You’re Not Stuck, You’re Patterned: Neuroplasticity, Energetics, and the High-Functioning Woman’s Reset
14 Apr 2026 · 14 min
Amy Robinson explains why high-functioning women stay stuck in overstimulation even when successful: their brains are wired for pressure through neuroplasticity, and changing thoughts alone won't work. She teaches breath work paired with scent to rewire your nervous system into actual steadiness, not just the idea of it.

Hey, beautiful souls. Welcome to Reclaim Your Inner Rockstar, the space for high-capacity leaders who lead boldly yet often feel overstimulated beneath the surface. I'm Amy Robinson, aromapsychologist and cognitive coach with more than 25 years of helping others find emotional clarity through scent and science. My work began when I realized scent could instantly shift my thoughts and regulate my entire inner world. And I knew women like me needed access to that same power. Each week you will receive grounded tools and conversations that help you steady your nervous system and think more clearly. Are you ready to feel like yourself again? Then you're in the right place.
Welcome back to Reclaim Your Inner Rockstar. Before we begin, I want to speak to 3 types of women who are listening right now. The first is a woman who wants structure, consistency, and a space that keeps you grounded. That's exactly what I've built inside the Collective. It's organized, intentional, and designed for women who want to live in emotional steadiness. The second type of woman, you're ready for proximity. You don't want to figure this out alone anymore. In that case, private coaching is where we refine that work at a high level. And the third type of women is someone who wants something simple to start and works quickly. In this case, my Digital Reset Guide gives you a direct way to shift your state in minutes. All of these are available to you in the show notes. You just need to choose how you want to be supported. Now, this episode is an update to a former episode that I had on changing our brain through neuroplasticity. I want to start this episode by really emphasizing there is nothing wrong with you, beautiful. Your brain just got really good at surviving in life, and now that's all that comes up for you. It's running patterns that no longer match, and it drives you crazy sometimes, doesn't it? Because it doesn't match the woman who you've become. High-functioning women don't struggle because they're weak. They struggle because their nervous system is still wired for pressure, performance, and anticipation, even when their life no longer requires it. Is that you, beautiful? I'm also of that type of woman. So we're gonna go deeper on this because it's important to understand that this is much deeper than even just a mindset. Our brain is wired beautifully, but what's important to understand is that we can rewire our brain. And when it rewires itself, and then we focus on the energetics behind it, it can either reinforce our past or it can support the woman that you're becoming. So let's have a conversation around that neuroplasticity. I'm sure you've heard what this is. If you're here, You're not new to this. This is something that you delve into. You've probably heard other podcasts having this conversation on neuroplasticity. But just to keep it simple, let's go ahead and give you an explanation for those of you who may have not caught that trend. Neuroplasticity is your brain's ability to change, to adapt, and to rewire itself based on what you repeatedly think, feel and do. Every thought you think, every emotional reaction that you repeat, every way you respond under pressure, that is paving the way to strengthen the neural pathway. Think of it like this: you have carpet in your home, and you will notice in the areas that you walk through over and over again. Maybe it's going into your bedroom, or maybe it's in your hallway, you're gonna see that area of the carpet worn down even more. Because you repeatedly go back and forth, that is a very high traffic area. It's very similar with neural pathways. We pave the way for a certain type of thinking. You didn't consciously choose most of your patterns. You practiced them. So over and over, under stress, while trying to be that strong one, the composed one, the reliable one, your brain has adapted to that version of you. Not the woman who you're becoming now, but the one who had to hold everything together. But here's your edge. This is where energetics can really come in. Your brain doesn't just respond to thoughts, it responds to state. So energetics here is a state your body and nervous system are operating from. So if your baseline is subtle tension or anticipation, it's like a quiet readiness for something to go wrong. Have you sensed that? Has something good happened in your life and automatically you think, "When is the other shoe going to drop?" Or, "This can't last forever." That is your brain and your energetics reminding you that something bad could happen, but that's learned behavior. So then even when you think a better thought, your body doesn't agree with it. It pulls you back into what's familiar. This is why so many high-functioning women say, "I know better, but I still feel the same," because we're trying to change cognitively without shifting energetically. So let's name it clearly. You built your success inside patterns like over-responsibility, emotional control, self-monitoring, performance-based worth. And let me be clear here, I'm not talking just business success. I'm also talking life success, every aspect of your life. If you feel it's successful, these patterns could have been what created it. These patterns made you effective, but they also trained your brain to associate pressure as safety, control as stability, overthinking as preparedness, So when life gets quiet, when things are actually okay, your brain doesn't settle. It scans, it searches, it tightens. Not because something is wrong, but because calm feels so unfamiliar. It's conditioning. This is why rewiring our brain is so helpful. Rewiring our brain isn't about forcing new thoughts. You ever hear that? Just build an affirmation and you'll be good. There's so much more to that. I coach my clients in creating affirmations that are tailored specifically to them and in a way that they can believe. Believe. And it isn't about absolutes. For example, if you feel like a loser and say to yourself, I'm a bit of a loser, but then your affirmation is, I am the greatest, your body does not believe that, which means your brain won't believe that, which means the challenge will be in ever getting to that state. So instead of saying something like I am the greatest. You can say, I'm learning to view myself differently. You can repeat affirmations all day long, but if your body is still bracing, nothing sticks. This is why I do the work the way I do. I'm very intentional in how I coach women, whether in the collective and in private coaching on how to move forward in a way that their nervous system will not be so activated constantly. Because we don't start with forcing the mind, we start with shifting the state. Breath slows the system. Scent anchors a new emotional experience. The body softens. Then the thought becomes believable. So now your brain has evidence. Now it says, "Oh, we can live here." That's neuroplasticity in action. Take a moment with me. Let's see if we can embody this experience. Notice your body right now. Is there tension you weren't even aware of? Maybe your shoulders, your jaw, your chest. Let them soften. Just slightly. Take a slower breath. And imagine pairing this moment with a scent you return to daily, consistently. Over time, your brain begins to associate this scent with safety, this breath with calm, this state with home. You're not forcing change, you're becoming familiar with a new way of being. Accountability is really important here because when you have an accountability partner like a transformational coach, we encourage you to keep going even when you feel you wanna stop. We add to the consistency. So at this point, this work stops being about fixing these triggers, right? About the activation, and it becomes about identity. A high-functioning woman who has rewired her brain doesn't chase calm. She doesn't perform stability. She doesn't prove her worth through how much she can hold. She is internally steady, and that takes time. Takes time to become that person. So understand that as you're going through that process, as you're becoming that woman, remind yourself it's okay to work through this process. Because from that place of internal steadiness, she's able to make decisions. Her decisions change, her relationships change, her standards change. She no longer lives in reaction. She lives in a space where she can lead herself and be such a beautiful, calm, and steady example for others. And that's really where the power is. That's why it's so important. That's why energetics is such a beautiful way to be. If you're listening to this and realizing you don't need more information, you need a different internal experience, there are a few ways to step into this work with me. If you want structure, consistency, and a space that keeps you anchored, The Collective is where you begin. It's designed to support you daily in a way that actually integrates. If you're ready for deeper proximity and personalized refinement, private coaching is where we do that work together at a higher level. And if you're someone who needs a quick, effective shift to start, my Digital Reset Guide will allow you to do exactly that. Everything is available to you in the show notes. The question isn't what works, it's what you're ready to step into. I'll catch you in the next episode.
