Must Watch | Paid Ads for Yoga Teachers Before You Spend

In this solo podcast episode, Angelica Govaert (Yoga Liberty) explains when yoga teachers should start running paid ads, specifically on Meta. Drawing on over a decade of experience and millions earned from ads, she emphasizes that paid advertising should only be used for a proven offer—one that has already sold organically. She contrasts organic marketing’s warm audience with paid ads’ cold audience, outlining the higher financial risk, the need for sufficient budget, and the importance of risk tolerance. Angelica details landing‑page best practices for paid campaigns, such as urgency, risk reversal, and legal compliance, and stresses the necessity of iterative creative testing without ego. She shares her personal backstory of moving from poker to yoga entrepreneurship, using poker’s lessons on risk to illustrate the mindset needed for paid ads. Finally, she promotes her mentorship program, templates, and other resources for teachers who want help building offers and running ads, while encouraging viewers to comment on topics like budgeting for ads.

Welcome everyone to the Yoga Liberty Podcast. My name's Angelica. I'm known as Yoga Liberty on social media, and I'm so glad that you're here. Today's topic is when should you start running paid ads, right? All about paid ads. We're going to talk about paid advertising specifically on Meta, which is where I run ads, and I have run ads since 2008 on Meta, and they have made me multiple millions of dollars. I am not saying that you will get those results. I'm just saying those are the results that I got. I also put a lot of time money into learning paid advertising. I worked with, I want to say, 4 or 5 different coaches on paid ads. Might've been more. I watched lots of YouTubes on them. I have studied it. I have paid a lot of money in ads. I, in fact, I think last time I checked, it was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars that I've spent on paid ads, just on my current business, not including what I did with the yoga studio. So I have a lot of experience in paid advertising. I'm not saying that you'll get the same results as me. However, I have helped people get really great results in paid ads. And I do think that it's a great way to amplify your proven offer and make yourself more money. All right. So this is part of a 4-part series that I created. I was, I presented at a summit online and she asked me 4 or 5 questions that I thought, well, you know what? Other people really probably have these questions too. And so I decided to make full episodes about it. I was inspired to do that. Thank you for having me here. I'm really grateful to be here with you today. I'm grateful that you're here watching this video. And if you want to check out any of those other videos, it's on like low ticket versus high ticket, what should be your first course. This one's on paid advertising. And then I'm also going to do a video on organic marketing. So make sure that you subscribe so that you can watch all of those and check them out. I do have a full playlist on the business of yoga and How to make money as an online yoga teacher. I do primarily focus on online because, um, I used to own studios. Before that, I drove around all over town for $20, and I don't really like to teach in person anymore. It's— I like to stay at home. I like to be at my house with my dog and my man, and I like to have my freedom, and I like to actually be able to practice yoga, which is something that I never could do when I owned a studio. So if you know, you know. And I just like a quieter, simpler life than what I used to have. So if that's something something that interests you. Maybe online interests you. There's lots of reasons to go online. I also, I started my online business because we were traveling full-time and I wanted to, wanted to travel. So, okay. Let's talk about paid advertising because that's why you're here today. All right. And who should be doing paid ads and when you should decide to start doing paid ads. As far as like budget and stuff like that goes, I really feel like that could almost be another video, but I want to say this about paid ads is that if you try to do paid ads at a small amount, like you're just like, I'm just to spend like $5 a day, you will fail. Paid ads are expensive. You're going to have to put some skin in the game. You're going to have to like actually put money in to make money. They, they won't convert unless you can compete in the marketplace. So, you know, I think I don't want to get too much into that because that really is like a full video in itself. And if you want a video on budgeting and how to budget for your paid ads, make a comment below that that's something that you're interested in. And I'll, I'll make that video. If I don't get any comments about that, then I'm Maybe I won't make that video. Maybe I will. I don't know. I'm wild. I contain multitudes. Okay. So when do you know you should start running paid ads? I almost feel like people who have a lot of money coming into their business are disabled in a way because you can just waste money on things and not really have to be very frugal about what it is that you're spending money on. And paid advertising is something that I think that you should make frugal choices about. Do not run paid ads if no one's ever purchased your offer organically. If no one has ever, like, if you've never posted on social media and been like, hey, check this out, this is my new offer. And people bought it. Like if that has never happened, you should not be running paid ads. You need to have a proven offer. And by proven, I mean something that people have already purchased, something that people are like, oh, this is something that I like. And I would like to buy it. If your offer hasn't been purchased before by anyone, don't run paid ads. You don't know if it's good. It's so much easier to sell organically than it is to do through paid ads. And the reason why is like organic marketing, which is anything that you post for free, like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, any of that, right? Organic marketing is really much easier to make a sale because they're what we call a warm audience. They're people who are already interested in what it is you do. They already like you. You don't have to break down that customer resistance. Whereas paid advertising, is something that is going to a cold audience. They may never have seen you before, or they've only seen you in passing. They don't know much about you. They aren't really that interested in you, right? Those things, that's gonna be a lot harder. It requires your landing page to be set up a much more specific way. There are different, like, best practices in landing pages that are— I just need to fix my hair. There are different best practices in the landing pages that are for paid ads and landing pages that are for organic marketing. Now, a paid advertising landing page will work on organic because honestly, organic marketing doesn't really need a lot of bells and whistles to sell because people already want to buy from you. The more that you post, the more people love you and like you, the more likely they are to purchase from you. People don't buy because of the offer. They buy because of you. People buy people, right? So the same person could be doing a course on Bakasana and getting your first float. And if one person One is like, say it's like a guy that does acrobatics and he's really masculine. And the other person is like a, like me, like a little chunky, like girls girl. You would pick the person that most, you most identify with, right? Like immediately when I said that, you had a preference. Immediately when I said that, you had a preference of which teacher you would like. They might be teaching exactly the same skillset. So it really doesn't matter what the topic is even. It matters like who the teacher is, right? You are what sells your product. So keep that in mind. The other thing is that your, your paid advertising landing page, it just needs to have like urgency. It needs to have like risk reversal. You need to have like certain legal things on the bottom. These are all things that I teach inside of my course. I actually provide people with templates for landing pages, so if that's something you're interested in, you can go into the description below and book a time to meet with me or my team and talk about building your online offers with us. If you already have an online offer and it's not selling, I do offer a mentorship. The link to that is also below in the description. So check that out because what I do works for me. It's worked for a lot of other people. I, I, it's not gonna work for everybody. If you're lazy, it's not gonna work for you. It's not magic. It's marketing. That's, that's, you know, you are going to have to do work. Paid ads do come with a higher level of risk. They do come with financial risk. However, you know, if you aren't making money on paid ads, don't keep paying for ads. You know, there's something wrong with your ad. And we can talk about that again. If you like, if you really want to hear more about that, put, make a comment below and I'll, and I'll make another video about it. But deciding to run paid ads has to do with, is your offer proven? Like, is your offer something that people have already bought? Another thing is like, how willing are you to do risk? And something that really came out that was really interesting in that conference that I talked at was that I started telling her about how I used to be a poker player. So I was in retail for a long time. And then in 2008, I lost my retail job because it was like the recession and a lot of people lost their job at that time. I decided to pursue my dreams of becoming a yoga teacher. There's a lot in between those 2 things happening, a lot of trauma and, and ridiculousness and crazy things happened. But I moved across the country and I started teaching yoga again from Miami. I moved to Las Vegas and I started teaching yoga all over, driving all over town. And I was really into poker at that time. I thought it was, it was like when online poker was big and I was like, I just thought it was fun and World Series of Poker and everybody was watching it and I was interested. And so I wanted to be a part of that. And so I started to teach yoga to professional poker players. And then I would, they would pay me for that. Or I would like stay at their big houses or whatever. It was like a way I could live somewhere nice. And one day I was like, hey, how are you doing this? Like, tell me about poker. How do you play poker? And so these like big-time people that make, you know, hundreds of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars online taught me how to play poker. And so I started playing very low stakes. I did not play the same stakes as they, I think the highest game I ever bought into was like $1,000, but I played played like low stakes poker and I used that money to pay my bills over the coming years until I saved up enough money to buy my first yoga studio and to open my first yoga studio with money that I made playing poker. This is such a Vegas story. Anyhow, so what I learned from poker though is about risk, right? And that's really the point of this story is that what I learned was about risk. So if you have a low risk tolerance, you are not going to like paid ads. However, You will never make it at, at a level, like if you want to make 6 figures, I don't mean to say never, because some people do do organic and do well. It's rare. It's really rare. Um, my coach that taught me how to do organic marketing, which is like what you post for free, she makes about a 10th of what I do now. And I remember when she, when I worked with her, I chose her because she was very successful financially. So, uh, she refuses to do any paid ads even though I beg her to. Um, and I'm like, I'll teach you, I'll help you. She just doesn't want to. So, you know, everybody's different. She would rather trade her time for money and post online a lot more. I, I don't have to post as much as she does. She posts sometimes 4 times a day. I typically try to post once a day, you know, so, you know, it's a different model. I want more free time to myself. I also have like really big risk tolerance. Poker taught me that sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. There would be days that I would go home and I would have less money than I started. There would be days when I would go home and I would have a lot more money than I started. And I am able to manage that emotionally. I'm able to go, you know, a week without making a sale and spend $1,000 on ads, right? I'm able to spend $30,000 on ads in a month and not feel stressed out about it. So deciding to To do ads also comes with your level of risk tolerance. Like, are you willing to play that game? And, and I think of it as a game, right? Like for me, it's like the poker. It's like a whole, it's a new poker. I think that there's a lot of the online marketer people that were in the poker space. So I kind of see them out there, you know, it's just the same kind of feel, but that's not to say that it isn't for everyone. It's, well, it isn't for everyone, you know, it's not to say that it isn't for you. It's not to say that it is for you. That's a very personal decision. And I love paid advertising. I love figuring out which creatives are going to work. That's another thing, you know, like your ads probably suck. Sometimes my ads suck, you know, like I have an ads coach right now that works with Russell Brunson and helps him run his ads. And that's super cool. But he like just told me straight up last time I ran, he was like, your ads are bad. And I was like, well, this is what was in my mind behind this. You know, I've been going through a real change in my business and how I want to run it. And that was all part of it. And he was like, you can't, these aren't good. So I had to redo all of them and he wrote some ad copy for me and they have been doing well. So you have to be open to that and really have no ego around. You have to be able to look at things analytically and not have an ego around it because not all ads are going to work. Not everybody wants to buy what you want to sell. You should definitely go back and check out my video on how to do, you know, what your offer, how to decide on your offer, because that video It will be pivotal to being successful at paid ads, like organic and paid ads really work together. So keep that in mind. All right. Make sure that you subscribe, check out the other videos in the series. You can also check out the playlist on all my business of yoga. And if you want help building your business, I would love to help you. I like doing that. I like helping yoga teachers grow. I think that that amplifies my karma when I can help you. Help other people. You know, if you're making yoga for perimenopause and it helps other women, fantastic. That also means that I'm getting some good in the karma saya and helping more people. And that's, I think that's it. That's it. Thank you so much. I'm super grateful to you. And I look forward to seeing you in the next video. If there's anything that you, any topics that you would like, if there's anything that struck a chord with you, leave it in the comments below and maybe I'll make a video about it. All right. I'll see you later. Bye.
