How To Create High Engagement Email List by Amy Porterfield | List Building | with Avi Arya

Amy Porterfield shares strategies for building an engaged email list with Avi Arya and his family. They discuss launching online courses around your passions, why community matters more than list size, and how video marketing drives real engagement with your audience.
Hey there. My name is Amy Porterfield. I live in Carlsbad, California, right outside of San Diego. I have a hunky firefighter husband named Hobie, an 18 year old stepson named Cade, and my favorite dog named Scally. And I was a former corporate, corporate yes girl working in a cubicle for many, many years until I branched out on my own to build my own online marketing business that is now a multi million dollar business. Helping entrepreneurs build businesses online that they absolutely love. Never ever create a business around something you don't absolutely love. There's a sweet spot, you've got to love to do it and there's got to be an audience that's willing to buy. And so when you combine that, that's your sweet spot. The first thing I always tell my students when they want start a business online is to first figure out your expertise and your skill set and your knowledge. And there's three different approaches you can use. Number one, you need to have either gotten results for yourself and you can teach that to somebody else, or you've gotten results for somebody else and you could teach how you got those results for somebody else inside a course or group coaching or membership or if you you have mastered some kind of skill software application and you can teach that.
My name is ABHI Arya, Father of two girls, six dogs, husband to a superwoman, a streetcar racer turned hotelier, now social media marketer and co founder, sorry, girls of the Internet, Moguls of the world school, over to you. That's Raya.
That was awesome. Hi Raya. How are you doing? Good, how are you? I'm good. Good. So nice to see you again.
Yeah, I know dad and I really enjoyed your talk.
Oh well, it was a fun time for sure. So I'm glad I'm here. Now do you want me to do my quick little talk thing that you just did? Okay.
Yes, please. Yes. The hero introduction please.
Hey there. My name is Amy Porterfield. I live in Carlsbad, California, right outside of San Diego. I have a hunky firefighter husband name Hobie, an 18 year old stepson named Cade, and my favorite dog named Scout. And I was a former corporate yes girl working in a cubicle for many, many years until I branched out on my own to build my own online marketing business that is now a multimillion dollar business helping entrepreneurs build businesses online that they absolutely love.
Awesome. Excellent. And for all the audiences watching there, Amy didn't know that this question was coming. Thank you very much. Raya. Over to you, sweetheart.
Okay, so my first question is, you know, when I was researching a little bit more, it said that you are very good at creating an engaged email list. So what is your strategy? What is one of your strategies strategy do you use to do that?
Yeah, I believe that having an email list is essential to anybody building an online business. It's an asset that you must have. I always say that the energy of your business is directly tied to the strength of your email list. And so I take this very, very seriously. And one of the ways that I engage my audience is that I only talk to one person every time I sit down to write an email. So so I think about writing to a friend and I speak as casually and add as much vulnerability and personality as possible to my emails so that people really feel like I am reaching out to them. I'm here as a friend with some value to add. So that's one of my secrets to success.
That is fantastic. So you write all your emails yourself?
No, I used to write all my emails myself. Now I have a copywriter that helps me. So we do a little bit of both.
Got it, Aviana.
So my first question.
I interrupt you for one second. Sorry. You know, Amy, so the format of this interview is going to go in a series. So like I said, it's a family digital marketing school. So questions that kids have, questions that, you know, their parents have middle aged and questions that maybe my parents would have to say, how can we get online? So we go through a series of all of those. Okay, Aviana, back to you.
So my first question is my passion is around horses and currently I'm learning to ride and take care of horses. So what type of online business can I create so that I'm around horses all my life?
Oh, I love this question. So if you want to create an online business around your passion and your specifically is horses, you want to think of first, who do you want to create? Anything that you want to create for? So who is your ideal customer avatar, your ica? So I want you to think of who do you want to serve? Who do you want to support? And then when you do that, you think, well, what do they need? What challenges do they have? What do they want to know more about what lights them up as it relates to horses in your passion. So first think about who you want to market to and sell to and create for. And then think, well, what do they need? What do they want? And if you're not sure, you start to ask them, ask them, have questions prepared for them, get into conversation with them. They'll tell you what they need and what they want. But always remember this, Never ever create a business around something you don't absolutely love. There's a sweet spot, you've got to love to do it and there's got to be an audience that's willing to buy. And so when you combine that, that's your sweet spot. So I love that you're starting with horses and you stay focused on that.
Thank you.
Lovely. So love what you do and see that there's an audience for that.
Yes.
Okay, awesome. So do you, do you sort of, you know, the kicks in now after the kids question, do you. I need to take care of my family once I'm running a business. I understand the kids passion. I have a passion as well. How do I make sure that my. How do I. How do I find out that this passion actually is monetizable?
Great question. So the way to find out if your passion is actually something that is monetizable is to start to do some research. So what I always say is experiment with some content. So let's say that you start a blog or a podcast or maybe even a video show. I really do believe that you need to start putting out free content first and seeing how it resonates with whoever it is that you want to serve. I love starting out with free content. Maybe even you create a free guide or free video series or something of value and see if people will actually give you their name and email in exchange for that free content. The first step to validating an idea to make sure people actually pay for your passion is to see if they will consume your content and, and when it's free. If they give up their name and email, that's a hot commodity they're giving up. So that's one step closer to, oh, maybe I'm on to something. So get into conversation with people, engage with them online. Use social media to test out your ideas and create content to see if people will really engage with it and if it's going to be relevant to them.
Lovely. Understood. So, you know, when I were there at your event and thank you very much for having us there, Jill and Josh and Greg Smith shout out to him. He was like, you need to be at that event. And we were very happy we got those passes. And so I saw that there were people from all businesses who were there from all backgrounds, all businesses. And your message appealed to everyone, saying that anybody can start an online business. So what would be the starting points of somebody watching this interview at all levels? Like I said, Internet, mobile, a family digital marketing school. A mom is watching this. A dad who might have lost his job is watching this. You know, two kids who might be saying, should I continue my higher education or should I, you know, get into an online business? What would be the building blocks of planning, strategizing to start a business?
So the first thing I always tell my students when they want to start a business online is to first figure out your expertise and your skill set and your knowledge. And there's three different approaches you can use. So let's pretend you want to create a digital course, but this could work for a coaching business. This could work for group membership kind of program. It runs across the board. But let's pretend you want to create a digital course. So what I always tell my students is, number one, you need to have either gotten results for yourself and you can teach that to somebody else, or you've gotten results for somebody else and you could teach how you got those results for somebody else inside a course or group coaching or membership, or you have mastered some kind of skill software application and you can teach that. So let me give you a quick example. One of my students, she lost 50 pounds, and she was a busy doctor and she worked all hours and she was grabbing snacks at any time and she wasn't exercising. She was exhausted and she had gained £50 on the job. So she decided, I am not happy, I have no energy. I want to change that. So she put her own plan together, and over the next few months she lost 50 pounds. Other busy female physicians wanted to know how she did it. So she eventually created a course teaching other people how she lost the weight. So she got results for herself. Then she started to teach it to other people. You need to be able to prove that you can get results for people or get them the desire they want. The way you do that is you first prove it yourself or you help somebody else get those results. So now you've proved it there, or you're really good at some kind of application, some kind of system or processy that you've gotten results there and you can teach how you've done that. Like, for example, there's a free design software called canva C A N V A and one of my students is really good at it. She's able to get in there and make These beautiful designs, PDFs and different photos and images. So she can create a course teaching other people how to use this free software to do amazing things with design, even if you're not a designer. But she knows the software well, so she could teach it. So there's a lot of different things that you could do, but you need to know your expertise and your skillset, and you need to be able to get people results first. You got to get results for yourself or for somebody else.
Got it. So in these times, if somebody has been homeschooling their children and now the whole world may be gravitating towards the idea that that could be a good.
Online course for sure. Definitely. Great idea.
Got it. Thank you. Raya, back to you.
Okay, so my next question is, how did you get into the right ecosystem? So with Jill and Josh and a whole bunch of other friends, it's a struggle to get into the right ecosystem where people know you well enough. So how did you do that?
That's a great question. So I have been at this for 11 years, and in the very beginning, when I left my corpor and I started my online business, I joined a mastermind. Now, I paid for the mastermind to be a part of it, and it was ran by a woman entrepreneur that had great success. And there were other. There are 20 other budding entrepreneurs in the group as well. And all year, we work together and we shared ideas and we networked and we learned. And so I became friends with some of those women, and then I continued those friendships over the next 10, 11 years. So I really placed myself into different networking opportunities, whether they be paid like that mastermind, or I would show up at events like you and your dad did, and I would meet new people, and I would go the extra mile to keep those relationships. I'd reach out to them. We'd text message, email, meet on Facebook or whatever it might be. You really do need to do the work. But I want to mention something that I think is really important. One thing that I haven't done well over these 11 years is I haven't expanded my circle to different types of people, different races, different religions. And so I quite honestly looked at my network, and it was almost all white, white peers, white men and women. And these networks and masterminds were not diverse. And so now I'm on a mission that when I go into a mastermind, when I go to a networking event, when I speak on stage, I want to ensure that there's diversity there. There's other voices that need to be heard that are so important. And so I need to move out of my just little safe bubble and expand. And I'll be a better marketer, I'll be a better businesswoman, and I'LL be a better human if I expand my circle. So for anybody listening that you're looking to get into masterminds, you're looking to start something or network, make sure it's a diverse group because we need more voices. And that's one of the mistakes I made along the way.
You know, whatever work you've done has spoken for itself even before. Some of my friends, like Greg is a very good friend. He's almost. He's a neighbor. We live in the same locality and we work in downtown Vancouver. Even before I heard about you from him, we heard about you from various sources. So it's great to have, I mean, a diverse network and all of that. But let me tell you the awesome work that you've done over the years. We've heard about you from everywhere. So the word travels will do good work. So thank you very much for inspiring us to say if somebody can do good work and be consistent with it, you automatically get found. So. Yeah. And so I wanted to tell you a little bit about Raya's story. So Raya wanted to, you know, a couple of years back, Raya and I, she's like, dad, can I also become a digital marketer? And I was like, why do you want to? She said, because I know a little bit. I go for conferences and I also come to the office. You know, I told you we have a large team. Raya sits with the photography team, the video team and all of that. I said, you sure can. But when you go and sell your products to them, people tell people how to do social media. Would you rather do that or share your story? And then we discovered Raya's story was, you know, she went through bullying and she lost 15 pounds and found her confidence and all of that. And now that's her story. Right? You want to tell her your story and. And you know, that sort of leads into your next question.
Yeah, sure. So, okay, so from that, I guess I. The bullying kind of gave me that motivation to just show them what I could do and show myself what I could do. And So I lost £15 and I felt really confident. That's kind of led me to today where I, like, even this morning I was working out before this and all that, and I feel like really good about myself. So that was another question that I asked you at the conference as well. Do you create a course like you said? How do you get that course? How do you get the right people into your course?
Such a good question. So the way you get the right people into that Course goes back to something I said earlier, where you've got to get crystal clear on who your ideal customer avatar is. Who do you want to create for? And when I say that, what I mean is, is it a woman or is it a man? How old is she? What are her challenges? What are her fears? What does she love to do? What keeps her up at night? What's always circling around in her head? What does she need and want most? So if you create a let's pretend it's a girl. So you create a Persona, give her a name, picture her in your mind, and think, I am creating for her. I know it sounds crazy to only create for one person, but it's kind of like the magic of marketing. Sometimes I can't even put it into words. When you get really crystal clear on who you market to lot of people that will be like, that one person will find you. And so that's the first thing that you get the right people into your course when you know who you're creating for. And then from there, you've got to do the work and go find her. Now, there's two ways I could talk about finding her. Number one, you create content for her every single week. I am a big fan of the idea that you should blog every week or podcast every week or do a video show every week. Every week you should have consistent content. My good friend John Lee Dumas of Entrepreneur on Fire, he taught me that 10 years ago, that every week you want to have new content out there. Original and new content that will attract her, but then it will also nurture all the people you've already attracted because they're going to be so excited. You have new content this week, and you're sharing something new. Once they get into your world, they're going to ask what else you got. What you'll have for them is a digital course that you can sell them. They're going to want to go deeper with you, but it first starts with that free original content.
Wow. Okay. That definitely answered the question.
Cool.
And JLD was with us last week, same time.
Oh, good. I love him.
He's awesome. Aviana.
Okay, so my next question is I. So I'm 10, and if I was.
To create 6, you won't grow up. I told you to remain 6, remember?
Oh, and she keeps growing up. Dang it.
I know. When she says that, I'm like, what happened to our promise? Sorry, go ahead.
So if I was to create an online course in community, should I do it with someone or should I Do it on my own. And my second question, which is related to this is how should.
Like, should you choose some. Should she choose someone her age or, you know, what type of community should she create?
Great question. What's that?
I said, do everything with your daddy, sweetheart.
Yes. Everything with your daddy. That's exactly what you should do. I remember when I was really young, my dad used to tell me that I was going to marry him. I was really little, but I remember thinking I was going to marry my dad. It was just like a done deal. So I know what that's like, loving your dad so much. So I think that if you were going to do some kind of a community, I love the idea of you doing it with someone else. When you are 10 years old, I think it would be really fun for you to create something with someone else. And one, you don't have to do all the work yourself, but two, you could bounce ideas off of each other and get those creative juices flowing. So I love that idea. I think either doing it with somebody your age, or if you don't want to do it with someone your age, do it with someone like your dad who has a lot of experience so that other person can really add value and help you with the things you don't know yet. So you could. I think that would be a great thing. So you could continue to learn and you could do so. I think both options are really good. Now. Was one of the questions, what should you create the community about?
Yeah, what should my. Like, how should I create the community and what should it be about?
So I love the idea if Facebook is an option for you. I don't know if your age is on Facebook at all. Do you use Facebook at all? No. No. So if Facebook's not a community that you would use, I would find out. Okay, first, remember, we got to go back to your ideal customer avatar. Whoever you want to serve, find out where they're spending time. And so whatever platform they're spending time, find a way to create community there. And what I would love to see you do is make it definitely about horses. And you could talk about what you love about horses. You could talk about all the different things about horses, what you've learned, what you know. You can make videos just sharing your own experiences and encourage people to share their experiences with horses as well. Horses is a great topic for a community, for sure. We just got to find out where your audience is spending time and go there.
Okay, perfect.
Awesome. So, Amy, you know what? Like I said, I've Been running an agency for 11 years now. We were proud to say we were completely bootstrapped. We had nobody. I mean, we didn't. There were no VCs or all of that helping us. And so we knew how to make money from month one. And now 11 years later, honestly, Covid did take away 70% of the business. I don't know if it's going to come back, but we're still in a pause state of affairs. As far as the agency goes, everybody's home, we're waiting for things to come up. While I find myself when I was 11 years old, I'm saying even today, people especially, more so after this Covid situation, people don't have time or money to invest into businesses, to see them flourish after a year or two. They don't have the seed money or to flower their garden for a year or so. So what are the specific 2, 3 actionable steps they can do to be able to start creating an income as soon as possible?
Great question. So I too started my business 11 years ago, like you, with no money to invest in. And bootstrapping from the very beginning. So you and I are an example of this can be done with very little money. And if you're going to build a business online, the first thing you want to think about is building this audience. And social media is a great way to do so. So using Facebook and Instagram and LinkedIn in order to figure out who your audience is and start attracting them with your weekly content like we already talked about. But I really do believe that once you get that little foundation going, you've got to grow your email list. Because here's the greatest thing. When you have an email list, you have an asset that you could sell to over and over and over again. I did this experiment a few months ago when I was speaking on stage. Right before I went on stage to talk about list building, I did an experiment where I sent one email out to a thousand people on my list. So just 1,000 people, which is a milestone for people just starting with list building, focus on just getting the first thousand people. So I sent one email to a thousand people and I said, I'm going to do a live workshop in a week and I'm going to teach you xyz. I just created a topic I knew my audience would like and I said, it's going to be $197. So I haven't created it yet. I'm creating it. I'm delivering it next week live. $197. Here's a link to sign up. So within 48 hours we had made $6,000 with an email list of 1,000 people in a product I had not yet created. But I know my audience well, I know my ideal customer avatar, so I know what they wanted. And so we sent that one email and then 24 hours later we sent one follow up email. So it turned out two emails, 48 hours, $6,000 with a list of 1,000 people. This is possible for you as well, as long as you find the right people to join your email list. Social media is fickle. The algorithms change all the time. You don't want to build your business on rented land, but you own your email list. So anybody just starting a business, if I could give you any advice, it's to start your email list now. I waited two years to start my email list and I left a lot of money on the table and I was very stressed by failed launches that didn't. So that's what I would do if I was just starting a business again today.
Got it. I really love that idea. That is so actionable. You know I we the last during lockdown we realized that like I said, one part of the business was completely, you know, pause for now. And so we did. In the last 60, 75 days we've done 75 webinars and we've created an email list of 113,500 people. So we worked very hard during Corona to sort of rebuild a brand and grow an email list and all of that. So we were now just thinking and yeah, it was a lot of fun. The team supported us because we were like, almost everybody felt like it's a new start. What should we do? So two hours of webinar planning, two and a half, three hours of the webinar and two hours of follow up time. So six, seven hours every day and we have 113,500 people on the list on this new list with this new 75 day activity. So very proud that we have because what we teach in that specific program, we call it Micro Video Mastery. We say short videos to introduce yourself, the hero introduction, short videos for sales and videos, you know, in for various capacities. Now when it comes to emails, you I see people selling products and you know like somebody will promote a product with an affiliate link or they promote their own course or sometimes send an email to say hey, I'm just block one hour of time with me for $50 a call or whatever. So what are the kind of options like somebody watching this show, I want to I want this, I want, I want. I'm trying to answer the question of that 45 year old lady who's sitting at home and thinking, you know, I need to now chip in. Maybe because I'm not working now, I need to help my husband, but I still don't want to go to work. I want to stay with my family or that 50 year old man who's thinking, you know what, I need to, I need to keep my head up, head high and still retain my confidence and take care of my kids. And also maybe the 70 year old person who's like, I need to now get back. I know what I want. And I've understood from Amy the ideal customer avatar. I know I should create an email list. So maybe a couple of ideas on how you create a lead magnet to be able to get your ideal customer.
Yes. So one of my favorite topics is how to create a lead magnet that will attract your ideal customer avatar. So a lead magnet is a piece of free content. So it might mean it's a simple checklist, PDF or a simple guide or some kind of blueprint or roadmap. It could be a 20 minute audio, it could be a 20 minute, 10 minute video. So there's a lot of different formats that you could use for your lead magnet. But what's most important is the content. So you want to think about when you're thinking about who you want to teach and what you want to teach or how to add value, where is an area where your audience might be getting stuck? What's something that they really would find valuable from you? What's something you could give them that they think, holy cow, I can't believe this is free. This is so good. And so start there and start at the very beginning of their journey where they're at right now. So let me give you an example. If I am a, I'm a dog walker and I want to start growing my online business to be teaching people how to discipline their dogs online, then I might think about like the number one challenge most people with dogs have. And so one of them is barking. So my dog barks at everything and anything all the time and it drives me crazy. So if you gave me a 15 minute free video on how to get my dog not to bark at everything, I'm paying attention. It's a struggle I have, so I want to pay attention. I'll give you my very hot commodity name and email in exchange for that. Now once I watch that, I'm going to think, well, what else you Got I want something else and maybe you'll eventually sell me something. But first it starts with great value so you can build that know like and trust factor. It's something free that people will give their name and email for. And it does not need to be complicated. It's not a 90 page ebook. It's not something that will take them a month to get through. They're going for a quick hit, something easy to digest.
Perfect. Perfect. Sounds excellent. You had a question?
Yeah. So my last question is we use the term Internet moguls a lot and for us the definition of an Internet mogul is someone who spends quality time with their family but also works hard on improving and growing their business. So what would your definition of an Internet mogul be?
Oh, I love your definition for sure. I'd say an Internet mogul is somebody who has created a life and a business that they absolutely love and that is on their terms. So they have freedom. They work from wherever they want, they work when they want and how they want. They call the shots, they call their hours as well as they give back considerably. So I think that you don't earn that title mogul unless you're giving more than you're taking. And I think that's important as well.
Just to like I said, we've got six dogs. They're rescued next to our house in Vancouver and they keep sending dogs and we're supposed to send those dogs back once they find the owner but we forget that in between and we keep getting them not to go back.
Makes me love you even more.
This is more the girls and their mommy, you know. And so Raya decided with Abhiana when we started the venture a they decided that I'm going to be their manager. I said no, we're going to be equal partners. So we shot that idea down. Remember Raya? But the other thing was they decided that we percentage of whatever happens with this new school project and online summit and everything we're doing is going to go to the favorite rescue in Vancouver.
So love that. I love it.
So because you came up with the dog walking example, you know, it just took us back to dogs again with you.
Okay, so my next question is how do you launch something like a course? Like you said, you shot that email out. You did. You do need to get your perfect avatar. But how do you get people excited enough? How do you launch something new that they get enough people to want to buy that product, to buy that course? And what is your competitive advantage?
Okay, so one of the best ways to get people excited about wanting to buy your course or whatever it else might be that you're going to sell is that you want to talk about benefits and not the features. So let me give you an example. If I was selling a digital course, I'm not going to talk about the features. Like, there's 10 videos, there's three audios, there's PDF. Those are the features. But the benefits are what's in it for them, why should they care? So if I was talking about this dog training online course that I want to create, I would talk about the fact that your dog will be calm and will walk on a leash so well that you have really relaxing walks now instead of being stressed out the whole time. And your dog will no longer be barking in your ear where you feel like you're going to come unglued. But your house is calm, your dog is well behaved. Those are the benefits that somebody's looking for. So you think about their challenge and then you think, how can I solve that? And you talk about the results that you can get them. So one of the best ways to talk about benefits is through video, just like we're doing here. So for many years I was shy about doing video. I didn't feel good about myself. I too was overweight and just was feeling sluggish and not good. And I didn't want to get on video. Then I thought, wait a second. My competitive edge can be video if I really start building up my confidence and self love. So like you, Raya, I started to work out, I started to take care of myself, I started to make health a priority and I started to feel confident. No matter what you look like, you can be confident in yourself and love yourself. So when I started to do that, I started to do more video. And video gives you a competitive edge. People connect with you, they see you, they hear you. It's more personal. So anybody building an online business right now, I want to encourage you embrace video because your competitor likely won't want to do it as much so you can stand out from everybody else. So I think video is a great way to get people excited about what you want to sell.
Awesome. That helps a lot because I just recently started my YouTube channel. So that great.
You'd be great on YouTube. It's perfect. Thank you.
You want to tell her about what your topic and how you what, just like your hero introduction?
Sure. And maybe you could oh, my dog's breaking everything. And maybe you could give some tips on it. I just started my YouTube channel on like self love and like that's the main message. Because throughout losing weight and bullying, I really had to be confident in myself and say I love myself even when you don't believe it. And so started a message. The message is to love yourself and to be confident in yourself and the validation from others should come in from yourself. And so I do videos around that topic. So, like, I recently did a video of finding, like I tried a dance, a different dance class than usual, which is around the topic of loving yourself because you're trying new things to find yourself.
So do you have a tips for this now?
It's so good. I love this that you're getting on video, you're trying new things, you're encouraging self love 100% and really fine tuning your message so that people know that it's about how you think about yourself. I think the biggest. I wish someone taught me early on when I was your age to not care what other people think. And so if you can literally not care what anybody else thinks but you and how you love yourself, the world is yours. And so I love this message and I'm so glad you're doing it.
Thank you. It's hard because I just started to get people to actually believe in that message and follow it is hard, but I'm working on it.
Oh, it takes time, but you'll get there.
Thank you.
So, you know, I like the idea. Just.
Message and follow.
It is hard, but I'm working on it.
Oh, it takes time, but you'll get there.
Thank you.
So, you know, I like the idea. Just.
No, he's coming.
I'll just wait for a couple of seconds. Okay. I'll be back in a second. I'll just record off.
Okay.
So then I can ask you a different question. So, you know, we talk about rituals in our book. We just wrote a book before this one called Bedtime Stories for Tomorrow's Entrepreneurs.
I saw that. Yeah.
Yes. And we talk about rituals and how they're important in just shaping who you are. So do you, Amy Porterfield, have any rituals that you do every day that have helped you to get where you are today?
Yes. So one of my rituals is that I get up before everybody else in the house. And so usually around 5:30am and I like the alone time so that I could do some quick journaling. I don't spend too much time on it. Just some quick journaling, get the thoughts out of my head onto paper. So I start the day with a clean slate. And so I first journal and then from there, I walk my dog for 30 minutes and then I work out for another 30. So every single morning, I am working out, moving my body and clearing my head. And these rituals, they are not about losing weight or making my body look good. They are about my mind. And so managing my mind and getting my mindset in the right place so that I can attack the day in as much positivity as possible is essential for me to be successful in my online business. So being regimented with these working outs and journaling has been priceless for me.
Lovely. One question I've been wanting to ask for almost a year, and this even before we met for the first time. Like I said, from the last 11 years, running an agency, traveling around the world, you meet a lot of interesting people. The girls and I went to Gary Vee's office multiple times. We met Grant Cardo, we met a lot of people and we heard about you from so many quarters. Right. And then we finally met you and we grateful to have you on this show and part of the Internet moments of the world. I always wanted to ask you, your 11 years you started your journey inspired so many people. Now if you say I'm doing an event, you know, all you need to say is, I'm doing an event, it'll be sold out and all of that. What is the driving force now for the next 10 years? I mean, what's. What, what. What makes you light up every day, every week to say you've done your courses, you've done launches, you've done so much, and now what. What's. What's next?
So that's such a great question, because when I left my corporate job to start my own online business, my driving force was I didn't want to have a boss. I wanted to call the shots. I wanted my own freedom. I wanted my own time back. So that's what got me through many, many years of doing this. But once I started making a lot of money, once my platform was so big, that changed. And what it is now, my driving force now is helping female entrepreneurs grow their business so they too can have the freedom. There is a glass ceiling for how much women can make in the corporate world, and there's definitely a gl ceiling when it comes to race as well, even more so. And so I want women to be able to make as much money and make the biggest impact that they want on their terms, how they want to do it. And I am obsessed with that. I think about it all the time. So I'm on a mission to create freed, help create freedom for as many women entrepreneurs as possible. And that gets me up every single morning out of bed.
That is fantastic because it has, it had, it had to be something bigger than yourself for you to be able to be doing so many things in different parts of the world. And courses and podcasts and all of that. Okay, so a couple of more things. Podcast, video, text, blogging. Just one or all of them?
Just one. So I'm all about. Okay, so let me preface that. When it comes to your weekly content, every week, just choose one. Is it going to be a blog or is it going to be a podcast or. Or is it going to be a video show? Just choose one. Stay with it every single week. But then on top of that, I think video just in general is important. Whether it be you're jumping on IG stories or you're making a video and Putting it on LinkedIn, additional video I think is necessary.
Got it. When it comes to, you know, a Facebook community, many, many of our earlier guests on the Internet, members of the World Family School said they've been able to monetize Facebook group to the extent of $800,000 in one year. Not by just selling courses inside, but they said because of that group, they announced an event and they went for sold out from people there. So various users of a Facebook group. What do you think about Facebook groups?
Love them. Absolutely love them. I have several free and paid. And my Facebook groups, they're paid in the sense of if you join one of my courses, you get invited into a private Facebook group. So I have several and they're definitely the backbone of the business. Second to our email list.
So you can create a Facebook group, nurture your community, talk to them, create videos, help them with their questions, and then eventually start offering your course or online consulting within and just have that as a business.
Yes, except that that Facebook group, I think one of the main things you need to do in there, engage, create relationships, add value, is to grow your email list because the marketing is going to be more powerful if you email them versus just posting something new in the group. You want to do both. So if you're going to have an email list, make sure those people, you give them an offer to join your email list as well, with a lead magnet.
Got it. So I like when you said that number thousand comes back to me because it's, it's achievable in the very short term. And when you said $6,000 or 1,000 people email, I'm just hoping that because Most North American families can live very comfortably with that $6,000 income and a thousand people building that. I'm just tracing back to everything you said. Be genuine and honest yourself. Tell people what you love and talk about that. Talk about that more on video. Create a lead magnet. That lead magnet should not be about. It should be about how they will feel or how their life will change. Like, your dog will stop barking and you'll have a. You know, because remember, remember Raya, dude used to be like that. Used to walk all over the place. So, yeah. So I completely got that example. Do that and create a Facebook community. And from there, too, after adding value, bring people back into the. So the central message is add value everywhere. Help people. Go from point A to point B. Build that thousand people email list, which is, you know, maybe take you a couple of months at best.
Right.
And so you built not only just a list, a list of nurtured human beings who love your message and therefore they've chosen not to unsubscribe. And eventually you said, just by doing one live where you're helping them, 197 people were able to. $197 and you were able to. $6,000 is possible. Obviously, you're a big brand. People love you like crazy. I mean, we know a lot of brands. We love working with personal brands. We've seen some personal branding stuff happening for all three of us as well. But, Amy, you do know you are special. You're truly loved by your audience. Most. You know, if there was a. I don't like to say measure everything, but you do know that, you know, 11 years, and we learn a lot from that. Raya and I witnessed that at that event. And the one thing that I went away after doing marketing for 11 years from that event was I have to care more if this doesn't happen. If you don't care. That was not my.
Yeah, yes, totally agree.
So, so you, You. You. You told everybody how that happened, and then you can make a $6,000 income. Just got two more questions before we run out of time is people are scared today. People are worried. People feel there's no light at the end of the tunnel. A lot of people have to. I unfortunately know a lot of people in. In Canada who, like, you know, do you know somebody who'll buy my house? And all of those things are coming about signs on their cards and all of that. And I keep telling them, I say, you know what? It's not magic, but it's not anything less than magic. This digital marketing this Internet thing, you know, with your affiliate marketing, with how Raya and I and the kids in January we all went to Disneyland and we came back and Raya's like, how much did you spend on each ticket? I said, $550 for each Disney pass for three parks. And she's like, I want to pay you back. I said, you really want to pay me back? She said, yes. She said, I'll get a summer job. I said, you won't be able to pay back with a summer job. She said, tell me how to pay you back. And I said, why don't you start a channel? And. And I keep telling them, I say, you know what? This is not magic. But it's not anything less than talk about how. Because Raya and I did all the research to find which tickets and all of that. So I said, create a channel on how to find the cheapest ticket and put an affiliate link. Disney apparently gives magic, this digital marketing, this Internet thing, you know, with your affiliate marketing, with how Raya and I and the kids in January we all went to Disneyland and we came back and Raya's like, how much did you spend on each ticket? I said, $550 for each Disney pass for three parks. And she's like, 35%. You sell a couple of tickets and you're done. And unfortunately, then Covid happened. But if these kind of opportunities are available, the biggest message that we want to give to everybody watching now and later is that all of these things can be done while the daddy is home, while the mother is home, while the children are, you know, I want to pay you back. I said, you really want to pay me back? She said, yes. She said, I'll get a summer job. I said, you won't be able to pay back with a summer job. She said, tell me how to pay you back. And I said, why don't you start a channel and talk about how. Because Raya and Abhiana did all the research to find which tickets and all of that. So I said, create a channel on how to find the cheapest ticket, put an affiliate link Disney apparently gives and be together. Like I said, Me personally, 10 years of back and forth travel. I have a company to show for it. I had a full company to show for it. Now maybe half of it. And I don't worry about that much. But the time that I want to spend with these two girls and my wife and the six dogs who are, most of them are under their feet watching, listening to this, to say that, you know, all of this is possible with digital. So Amy, you've been through online courses. Email marketing is affiliate 35%. You sell a couple of tickets and you're done. And unfortunately then Covid happened. But if these kind of opportunities are available, the biggest message that we want to give to everybody watching now and later is that all of these things can be done while the daddy is home, while the mother is home, while the children are, you know, you've done everything right.
Yeah, I have. I love affiliate marketing. So I do affiliate marketing in a few different ways. One, I'll market somebody else's digital course and so I do that a few times a year and I love doing that because I'll take somebody else's course, I'll get results with it and then I'll talk about the results that I.
Got until the other tell and be together. Like I said, Me personally, 10 years of back and forth travel, I have a company to show for it.
I had other people to buy it as well. So that's my favorite way to do affiliate marketing. But I also market other people's tools software. So I'm not going to create any software.
So full company to show for it now, maybe half of it. And I don't worry about that much.
But why don't I tell other people about all the software I use for my business? We make a lot of money by promoting other people's courses or other people's software. The key is you want to get results with it or you want to fall in love with it so you could talk about it organically and naturally. So people are like, whoa, that sounds great. I want that too.
Time that I want to spend with these two girls and my wife and the six dogs who are, most of them are under their feet watching, listening to this to say that, you know, all of this is possible, possible with digital. So Amy, you've been through online courses. Email marketing is affiliate.
So affiliate marketing is a great way to make some money in your business.
And if you haven't, you've done everything right.
Yeah, I have. I love affiliate market email list. You can email and say, hey, check out this product. I love it. You should try it too. And you link to the product and you can make money.
Excellent. Last two questions for the audience listening. Where can they find you? What is the best marketing?
So I do affiliate marketing in a few different ways. One, I'll market somebody else's digital course and so I do that a few times a year and I love doing.
That because I'll take your Facebook group, whatever. How can they get more in touch with you? Because I'm sure this is never going to be enough for the people watching.
Well, thank you so much for asking. I have so many free trainings on my podcast. Somebody else's course. I'll get results with it and then I'll talk about the results that I got and told other tell. So it's called Online Marketing made Easy with Amy Porterfield. And I talk about list building and course creation and online marketing. That would be the perfect place to find me.
Awesome.
Other people to buy it as well. So that's my favorite way to do affiliate marketing. But I also market other people's tools software. So I'm not going to create any software. So why don't I tell other people about all the software I use for my business?
We make a lot and when it comes to is, you know, like you built a family of friends like Raya said ecosystem and how important is it for the people watching to build? Like if they're getting into digital marketing for the first time and want to be, you know, the Amy Porterfields of the, you know, of the next few years or in a lot of money.
By promoting other people's courses or other people's software. The key is you want to get results with it or you want to fall in love with it. So you could talk about it organically and naturally. So people are like, whoa, that sounds great. I want that too a few years.
How should they build their ecosystem? Like get into a mastermind like you said?
Yes.
I love the idea of getting into a mastermind. There's free ones or paid ones. I also love the idea of educating yourself. So buying digital courses, getting a part of your program, learning all you can learn. And so affiliate marketing is a great way to make some money in your business. And if you have an email list, you can email and say, hey, check out this product. I love it. You should try it too. And you link to the product and you can make money.
Excellent.
Get engaged in the communities. And so like for me, I sell a program to teach people how to create digital courses. I have a Facebook group for those people in the course.
If two questions for the audience listening. Where can they find you? What is the best if you get.
In that Facebook group, you meet other people doing the things you're doing and you can build connections and other affiliate deals with people. So get into community. And I think one of the best.
Ways your Facebook group, whatever. How can they get more in touch with you? Because I'm Sure. This is never going to be enough.
For them to do so is through education and find that community there.
Got it. Perfect. This brings us to the end of today. Amy, thank you so much from the bottom of our heart. And you know, saying thank you comes naturally to all of us. But you know, but I mean it because like I said, these have been trying times, people watching.
Well, thank you so much for asking. I have so many free trainings on my podcast, so it's called Online Marketing Made Easy with Amy Porterfield. And I talk about list building and course creation and online marketing. That would be the perfect place to find me.
Awesome. Last time when I set up a company, I never thought we'd go through another build up process. But this time I've got, I think I've got, I had no co founders. This time I've got awesome co founders.
Yes, you do.
And lots of support from everybody that we've reached out to. So this is really special. And when it comes to is, you know, like you built a family for us. Raya wants to get off, go off in a few years, finish her universe, finish her university. Raya, don't forget that. Finish her university and go to become, go to Hollywood or Bollywood. Aviana wants to get into horses and you know, get into horse farm or whatever and. But I said, whatever happens this five years, we're building digital Internet moguls of the world Family school. They will be taking classes based on what they will teach. We'll have other teachers, all of that, it's going to be an online school. We promote it all over the world. And so whatever happens, after five years, wherever these girls go, these moments of me trying to, you know, have my girls fall back in love with me because I traveled so much and forth, they say, they said, we love you, there's no love lost. But I still feel guilty. So this project is a for profit project, but it's a sea of friends, like Raya said, ecosystem. And how important is it for the people watching to build? Like if they're getting into digital marketing for the first time and want to be, you know, the Amy Porterfields of the next few years or in a few years, how should they build their ecosystem? Like get into a mastermind like you said, would that be the right.
Yes.
I love the idea of getting into a mastermind. There's free ones or paid ones. I also love the idea of educating yourself. So buying digital courses, getting a part of your program, learning all you can learn and then get engaged in the communities and so like for me, I sell a program to teach people how to create digital courses. So I really once again wanted to say thank you so much for supporting us.
Thank you so very much for having me. This is such a great project. I'm so excited that you guys are doing this. And I'll tell you, my dad was a firefighter and he had a second job because most firefighters in California do. And I rarely saw him. And so, girls, I just want to say what your dad is doing is the most special thing. And I know you love him dearly, but it makes me want to cry. It's so special. So I appreciate you guys letting me be a part of this special project.
Same time, it's, it's a Daddy Daughter Venture. So I really, once again wanted to.
