The Way You Breathe, Think, and Decide Are Connected. Why Do Capable Women Spiral Under Pressure?
3 Mar 2026 · 0 min
In this episode of Reclaim Your Inner Rockstar, aromapsychologist and cognitive coach Amy Robinson addresses high‑capacity women who appear composed in public but experience internal spirals of rumination and over‑thinking after stressful interactions. She explains that breathing, nervous‑system activation, thoughts, and decisions form a single feedback loop: shallow breath tightens the body, which narrows cognition and drives fear‑based choices, leading to over‑explaining and self‑criticism. Amy argues that this is a physiological regulation issue, not a confidence deficit, and that positive thinking or affirmations alone cannot break the cycle. She introduces scent as a rapid, neurologically direct conditioning tool—pairing a chosen aroma with a regulated state (deep exhale, relaxed posture) creates a physiological memory of safety that can be triggered later. The episode provides a concrete regulation toolkit: lengthen the exhale, unclench the jaw, drop the shoulders, and use a specific aromatic cue, followed by a mental check (“Is this clarity or activation?”). Amy shares a client case illustrating how these practices transformed internal steadiness. She then promotes her self‑led membership, private coaching, and a 5‑minute Reset Your Emotional Baseline guide as structured support options, all detailed in the show notes. The episode ends with a call for listener feedback and a reminder that calm is attainable through intentional physiological regulation.

Everything I spoke about you can find in the show notes in the description. Now let's talk about why your brilliance disappears under stress. I want to tell you a story. A woman that I worked with, she was thoughtful, responsible, respected in her world, said something in a session that stopped me in my tracks. She said, See if you can relate to her. I can hold it together for everyone else. I can solve problems. I can be the steady one that people look to for support. But if someone I care about is upset with me, I tend to unravel. Not publicly, but each internally. Her chest would tighten, her breathing would get shallow, her mind would start replaying every single word that she said. It felt like rumination. You know what rumination is? That one thought that just keeps going over and over and over to the point of madness in your mind. She would ask herself, did I sound harsh? Was I too much? Should I have softened that? Are they pulling away? Outwardly calm, inwardly spiraling. She knew it was irrational. She knew she wasn't in charge. She knew She wasn't in danger. She knew the relationship wasn't ending, but her body said otherwise. Her body did not know that. This is what nobody talks about in conversations about emotional regulation for high-performing women. You can be emotionally intelligent. You feel everything in the room. You can understand attachment patterns. You have everything logically down pat in your mind. You can teach communication skills and still spiral when your nervous system is activated because the way that you breathe, think, and decide are not separate systems. They are all one loop. When your breath shortens, your body tightens. When your body tightens, your thoughts narrow. When your thoughts narrow, your decisions become fear-based. And suddenly you're drafting texts that you don't need to send. You're overexplaining, softening your tone unnecessarily, mentally editing yourself before anyone even asks you to. You call it being thoughtful, but it's actually Activation running the show. When smart women overthink under pressure, it's rarely a confidence issue. It's a nervous system issue. When your body feels unsafe, even socially unsafe, your cognition distorts. You scan for threat. You replay conversations. You assume distance. You anticipate rejection. And because you are intelligent, your brain makes the spiral sound logical. That's the trap. You don't spiral because you are weak. You spiral because your physiology is tightened. And this is where cognitive regulation actually matters. It's not positive thinking. It's not affirmations, telling yourself things that you do not believe over and over again. It's not about convincing yourself that you're fine. Regulation means that you interrupt the body first. You lengthen the exhale. You unclench your jaw. You drop your shoulders before you respond. When the body studies, the thinking widens. And then when you add scent, aroma, that is where it gets incredibly powerful. Because many women think of aromatics as a part of self-care, I look at it more as self-regulation. It's not as something that you do to relax, but you can use it as a conditioning tool because scent travels directly to the emotional center of the brain before language. So when you learn to use scent intentionally and you pair it With a regulated state, steady breathing, grounding, posture, clear decision-making, your brain begins to associate that scent with safety. And over time, that scent becomes a cue, a signal, an anchor. So all those affirmations you have going around in your head that you don't believe You don't have to do that. Instead of trying to talk yourself down, you trigger a physiological memory of steadiness. This is scent psychology used strategically. It's not just a good scent, it's neurologically attached. And this is powerful for leaders, for relational dynamics, for women who think who need to think clearly when something feels personal. Because when your nervous system is regulated, your decisions change. And I'm not talking vagus nerve, because many women out there, they talk about the vagus nerve, and I agree with that. I do somatic exercises. I understand what the vagus nerve can do and how it calms you. What What I'm talking about is something very different. Scent is immediately a trigger neurologically. So imagine that combination together, being able to have a scent as a cue and somatic exercises to calm your body down. What a powerful combination. What happens is you stop sending that extra text, you stop overexplaining, you stop collapsing internally. You respond once and you move forward. Confidence fluctuates, but regulation stabilizes. That woman I mentioned earlier, once she learned to regulate before reacting, everything shifted. She became steadier, and steadiness is power. If you're recognizing yourself in this, I'm happy for you. That's a good thing. But awareness alone won't change the pattern. Repetition will. Conditioning will. Internal Baseline work will. So here's your invitation: the next time you feel that tightening, after a conversation, pause. Lengthen your exhale. Soften your belly. Notice the narrative forming in your mind and ask yourself, "Is this clarity or is this activation?" That question alone can change everything. Here's where I invite you to do an exercise with me. I want you to take one slow breath right now. Make it longer going out than coming in. So in exhale, release as long as you can. Feel how quickly your body responds. Your system is not your enemy. It just needs better signals. If this episode felt uncomfortably accurate, that's not random. It means that you're ready for a different level of internal steadiness. You have been trying to go it alone. You might be trying to piece bits and pieces of other people's ideas and modalities together and trying to make it your own. How is that working for you? How is investing your time and your energy trying to piece things together working for you. Instead, why not invest, invest a bit of time, a bit of money, a bit of energy into getting focused support? Inside my membership, you're going to find a self-led vault of highly valuable coaching on emotional regulation, cognitive steadiness, and scent-based anchoring tools.
