Areeb Mirza explains why filmmakers should use external recorders: they capture higher-quality video and log/RAW formats your camera can't, double as monitors to improve output, and record in codecs that are easier to edit than what most cameras produce natively.

Start using an external recorder. Here's why. Firstly, it allows you to get the best out of your camera by providing higher quality recordings. If your camera lacks built in log or RAW capabilities, the external recorder can fill this gap. Moreover, external monitors can enhance your camera's video output, making them essential for serious filmmakers using cinema cameras or mirrorless cameras. Another significant advantage of using external recorders is the availability of edit friendly codecs. This one's my favorite. Many consumer and prosumer cameras, especially mirrorless cameras, tend to compress footage using codecs that are suitable for file size reduction and easy playback, but not ideal for editing and color grading purposes. By recording externally, you gain access to more suitable codecs for post production tasks.
