There's something that high-functioning women don't talk about enough. We talk about things like boundaries, about mindset, we talk about leadership presence, but we don't talk about this. Why do certain personalities dysregulate us? You can be composed, honey. You can be strategic. You can be emotionally intelligent. And then someone walks into a room and your nervous system just goes off. It shifts. Your jaw tightens. Your chest compresses. Your thoughts get sharp or they get foggy. They get defensive. And you think, why does she get to me? Why does he get to me? Why does this person throw me off so much? I am stronger than this. Let me tell you something important, beautiful. Strength does not erase imprint. Let me repeat that. Strength Time does not erase imprint. It's a story we don't like to admit. Let me give you an example. I've worked with high-capacity women long enough to know something. The personality that dysregulates you today is usually the mirror of something from your past. It's subtle. Your nervous system recognizes your past in this present moment. That critical voice that sounds like a parent. The emotional chaotic person that reminds you of instability. That manipulative energy that feels like an old relational power dynamic. That passive-aggressive tone that makes you feel like you're about to be misunderstood again. Your body recognizes patterns before your brain ever catches up to it. You can be a leader, coach others, understand all the therapy tools, and still have a body that remembers. But that's not a weakness, that's your wiring. High functioning doesn't always mean that we're fully regulated. High performing women learned early, myself included, how to function in dysregulation. Speak to a woman who's a leader today, and she will remind you that she came from a very dysregulated place. These women have learned how to perform under emotional chaos, how to achieve while anxious, how to stay composed while internally activated. So when certain personalities show up now, it's not that you can't handle it, it's that your system is saying, "I've been here before," and your body immediately moves into hypervigilance, over-analysis, shutdown, over-explaining, proving, withdrawing, tight control. And you don't even realize it's happening in real time. You just feel really off. And the reason for that is because our past is triggered in our present. That's what we call the trauma bridge, the then and now. Trauma isn't just big events. You do not have to be in a war zone. You do not have to have had major things happen to you in your life to feel like trauma has taken over your body. Trauma, real chronic trauma, is repeated relational experiences where you weren't heard, you weren't safe, you weren't emotionally protected. You had to manage somebody else's instability. Now fast forward and here you are, you're leading, you're running a business, you're managing teams. And someone enters that space who carries a similar emotional signature, it's not the same person as the past, but the same energetic pattern that your past remembers. And your nervous system says, prepare, brace. That's why it feels so disproportionate because it's not about today, it's about cumulative memory. But here's the truth: sometimes it's not that they're being difficult, it's that they hit a wound you thought you outgrew, and that can feel humiliating. Especially when you're the strong one, the regulated one, the emotionally intelligent one. But here's what separates powerful women from reactive ones. Powerful women get curious instead of ashamed. They ask questions. Why does this tone affect me? Why does this dynamic tighten my body? What old role am I stepping into right now? That's cognitive behavioral therapy work. That's regulation work. That's leadership maturity. Let me give you a story. I once worked with a client who was wildly competent. 7-figure business, team under her, strategic mind. There was one employee, and every single time this employee spoke in meetings, my client felt destabilized. She replayed conversations. She lost sleep. She second-guessed herself. She would draft and redraft emails. It made no logical sense. She was the boss. Why did she feel this way? Well, we mapped it. The employee had the same communication style as a sibling who invalidated her growing up. It was quick. It was interrupting. It was subtle condescension. Her body didn't see employee. It saw old relational threat. When we named that, everything changed. Because now she recognized, wait a minute, I'm not broken, I'm patterned. And patterns can be rewired, they can be resourced. So how do you reclaim your steadiness, beautiful? I'll give you a few tips. First, Learn to separate your past from your present. Say something like this internally: This is not then, this is now. The second thing: Regulate before responding. Not intellectually, physiologically. Slow your breath down. Ground your feet. Lengthen your exhale. The third way: use cognitive behavioral therapy. So many cool tools. Ask yourself, what story am I telling myself right now? Is this actually an unsafe situation, or is it just familiar? And what evidence do I have to prove that I'm in a safe space now. Fourth thing you could try: decide from your leadership self, not your triggered self. This is where high-functioning women grow into high-regulated women, and that is different. There's a deeper layer here. Some personalities dysregulate you because You used to survive them. Now though, you don't have to survive. You get to choose. That's the shift. You are not that younger version anymore. Your nervous system just hasn't caught up to that truth yet, and that's okay. This isn't about becoming unbothered. It's about becoming steady even when bothered. That's leadership. That's maturity. That, beautiful soul, is emotional power. If this episode felt uncomfortably accurate, that means you're ready to evolve. Past it.
