that I do, at the level of leadership that I promoted and put out, and at the business integrity that I upheld. You see, if you're a high-functioning woman who's listening to this, you know exactly what I'm talking about. There comes a point in your life where you realize the container that you've built for your life no longer fits the woman who you have become. And instead of adjusting just a little, you have to change it completely. This is where I found myself. For years, I had built a coaching space that helped women regulate emotionally. To think clearly and to move through trauma patterns and strength. But what happens— trauma is tricky, and trauma can leave their victim with an insatiable need to bring others to their level. The work that I did was powerful. But over time, something subtle began happening. Some of the women were not using the container to rise. They were using that container to lean. And there is a difference between the two. Leaning on leadership occasionally, that's healthy. But leaning on leadership instead of developing your own strength quietly erodes the container in which you're in. And I started noticing something else too. Boundaries that were once respected were slowly being stretched. Not maliciously, not even consciously. My heart went out to these women who did this. But they were being stretched. And this is something I want to talk about honestly because women don't talk about this enough. Sometimes people take advantage of the boundaries without realizing that they're doing it, and some even do realize they're doing it. When someone is strong, calm, and capable, people will naturally begin leaning more heavily on them. And if the leader doesn't adjust the structure, eventually the leader becomes the emotional regulator for everyone. And I started noticing that happening, and that is not the role that I'm here to play. My role is to teach women how to regulate themselves, not hold their nervous systems for them indefinitely. So 9 months ago, I made this decision. Some of my clients were in shock over it because they wanted to continue to work with me, and I said no. They wanted to continue to be in my membership, and I said no. So I released them. I stepped away from the constant intake of clients so that I can re-regulate and rise to where I am today. I began clearing my community. Some women were okay with it, others not so much. Some relationships simply completed their season, and I gave myself something many women are terrified to give themselves. I gave myself space. I stepped back. See, I had created a business, the structure of my business, so that I had a free flow of of income always. And I did. Even throughout my 9 months, I had a free flow of finances. I did not need any more because for me, the integrity of being authentic and holding ground energetically is more important than money being taken from a client that is misaligned. I reduced the income stream that had been consistent, and I watched what happened. And this is where it gets really, really good, because I realized the world didn't collapse. I actually, in myself, found higher ground. The sky didn't fall from under me. I still received what I needed. That experience revealed something incredibly profound in me, women. Many women want the life they imagine for themselves, but they're way too afraid to trust their own self-leadership enough to step into it. They keep themselves in containers in their life, in their work, in their relationships that exhaust them. They keep relationships that drain them. They keep the pace that keeps them constantly activated because they're afraid of what will happen if they stop. But sometimes the most powerful leadership move you can make is this: you pause, you recalibrate, you remove what no longer belongs, and you trust that the next structure of your life will meet you there. Over these past 9 months, I have watched something fascinating happen internally within myself. The woman I was stretching to become has quietly arrived, and I don't say that from ego. I say it from a calm recognition. I see it in the way my energy is received. I see it in the way I expend my own energy. 9 months ago, I wanted a life where I had more spaciousness, more intentional leadership, more discernment about who entered my container, more emotional responsibility from women around me. And now I look around, and that's exactly exactly where I am. Each woman that chooses to step into my collective is self-led. She's responsible. She takes ownership for herself and for her growth and for her time and her efforts. She also takes the time for herself to invest in that energetic grounding, and peace that she desperately looks for. There's no more gossip. There's no more drama. There's no more leaning on the coach for every single detail because these women have learned to tap into themselves already, and they ask for my support to help themselves, tap into themselves even more deeply. Clear leadership is one of the most feminine forms of power there is. It doesn't yell. It does not defend itself endlessly. It simply adjusts the structure. And over the last 9 months, that's exactly what I did. And now, as I begin opening my work again in new ways, the container feels different. It feels steadier. It feels more aligned with the kind of women I actually want to work with. The woman who takes responsibility for her growth. The woman who uses leadership —as a mirror rather than a crutch. The woman who wants to regulate her life, not outsource that regulation to someone else. And if that woman is you, then this next season of my work is going to make a lot of sense to you.
