Is This Stress or Perimenopause? The Midlife Nervous System Conversation No One Is Having!
3 Mar 2026 · 13 min
Aromapsychologist Amy Robinson explains how perimenopause destabilizes the nervous system, making ordinary stress feel unbearable. Declining progesterone and fluctuating estrogen lower stress tolerance. She uses scent anchoring and breathwork to help women regulate their nervous systems and distinguish hormonal anxiety from situational stress.

There is a very specific kind of anxiety that shows up in midlife. Do you know what I'm talking about? It's not that chaotic anxiety of your 20s. It's quieter. It's sharper. You wake up at 4:17 AM. Your heart's slightly racing. Your mind is scanning. Your body is already braced. Nothing's technically wrong, but nothing feels fully steady either. And you wonder, oh my goodness, what is going on? Am I having a panic attack? Is this stress? Am I burning out? Am I dying? Or is this perimenopause? We're gonna have this conversation. Let's get honest with ourselves because sometimes it's a little bit of both. In perimenopause, progesterone begins to decline. Progesterone is calming. It supports sleep. It it buffers anxiety. When it drops, your nervous system loses one of its natural stabilizers. Estrogen fluctuates unpredictably. That affects serotonin. That affects mood. That affects emotional resilience. Layer this on top of being a high-capacity woman who's already carrying it all. You don't suddenly become incapable. You become more sensitive to that stress load. The same workload, the same responsibilities, the same leadership role. But your internal buffering system has changed. And no one told you about this. The story that we really don't talk about out loud is very personal to us. I'll give you an example. I've sat with women who have built businesses, they have raised families, they have led teams, they have got it all together. And then midlife hits. It's sudden irritability, brain fog, tears that feel disproportionate, heart palpitations, early morning dread. Can I just tell you, That early morning dread, that's the thing that gets me the most. They think, I'm losing my edge, I'm becoming fragile, what's wrong with me, am I dying? Honey, nothing is wrong with you. Your biochemistry is shifting. I can relate so deeply to this, and I've had to tell myself the very same thing. But here's the gritty part. Most high-functioning women refuse to adjust. Let me repeat that. Most high-functioning women refuse to adjust. You try to push through it like you always have been. You try to push through it like you always have, but midlife doesn't respond responds to force. It responds to calibration. So how do you know? How do you begin to differentiate? Well, stress tends to be situational. It spikes around workload, conflict, deadlines. Perimenopausal shifts feel more physiological. It's that random anxiety, That sleep disruption without clear cause, heightened sensory sensitivity, lower frustration tolerance. That person you want to slap? Yeah, that's part of the perimenopausal shift. But here's the overlap. Hormonal fluctuation lowers your stress tolerance. So things that didn't dysregulate you before now do. And that can really feel humiliating. I get it, love. I've been there. I'm going through it too. Especially when you pride yourself on steadiness, like I do. Here's the truth that I really want you to sit with for a moment. You can't regulate midlife the same way that you regulated your 30s. Your body demands more respect now. You need more sleep protection, more nervous system care, more margin and space, more intentional recovery. And this is where scent psychology can become really, really a powerful aid for you because it's not trendy, it's not fluffy, it's neurological. Why does scent psychology matter so much in our midlife? Because our olfactory system is directly connected to our limbic brain, the emotional center. That scent, it bypasses cognition. It speaks directly to the nervous system. So in midlife, when hormones are fluctuating, your emotional threshold narrows and scent becomes an anchor and a stabilizer. When used consistently, aromatic anchoring teaches the body 3 different things: the scent, the smell equals calm. This particular smell equals safety. This smell equals steadiness. It becomes a conditioned regulation response that matters when your internal chemistry is less predictable. You are creating external stability to support internal fluctuation. And honey, that is a strategy. Let me give you a story. I had a client who told me that she thought she was developing a anxiety disorder. But out of nowhere, she couldn't tolerate noise. Meetings felt overwhelming. Her heart would race with no clear reason. Medical tests came back normal. Guess what? It was perimenopause. We didn't just talk mindset. We built a routine for her life, a very specific routine that worked with her, her personality, her likes, her dislikes, all of it. Evening scent anchoring before bed, morning breathwork paired with a grounding aroma, a midday reset protocol when irritability spiked. Within weeks, her nervous system stopped feeling like an unpredictable enemy. Her words to me I feel like I'm cooperating with my body instead of fighting against it. That's the shift, love. That's the shift. So it's important to note that there's an identity crisis layer that's involved. Midlife can feel so destabilizing because your body, which you relied on, feels so different. This is not that decline. It is not the end of our world. It is refinement. It's important that you start to really pay attention to that. It's your nervous system asking for a new operating system, and that does not include more hustle, more control, or more self-criticism. What it does need is more regulation, more precision, more support. Because honey, you're not weaker. You're becoming stronger. And you are more biologically complex. And that requires smarter tools. So what do you do? Protect sleep like it's a strategy. Lower stimulation in the evening. Use scent consistently, not randomly. Lengthen your inhales when anxiety strikes. Question those catastrophic thoughts using cognitive behavioral therapy methods that I can teach you and coach you within private coaching together. And most importantly, stop shaming yourself for needing different support now. Your body is not betraying you. It's communicating. If this episode felt like someone finally named what you've been privately wondering, that's intentional. I get it. Inside my Regulation Collective, I have that entire section dedicated to hormone care, nervous system recalibration, and scent psychology specifically for midlife women like yourself. Again, it's self-led, it's high value, it's structured, it's designed for women who don't want fluff. They want clarity and tools. If you want personalized support one-on-one, then apply for private coaching. And if you need something right now, immediately at the end of this episode, start with my 5-Minute Reset Guide. And if this episode helps you regulate something inside you, Hit follow so that you don't have to search for these tools next time you need them. You're not unraveling, you are recalibrating, and there is so much power in that. I'll see you in the next episode. Bye, beautiful soul.
