Rejection Sensitivity in High-Performing Leaders: Why Success Can Still Feel Personal (and How to Regulate It)
10 Feb 2026 · 16 min
Aromapsychologist Amy Robinson explains rejection sensitivity in high-performing leaders: a learned over-activation of pattern-recognition that shows up as rumination, body tightness, and constant internal buzz. Mindset fixes alone don't work because the body reacts first. She outlines a three-step framework using nervous-system signals, cognitive reframing, and scent to teach your body safety and free energy for rest.

Just take a breath. You don't need to manage anything here. Hey, beautiful soul. Welcome back to Reclaim Your Inner Rockstar. Where we're gonna have a conversation today on a topic that is more common than we give it credit for. You may experience this every single day and don't even know it. Rejection sensitivity and the high-performing leader is something that we need to create awareness around. You see, there's a particular kind of woman that I work with. She's capable. She's emotionally intelligent. She's built something meaningful, whether it's a business, a career, a life others admire. And yet, there are moments that hit her harder than they should. A message goes unanswered. A client hesitates. A team member shifts tone. A collaboration doesn't land. And outwardly, she stays composed, she stays alert, she stays like a boss. Internally though, something tightens. It's not panic, it's not drama, it's subtle activation. Rejection. Sensitivity is what lives in that activation. It's something more common, especially with neurodivergent leaders like myself. We pick up all the energy in the room, and we at times have a really hard time channeling through that energy and reading and processing it. We absorb it. More than we want to. Here's a story that you may recognize. There have been moments in my own work where I noticed this pattern so clearly, not during those obvious conflicts or deadlines, but during the silence. Those moments when, when I'll send out an email and it goes unanswered, or a delayed response, whether it's through text or through direct communication. My mind knew better. I had evidence. I have experience. I know who I am and what I present forward. But yet, in those subtle silent moments. My body didn't care that I was being logical. My body didn't register that I was processing these mentally. My body responded differently. My chest would tighten. My thoughts would sharpen. My system would quietly scan for what I may have missed. Not because I lacked confidence, but because somewhere along the way my nervous system learned that attunement to other people's energies, managing them, kept me safe. Reading people mattered. It's how I survived. It's how I built my business. And I realize I'm not alone here. Many high-performing women learned this early on when harmony mattered, when being perceptive was praised, when staying regulated meant staying connected. This is not a flaw, it's an adaptation, it's a conditioning, and it's something that when we're made aware of it, we realize is toxic. So what is rejection sensitivity really? What it's not is being thin-skinned. It really is a pattern. It's about pattern recognition going into overdrive. Your nervous system learned, if I notice shifts early, I can adjust. I could be ahead. I could be in control. So now subtle cues are amplified, those pauses, that neutral feedback, yes or no, there's that poker face, the ambiguity, the emotional distance. These are amplified. Your system fills in those blanks before your mind has a chance. And the higher you lead, the more often this gets activated, because leadership involves uncertainty, visibility, decision-making, risk. So how does it show up in leaders today? It's a very quiet thing. For high-capacity women, rejection sensitivity doesn't look chaotic. It's actually very, very quiet. It looks like replaying conversations after they end, overthinking, that rumination to see if you can weed out Oh, any negative possibilities? It looks like questioning decisions you've already made, feeling the urge to explain when silence would suffice. It looks like staying on even when you're resting. You carry this, but here's the thing, you don't fall apart. 'Cause you can't. You can't fall apart. That's what your brain tells you, right? I have to keep it together. I'm running a business. I'm running a leadership, running a company. So you carry that within you subtly in your cells because our body keeps score. And over time, That carrying, it creates fatigue. Not because you're doing too much, but because your system never fully settles in. It's like a high-pitched noise, a high-pitched vibration throughout your body, always. And here's something, in the beginning I thought, quote unquote, fix the problem. But what I've learned over the years in my coaching, in supporting these beautiful souls, and supporting women like myself, is that mindset alone is not enough. You can do 100 affirmations and still feel this buzz. You can say all the right things and still feel this, because here's the piece that most women miss. Intellectually, you can understand, hey, I'm carrying rejection sensitivity. It's a real thing, and it could still feel physically. You can carry it intellectually, and still feel it physically in your body, because it isn't about belief. It's a regulation pattern. Your body reacts before your mind interprets. That's why scent is so powerful, because it bypasses the logic, it bypasses the mindset. Your body responds almost immediately to a scent that can support you. So telling yourself, "I shouldn't take this personally," or "I'm doing all I can," doesn't always land when your system is already activated. That's why the work must start below the thought. So how does this work? How do we break the cycle? This is key. This is where my approach is different. We do not eliminate sensitivity. Sensitivity is so important. A heart-sensitive leader, a heart-led empathetic sensitive leader is such a beautiful asset to whatever they do. We stabilize the system underneath it. First, we regulate. We teach our bodies what safety feels like now, not through long routines, but through short, repeatable signals, so that your system stops bracing by default. The second thing we do is cognitive reframing without self-abandonment. Instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?" we ask, "What did my system just interpret? And is this interpretation current, or is it something that I've carried with me throughout the years?" This is able to restore authority without dismissing your experience. The third thing we do is use scent as a nervous system cue, because scent bypasses analysis. It tells the body, you're here, you're grounded. Your system learns a new response to uncertainty, learns presence, not vigilance. These are the things that help shift rejection sensitivity, because it's important to create calm leadership. When rejection sensitivity is regulated, you will still notice the nuance, but you won't absorb it. You will still care but you won't collapse inwardly. You will respond instead of react. Sensitivity becomes discernment. Leadership becomes spacious. And that is the goal, beautiful. Your energy no longer leaks through overexplaining or self-questioning. And this isn't to anybody else because you don't do that to anybody else. You do not present yourself as somebody who overexplains. You do not present yourself as somebody who questions everything to everybody else. This is for yourself, beautiful. This is in those moments when nobody else is around, learning to restore your energy so you do not ruminate. You can use your energy for better things like rest and productivity and enjoying where you are in your life. Did this episode name something that you felt but never fully articulated?
