A military supervisor tells the speaker to respect the rank, not the person. When you clash with leadership over blocked tasks, you still have to work within the chain of command. It's about surviving the system, not liking who runs it.

One of my first supervisors in the military, he saw me basically butt heads or run ram heads with senior leadership when I was trying to do the right thing, trying to get shit done, and they were stonewalling me. And he pulled me aside and he's like, hey, look, he goes, if there's anything I can tell you is one is you have to respect the rank. You don't have to respect the person that wears it.
