How to Create Videos like a Pro and Generate 3x Sales @owenvideo1 | Video Structure for Sales Video

Owen Video breaks down the structure for sales videos that convert, sharing gear recommendations and storytelling techniques. He explains how to grow a YouTube channel and the formula behind videos that drive 3x sales for creators and entrepreneurs.
The shortest distance between two human hearts is always a story.
30 years old, I had been fired 22 times from 21 different companies. One company actually fired me twice. And to be, you know, quite transparent, I deserve to be fired in most of those cases. But, you know, here's the thing. It wasn't that I was a bad employee. It was that I was a great entrepreneur. The formula for success on YouTube is 5 points. G R E A T. You memorize that, you'll never have to write another script again.
Hey, guys, this is Avi Arya, father of two girls, six dogs, husband to a superwoman, a streetcar racer turned hotelier, now social media marketer and founder of Internet Moguls. Welcome to my channel. Nice to have you on the Askavi Arya Show. My name is Avi Arya, father of two girls, six dogs, husband to a superwoman, a streetcar racer, turned hotelier, now social media marketer and founder of Internet Moguls. And as I always say, the shortest distance between two human hearts is always a story. Owen, for the opening of this interview, if you can share your brief story with us.
Yeah, I don't know that anything I do is ever brief. You know, we have a joke in the company that says, no one comes to Owen Video for brevity. And that is largely a fact. But I'll keep it short. In 1989, we only had two presents under the Christmas tree. I grew up in LA, so I was very big into Hollywood culture, but let's face it, we were a poor family. My mom took every opportunity to remind us that we were poor. Anytime we asked for a candy bar, anytime we asked for, you know, can we go on a field trip? You know, it was always like, no, we're poor. No, we're poor. No, we're poor. Now, that being said, my mom always found enough money for her drug habit. And I always found that, you know, a very challenging reality to deal with as a kid. But, you know, my dad offered a great solution in 1989 when under the Christmas tree, there were two presents. There was a Nintendo, the brand new Nintendo Entertainment System, right? Like, we were the first kids. And for the first time in my life, I felt like a rich kid. But there was also another present, a bigger present, and it was a video camera. And it was one of these big honking video cameras that you put the whole VHS cassette tape in it. You know, you take it to the kids. You know, we all kind of had these as kids. You'd film a kid's baseball game or the church talent show. And then you'd never watch that video again. Or every now you send it to America's Funniest Home Videos. Well, I played with the Nintendo for about 15 minutes. I played with the camera for about 15 years, making sketch comedy videos, stop motion, Lego animations, and doing all of these things that would have thrived on YouTube if only YouTube existed. So fast forward to my late 20s and early 30s. I was very lost by this time. By 30 years old, I had been fired 22 times from 21 different companies. One company actually fired me twice. And to be quite transparent, I deserve to be fired in most of those cases because. But, you know, here's the thing. It wasn't that I was a bad employee. It was that I was a great entrepreneur. And no one had ever told me, hey, Owen, you would be a great entrepreneur, or Owen, you're very entrepreneurial. I didn't even know what the word meant until I was 30 years old. And I had just been terminated from a radio station where I was number one in sales and number one in Internet sales on for Internet radio. So imagine being in a situation where you're number one at the company and you still get fired. And I was fired for a personality conflict. And my, you know, I had personality and my boss had none. But here's the thing, here's the situation. It didn't matter. I still got fired. And so I, that was at that point that I was like, look, it was 2008. YouTube was starting to become a thing. We were hearing about cat videos and meme videos and comedians on Facebook. And that's when I decided that I was not designed to work for someone else. Like, if I could be number one and still toss out, then I wasn't going to be safe anywhere. And so I began to make sketch comedy videos for YouTube. And that went extremely well for me. And that turned into a company's hiring me to be their spokesperson for their, for their products. And at the time, it was largely e commerce and marketing videos. And so I sort of put comedy on hold and transitioned into sort of Vanna White. And I was like, you know, would you like to buy this? You know, look at this. And I would do all these like, you know, hand model things and I would sell stun guns and I sold pins and tchotchkes and all these. I sold all sorts of stuff that became really big to where my phone was ringing off the hook. I eventually hired videographers underneath me and I transitioned into coaching where I live today. And I've traveled the world coaching brands and companies and how to use YouTube to grow your business, get more leads, and become the brand you've always wanted to be. I've traveled the world with Peter McKinnon. I've traveled the world with Casey Neistat, Darrell. I've introduced these people on stage. I've had dinner with them multiple times. I've been on helicopter rides with Shonduras from the space station. So I'm deep into that community and I'm excited to be on your show to share some of that experience with you today.
That is fantastic. And I love the fact that you're such a great storyteller because you had me from the time you said that there were two presents under my Christmas tree. And so I visualized those two presents and I visualized that first Nintendo and I've been hooked to the story ever since. So thank you for being such a great storyteller and while leading by example and telling the audience which will be watching this show to say, this is how you start a story, show people where you were in their minds. If you don't tell them it was under a Christmas tree, they could put it under any tree. Right. So you have to tell them how it was. Great.
Exactly right.
Owen. I see that. You know, the first thing I'd like to talk about is gear. You know, like, and before I talk about gear is like, does everybody have to be good looking like you to start a YouTube channel?
Or, you know, I appreciate you saying that. And if I appear good looking to you, I want to compliment the maker of your glasses because I think it's blurred me just perfectly. It's just perfectly. You know, the truth of the matter is, is that, you know, the. Because I appreciate your comment and I have confidence in my physical appearance. That being said, I don't think you need my charisma, my looks, if you will, or my energy to be successful on camera. I think that in my industry it works and I think it works better than being, you know, hello everybody and welcome to YouTube. I don't think that that would play well. So I do think that if you want to teach something that's exciting, I think you need to boost your excitement level up. And this is what we call like an on camera presence. It's okay to be very mellow in your day to day life, but then when you're on camera, maybe turn it up a notch. Not ten notches like me, just a notch. I think that'll help you. That being said, if you're in quilting no one's really interested in anything other than quilting. So be a good quilting teacher, right? That's what you need to be. Whether that's mellow or high key. If you are teaching programming on a computer or Python, right, Or these different, you know, softwares or, you know, backbones, then be who you are. But. Right, but be the best version of yourself. You know, Growing up, I was always made fun of for who I am. You know, they. In Japan, they say the crooked nail gets hammered or the nail that stands out gets hammered. And this was very true, right? Like, I was always, oh, when you're loud, oh, and you're conceited, you know, and loud and brash was always sort of, like, mistaken for conceited. Granted, I have a bit of an ego as well, but people said these things to me all the time, and it really, like, battered me down. And it's like, dude, I'm just kind of, like, being me. Like, this is who I am, though. You know what I mean? And there are people of, like, you know, sexuality. Let's just take, like, if you were gay in high school, like, no, maybe in older days, but no one's ever like, hey, dude, stop being so gay. You know what I mean? Like, that. You'd be. You'd be put in jail for that these days, you know? And yet if you're loud and you're. And you're sort of like. Like in. Dude, can you shut up? Can you stop being yourself? Well, I got to this place where I was trying not to be myself, to make other people like me. And that led me to four years of drugs and alcohol because I was unhappy with this person that they made me be. And after four years of drugs and alcohol, I woke up in a room I didn't recognize with people I didn't respect, and I go, I want out of this lifestyle. By the grace and glory and the majesty of God, I was immediately drug free. I quit cold turkey. Never had an inkling, never went back to it again. Now that's my story. It may not be your story, but I'm grateful for that. What I think was a divine experience. And from that point on, I promised I would never bury my personality again, you know? And so I am who I am. Sometimes I could tone it down to make it more palatable for the audience. And there are. Sometimes I kick it up to bring the audience along on a journey with me. And I think that for anybody creating video, know who you are. To thine own self be true. Know who you Are and be the best version of that. That self for the audience you're presenting for.
Got it? Lovely. Perfect. That answers it all. Now, when it comes to gear, I love your setup. You know, you got a nice maybe one or two mounted lights on, shining on your face. Just one. One. And you just maybe one inch away from a mic, which makes you sound really good. You have your logo at the back, and I love these lights that you have. So can you. Can you break down your studio setting for us?
Yeah, absolutely. Now, I have what are called video creation stations in my office. It's a vcs, okay? And everybody needs a vcs. You need a video creation station. And I want to start with your desk, okay? So in front of me is my computer. I've got my. You know, my keyboard is right here with. With my mouse. I have a normal computer workstation like anybody else does. But on the other side of my desk here, I have. I actually have like 5ft for the next wall. But all you need is. Is that much space behind your desk to put a tripod with a camera. Okay? So I have a tripod with a camera connected to it that is plugged into my computer. Now, you can use a 4K webcam that plugs into your computer via USB. If you have a couple extra bucks, then you can buy a DSLR camera. And I recommend the Canon M6 that can be plugged into a cam link 4K. And then the cam link 4K gets plugged into your computer. And that is how. And if you. If you get my gear guide, maybe we could put my gear guide in the. In a link somewhere. I have a list of all of this stuff that you just go buy it on Amazon. If you guys didn't understand it, just Google it. Like, get a Canon M6, get in 4K, plug it into your computer, Mac or PC. It'll work just fine. So that's. That's sort of your camera setup. And that'll give you a nice clear picture, right? But it won't give you any sound. Now you need sound, okay? So again, to buy sound, to get sound, I would recommend. Can you. Babe, can you hand me that. That microphone? Just unplug it from your. From your thing, you know, to get great sound. I would recommend the ATR 2100 microphone. Now, that is this microphone right here for those of you guys watching on video, okay? And it's a regular microphone. And in the back here, you've got an XLR adapter and a USB adapter so you can plug it into A soundboard. But you can also plug it into your computer directly. So you get an ATR 2100 mic, you plug it into your computer, and bam, you now have a great picture and great sound. If you would like to. If you want to be a nerd like me, then you can get yourself an alesis Multi Mix 4. It's a $99 mixer that plugs directly into your computer. But then you can plug your microphone in using the XLR cable. And that gives you the ability to increase the quality of your microphone. So the microphone that I'm using Now is a $300 mic. Again, you don't need a $300 Mark Mike. But if you got the money, like, and it's like flippant to you, like, yeah, I got the money, then buy it, right? Get a better mic. But I'm able to use the mic cord and not a usb, which gives me the ability to add sound effects and do all sorts of stuff. Okay. So now I have great sound. The last thing you need is a light. And I recommend the Neewer. It's N E W E E R. Right. Is the brand newer lights. They're the most affordable on Amazon, but they're also, I think, of a great quality. You could buy better lights. You will get the same exact quality light. You might get a different grade aluminum, you know, but no kids are allowed in here. There's no food allowed in here. Except when I'm hungry. I can do whatever I want, my studio, but I don't need all the upgrades. Right. Like, great looking light. It's very affordable. I actually have three of them in this studio. One on this station, one on that station, and then a third for my Amazon Alexa channel. That is more of a. It's a smaller version, but it's the same. Same brand. So again, to review, you need a camera, you need a mic, and you need a light. Anything other than those things like a sound mixer or a cam link, it's all icing on the cake. Right? Camera, light, mic, computer. And you have a video creation station at your desk, which means anytime you get a great email or anytime you have a great idea, you can press record on your Zoom or on Loom or on Camtasia or whatever you're using and record a video that you can now get out to your audience and generate leads and close sales.
Lovely. Can you also talk to us about the great lights that you have, the purple light everywhere and also.
Oh, good. Okay, thank you. I forget about those. Yeah. So these are called PAR lights. And you could probably, if you're on camera, you could see that par light down there. They are very affordable, extremely affordable. I got eight lights for like 40 bucks, right? Thank you, Beijing. But here's the thing. They work great. So if you want to add some color and some context. For example, without these lights, my studio kind of sucks. Let me give you an example. Alexa Studio off. Without lights, I'm pretty much worthless. Alexa Studio on. Now, as I come back on, of course, I've got that thing I'll pull off right now. Now as I come back on, right, I'm coming back into full mode. And it. And it looks amazing. So, you know, having the right setup can really make a big difference. And these par lights, they can change color. They can do every color but white. So I can't do white or yellow here. You know what I mean? I can only do blue, pink, purple, green. But they operate by remote.
The idea is to show depth.
Well, yes, yes, I want depth, but that's accomplished with my camera lens. What I want back here is I want to look like a video expert. And with the lights kind of lighting up blue and purple and then the TV in the background, you can actually see the reflection on my white's life a little bit. Then it gives you more of that, oh, this guy's techie. So if I had a woodworking channel, this would not be a good set.
Understood.
Right. Like, you want the set to reflect your brand. So if you're a quilter, and I use that to quilting to kind of like if you're in a hobby channel or a hobby video, if you're a woodworker, if you're a quilter, even if you're a plumber. My good friend Roger Wakefield is the top producing YouTube plumber. He has a studio that looks like he's a plumber. Right. So you want to reflect a set that creates the reality that you want your viewer to be a part of when they're watching.
Lovely. And the sound boards that you have for absorbing sound on the side, could you talk a little bit about that?
Yeah. So I got these on wish.com they took eight to 12 weeks to get here and they cost me about 45 cents. Right. So you sacrifice sort of getting it now with getting it cheap. And I think you need to know what you should buy cheap and what you should spend some money on. Now if you had a bad echo with trucks on the outside. See, I'm. I'm like 40, 50ft underground. So I'm in a very Quiet space. I don't need a lot of sound protection. So these did the job. Plus I ordered them when I was moving, so I knew by the time I got them that they'd be here right on time. Now you can get soundboard on Amazon, okay. Or sound foam. You'll pay a lot more, you'll get a lot less, you'll get it quicker, right? And it's this balance, right? So if you're in a place where like, you like this design. And by the way, these are 12 by 12 squares, so one foot. And you know, you don't have to do it like every other. You could, you could stagger the design and do some different things with it. I really like these.
Sorry. In between every 12 by 12 is what? It's just the wall.
They're hot glued directly on the wall. And you know what? That's a hack. Like, everybody permanently attaches these things. With hot glue, they will stick indefinitely. But with a little plastic paint scraper, I can get them off the wall with no damage to the paint, no damage to the foam. So I can reapply them anywhere else in the house or anywhere else in the studio. Okay? So beware. And even the tv, the TV is on a stand, so I can move it anywhere. If I do a workshop, I can bring this in the car, right? I can. You want to have a modular set, meaning that I try to avoid permanently attaching anything to the wall so that I can always be moving around and making changes as necessary.
Got it. What would you. So I love that. So we spoke about the mic, we spoke about the audio, lighting, camera, the lights from Amazon. And what I particularly liked was that you gave two options for everything if you wanted now versus how, where you save money. The SLR for the mic, everything. You gave two options for everybody who's listening. You. You do not need a fancy setup just to get started if you wanted to. But it should not cripple your action taking capability to say 100%.
Agree.
Lovely.
Start now, start now with like a, like a 4K webcam. You know, I don't know how to use DSLRs. Okay, let's just put it out there. My name is Owen Video and I don't know how to use cameras. Okay. I don't know what an aperture is, I don't know what an ISO is. And there's YouTubers listening that are snickering. What an idiot. What an idiot. Yeah, let's compare subscribers and watch time, you know what I mean? Because I've been able to build a huge YouTube channel that generates multiple six figures in business every year with a webcam. Now, now I use a nicer cam because I've learned a thing or two. But even this, I hired a guy to come in and help me set it up because I'm not a pro, right? So you guys need to get started. Look, let's say that I'm online and I'm looking up how to build a website. And I find your video called how to build a website for Beginners. Step by step. I don't care what camera quality you use. I don't care. I want you to teach me how to build a website in 10 minutes or less. You know what I mean? Even if it's just part one. So focus on great content. And then as your content starts developing sales, reinvest a portion into your equipment to increase your look and reinvent yourself. I do think reinvention and staying fresh is important, but staying fresh only matters if you've been. If you've been able to stay. So make great content and after a year, maybe look at upgrading some of that gear.
Got it. Lovely. So you spoke about growing a YouTube channel and you've done this on TikTok and multiple channels, which means that you know how to talk to the audience and you know how it works. If it was just a one off, it could have been one channel, but maybe you could not have replicated the same on TikTok. So there. So is there a formula for people who are watching getting started or getting restarted, being motivated by this video? Is there a formula of sorts?
Yeah, there absolutely is. And we, we have this formula available on our website. Just go to owenvideo.com G R E A T video. Right. So owenvideo.com greatvide and you guys can download it and you can use it for free. In fact, I actually recommend you print it out and tape it onto your camera or tape it onto your back wall. But look, there's a lot of different formulas that work. And let's talk about those. You know, when you turn on Netflix, you know, what you see is a collection of comedy drama movies. 45 minute series is three hour movies like the Lord of the Rings, 22 minute sitcoms, and I love sitcoms. Okay. All of these have a different formula or a different structure. Okay. When I was diagnosed with cancer five years ago.
Wow.
I was in the middle of my business and I was devastated by the news, obviously, and I had to enter into some very aggressive chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Now, sitting on the couch Eating watermelon and Gatorade, right? Filling my body back up with nutrients, which by the way, I've learned now is like the absolute worst things you could do while you're battling cancer. I began to watch. Yeah, sugar, exactly. I began to watch as many YouTube videos as I could possibly absorb. And I wanted to learn the formula. And what I found is that every successful YouTube video, right, sitcoms have a formula. Three hour movies, adventure movies have a formula. Two hour romances have another formula. Okay? The formula for success on YouTube is 5 points. G R E A T. You memorize that, you'll never have to write another script again. You memorize the great video formula and you'll never struggle to know what to say on camera. So G stands for grab attention. Five years ago when I had cancer is in an attention grabbing statement. In 1989, we had two big presents. Under the Christmas tree is an attention grabbing statement. Today I'm going to show you how to make a WordPress website. From beginning to end is a great attention grabbing statement. So as you begin to do a video, you need to think, what statement am I going to make that grabs the viewer's attention and convinces them to sort of put the remote down and watch the video a little bit longer. Okay? So that's G. R means relate to the viewer. And you relate to the viewer by introducing yourself, hey, my name is Owen Video. And on this channel we teach YouTube creators like you how to master the platform and become a professional, right? Relating to the viewer includes showing them you know them. So explain that you understand the problem. You know, there's this trend going on right now that's like, you know, show me that you're from India without saying you're from India, right? Show me you're an entrepreneur without telling me you're an entrepreneur. You got to show them you know them. And so you do that by expressing problems, right? You say, hey, look, if you're anything like me, you want to have a website, you want to have lead flow, but you don't know the first thing about programming, designing or anything, right? I'm showing them that I understand their problem without saying, hey, I understand your problem, right? You're, you're, you want the viewer in the R section to go, yeah, that's me. Yeah, that's me. Which further gets them to lower the remote again. Again, it's all about lowering the remote and getting them to just plant on your channel, okay? The E section is the bulk of your video. And this is. Explain your solution. And I didn't say the solution or a solution. I said your solution. If you don't frame your solution as unique to you, then there's no reason to continue watching your video, right? So it's not let me show you the seven steps to building a WordPress website. It's let me show you my secret seven steps to getting a WordPress website done fast. Right? You guys understand when I'm using WordPress as an example, I don't really teach that on my channel. Maybe it's quilting, maybe it's fishing, maybe it's whatever. But, you know, but just by adding my secret sauce or my secret recipe, you know, can be really helpful. So your E section is the bulk of your video and it should never exceed five bullet points, right? Five bullet points at a minute. Each is a five minute video. And you got to be pretty good to keep attention for five minutes. Okay? So you know, your E section is the biggest section. The G and the R should take less than 45 seconds. Okay? After E comes a actual proof. You gotta prove to them that this has worked for somebody, right? Hey, take a look at the other websites I've built following this system. Boom, boom, boom. Hey, don't just take my word for it. For those of us that grew up in the US under Reading Rainbow with LeVar Burton, you know, LeVar Burton used to say, hey, don't just take my word for it. And then he would have kids, young kids promote these elementary school books. So leave room for testimonials or stories. Right? Hey, and if you're out there wondering, does this really work? Let me share with you a quilt made by Jane, who's a brand new quilter. Isn't that beautiful? You know, that sort of thing. You're providing proof that people actually listen to you. And then finally, t, the last step in the system is tell them what to do next. And I know that so many of us entrepreneurs want to say, go download my guide. Go download my guide. And there's room for that. But until you've built an audience, you know, you want to sort of avoid that. So in the Beginning, your first 10 to 12 videos, you should be advising the audience to watch another video and creating binge watchable moments. You haven't earned the right to drive traffic yet. Okay, so you have to kind of like pause being a marketer and start being a human. Be a human for 12 videos and then start being a marketer for the next 12. Right. And then go back to being a human again. Right. So you've got a Mix of videos. Like some of them are like, watch this video next. Binge watch, that's key. But then after you've built a little bit of an audience, you got 300 people watching now and it's getting bigger. And now it's like, hey, go download my guide. Go download my guide. Go download my guide. And that's perfectly okay. I think what a lot of us do is we jump right into download my guide and then wonder why our channel's not working. Well, it's because you're selling way too fast. Like, let's back off a little bit, you know, and just enjoy the audience for a moment before you start bringing them in there. So grab attention, relate to the viewer, explain your solution, provide actual proof and then tell them what to do next.
Lovely. I love that, how you got it down pat. And so definitely we're going to put up the links to ovenvideo.com greatvideo and everything that you said, even for the gear, all those links. Yeah. Now the next question would be, we spoke about gear. We spoke about how to get started. We spoke about camera confidence and being you. Now the next thing is frequency. Like, you know, like I. You know what, Owen, after listening to you, I'm like, oh my God, I wish I had started earlier. Should I now start doing one every day from tomorrow and burn out or stick to once a week? Or is there a formula for that?
You know, it's kind of like what works for you. You know, I was sort of batch producing for a long time and that's, I think, really important. So batch producing kind of works where you film a bunch of videos at once. And we actually got to a point where we filmed 17 videos in a day and then we wouldn't film any for a whole quarter. Right. While the 17 were being released on YouTube, we were writing the next batch. So it was one big filming day, Right. Followed by. And we always had an editor sort of outsource these. So that's what batch production works like it looks like and what we recommend to our clients because our clients are business owners and entrepreneurs. Right. Our clients are really not. You know, I bring up quilting because I've helped a few quilting stores, you know, but they're not hobby quilters. They already make six figures doing quilt stuff. Right. So my clients are busy and typically don't have time to become a full time YouTuber. Right. Like, it's not about virality, it's about will this generate more and more leads for me? And so we recommend sort of A batch production model where you, you break the month into four weeks, right? And it's week one is you write out the videos, Week two, you film the videos. Week three, you edit the videos and week four, you upload the videos, right? Okay. Now when you upload them, you don't publish all four, right? You, you schedule them a week out so that the next month, every week, you have a video going out and your audience feels like you're producing one video a week consistently. YouTube really loves that. YouTube loves to see consistency more than volume. They like consistency, right? Because they can. YouTube can trust sending people to your channel because you'll be making new videos for them. So that's what batch production could look like. We also recommend outsourcing your editing, right? Every business owner should be outsourcing to Video Husky and we'll provide a link for that as well. But the other part of that is producing on a regular weekly basis. Now this is the opposite of batch production. This is what we would call like workflow, right? Or one off where you're doing it sort of once a week. And maybe that looks like this where like Mondays from 2 to 4, you film a video, you edit the video, you upload the video, you do it all in two hours. Now think about it. One five to seven minute video shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes, right? It should not take you an hour to film a five minute video, right? So let's say that you've got a half an hour to film the video, another half an hour to quickly edit the bad stuff out. That's it. That's all you need to do. You don't need, you don't need all that crap. In fact, please don't, right? Because what I see a lot of you guys doing is going and buying these graphic packs that are $60. And your videos look the same as everyone else's because everyone's buying that graphic package. So I would avoid that. We actually recommend the video branding elements. This is something that our company makes where we take your logo and your colors and we make overlays that are branded to you. So you, you look completely unique to you. There's room for that in your videos. But your editing should be like, cut out the bad stuff, export it and go, right? So, and then you do that every, every Monday. And so every Monday it's a new video. Every Monday it's a new video. Every Monday it's a new video. Sometimes it might be, you know, you film and edit on Monday and then you upload On Wednesday. Fine. You know, it's still the same thing doing one off videos. I've got a client in Tucson, Arizona that works better for him than batch production does. Right. I've got other clients where batch production is the best way to go. So you gotta find your workflow and then just commit to it. You know, the worst, the worst thing that you could do is say, I'm going to do X and then you just don't do it or you do it twice and then you fall off, you know, you're gonna, you're gonna fall off, fall off the horse, get back on again, you know, Never allow yourself more weeks off than you had on. So here's what I mean. Let's say you had two good weeks of filming and then you skipped a week. Never. One week is acceptable. But never skip a second week because now you film two weeks and you missed two weeks, it's more likely you'll miss the next week. Now, you know, I was a wrestler in high school. I did high school wrestling, you know, and we had a rule is never let the same guy beat you twice.
Nice.
You know, so. So never let the same week beat you twice. You know what I mean? Like you missed a week. Sucks. Just get back on it, you know, even if you only do an increment, you're. You're building that muscle and if you can keep that up for 90 days, you'll find that the muscle will be with you. Just like going to the gym.
Lovely. So that was a fantastic take on frequency, both kinds of models, your own workflow, do it as you please, but don't fall off the wagon for more time off than you've had on. Or you could have the batching model and I love the batching model myself. Every Friday I like to do my videos, send it to my team and you know, I tell my wife sometimes jokingly, if I die, nobody's going to know for the next 60 days because I'm auto scheduled to be everywhere.
That's good. That's really good.
Yeah. So I like that. So you know, next. So when it comes to somebody saying, you know what? I like how Owen, you know, brings a reality TV version to his videos with his family and everything. But hang on, Owen also has a side, but he's got a studio setting and he talks about how to videos because YouTube is more of a search engine and people want how to videos. So should I do a how to tutorial on how what I'm good at and then sell my phone, T shirt, hat, or whatever's in my store or should I do a reality TV version and become a brand and, you know, then have brand deals coming to me? I'm confused. Let's just put this.
Yeah, that's really, that's a really great question. And I will, I will offer a counter perspective. Only 10% of YouTube is search, okay? So we think of it as a search engine because most of my colleagues, who I love and respect dearly, you know, promote YouTube as a search engine. But that's only one wheel of the car, okay? And if you focus on search only, what you're doing is you're becoming an encyclopedia. You're becoming Dictionary.com and I'm gonna ask your listeners how many of you use Dictionary.com on a regular basis? Not very many. Right. Like we look up a word when we need it. As soon as we read it, we leave it. Right. And if you make videos that are entirely based on search, let's say you're a plumber and you make a video called how to fix a leaky bathroom sink, then you're going to get people that Google how to fix a leaky broken sink. They look at your video, they skip to the part they need, and as soon as they got it, they leave. No subscribing, no commenting, no liking. And then they go tell all of their friends that they fix that bathroom link, link, leak. By themselves.
Yes.
Right. They don't even bring you up. So a well rounded business channel should have a search engine strategy, but you also need to have a suggested video strategy. And 90% of YouTube views come from a suggested strategy. You know, I was speaking with one of my good friends who's a public speaker, and I asked him why he hasn't joined my program and he said, because I don't want to do search engine videos. He says, I don't want to do videos that, where Google is telling me what I should make, I want to make videos that, that, that emphasize my own expertise. And I said, oh, well, you know, that's exactly what you need to do, is start a, is build off the suggested algorithm. So our clients, we help you create what's called a silo strategy. Okay? It's a multifaceted, binge watchable approach where some of your videos are designed to get search traffic, some of your videos are designed to be suggested. And the whole idea is somebody finds your channel because they searched for it. But now after that video, another video pops up that's more interesting or it demonstrates your unique capabilities. Right? Or the next time they log in, they see an interesting video that you've made. That is how you make it big on YouTube. Now, a lot of the YouTube educators will teach only search engine optimization because it's easy to bring on a client from Cincinnati and say, oh, let's pick out a keyword. How about how to buy a house for under $200,000 in a small neighborhood in Cincinnati? Oh, I made a video and I rank for that keyword. I. I'm number one. Great. How many people are searching for that? Seven. Two. And so what happens is there's this false flag of being able to say, oh, you rank for this video, or you rank for this keyword term, but nobody's actually searching for that keyword term. So that's an easy way to fake wins. We don't. I don't want that. I want real growth.
So.
So the idea is that while you're trying to rank for big keywords, it'll take you a while. You're making suggested videos and sales videos and ad videos and nurture videos that are growing your business on the side, right? So we got a client right now, Rich Sparks, real estate agent in Michigan, made a video using this strategy, what, four months ago, and it did. Well, it was actually his best video. Right? But at the time, it was his best video. Now it's. It's double spiked, which means he got a huge spike because it finally ranked on the search engine. And then the spike went down. And then two weeks later, it went up again and the spike went even higher. Now, we don't know why. There's obviously a trend in Michigan happening, right? But we're trying to find out why. In the meantime, who cares, right? It took two months for that video to really take off, and then it took off again, right? So you got to know, like, what seeds you're nurturing and what seeds you're harvesting.
Nice. I've never, ever heard of somebody going anti search engine and saying this. And it made so much sense when you said, and I. And I'm guilty of doing that. I have fixed the. The kitchen so many times myself without giving credit where it was due.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, totally.
That was a fantastic example because I was like, like you said, tell people it's you without telling them it's you. So that was like, oh, that's me. And so love that.
And I'm not. I'm not anti search, but. But what I am is it's should you don't put all your bass. Your eggs in search. Look, that's what I did. I'm speaking from pure experience. I built an entire channel based on how to and what is. And the problem with that. And I developed some subscribers, right? Like, people do subscribe and they do watch. Like, not everybody logs in and logs out, but the majority log in and log out. Okay? So what happened was after a couple of years, I'm watching my friends and their channels take off while mine is stagnating. Why? Because I built a whole channel on how to's, how to do Snapchat, how to do SEO, and these things that were no longer popular, right? And so I found myself in exactly the situation that my friend didn't want to be in, where in order for me to stay on top of the search engine or on top of YouTube, I had to make videos for people who, at the end of the day, didn't appreciate me, my personality, my unique experience. And so we began to change our model. And since changing that model, my business has doubled. The channel growth has exploded, but it didn't come overnight. You see, I could tell you to rank for some random keyword, and you'll rank tomorrow morning, and then you'll be like, wow, Owen, great testimonial. And you'll tell all your friends, right? But here's the thing, is that in a week, you're gonna get knocked off. Or, you know, in a week, you're only gonna have seven views. So I want my clients and the people that join the video marketingschool.com to get real results and have real answers. You know, like, I was diagnosed with cancer five years ago, and can you imagine if my doctor was like, hey, take this pill and you're gonna be cured tomorrow?
Right?
That would be a lie. But, wow, what a great lie. Like, that's the lie I want to hear, right? I think a lot of times we hear the lie we want to hear, right? Like, wow, if I join this program that's really cheap, you know, I'll rank tomorrow. Oh, this Guy's a big YouTuber. He wouldn't lie. He's a great guy, great gal. The reality is that none of these people built their channels on search. They built it on suggested video views with search built in. But they don't want to teach you suggested. Why? Because it's hard. Because you got to learn format. You got to learn structure. You know, you need more than just 49 bucks, right? So we want to teach you what works. That's why we offer a lifetime membership while everyone offers month to month. And we offer month to month. You can do that. But we also offer lifetime so you could pay one fee and be a part of us forever because we know it's going to be. It might be four months before you get that first viral hit, but we want to help you through the four months. And then when you go viral, then we want to help you maximize that and do it again.
Perfect. So when you, when you say search video, I really like this. But to break it down for people who are listening to this for the first time and I taken abacks where honestly I am a little bit as well. But I, you know, I totally agree and I want to go deeper into this. Do you go to how do like, do you rely on a Vid IQ.
Or a TubeBuddy to be able to go to 100%? Get TubeBuddy now dot com. Get TubeBuddyNow.com and TubeBuddy is my favorite tool. Now, there are other tools that have great features, but the tubebuddy community, right? Like how many of you guys have ever bought a tool? Like, I've got a Dremel. I don't even know if you know what a Dremel is, right? It's like, it's, it's like a, it helps make holes in wood and stuff. Like, it's like kind of like a drill, but it's not really a drill. Look, I bought a Dremel. I have no idea how to use it. I, you know, it was an as seen on TV Dremel. And I'm like, I'm going to buy this thing. I have no idea how to use the damn tool. Okay, how many of you guys ever bought a tool but you realize you don't really know how to use it, right? That's, that's where I love Tubebuddy. Because Tubebuddy, the community will show you how to use the tool. And we have a bunch of trainings on Tubebuddy. Tubebuddy has an amazing keyword explorer. Okay, first of all, so you can find great keywords now. Oh, and I thought you were anti keyword. No, no, no, no, no. Keywords fit into their place. But keywords are not the golden calf. You see, okay? It's not everything. It's part of the story. But they will also show you thumbnails and other videos that other people make that will help you understand the best kind of content for your company. See, and I think that's really important. Tubebuddy has an ab split test tool. So you can test your titles, you can test your thumbnails. Tubebuddy has what's that other the click magnet feature which I really love, which will show you which videos can be re optimized and get new life. And believe me folks, I've got videos surging right now that were popular three years ago, but they're surging again right now. Don't know why, but I'll go in my analytics and find out. Right. Tubebuddy just tells me, hey, this video is popping change thumbnail or whatever. So yes, I use Tubebuddy, I use tools. Knowing when to use them, how to use them, I think is important. And we have a whole bunch of training on that inside the video marketing school.com. so if you do get to buddy and I do recommend it, you know, join the Video Marketing School and take a look at how to use it so that you actually know how to use it. You're not just paying for this thing that's sitting there.
Lovely, lovely. I love that. So now, Owen, you're talking about, you know, I see that you have a subscription membership where we can go month to month and you also have something. Can you talk about that to us?

It's just social confidence in what you're doing is amazing. So I'm going to link up your school and, you know, everything. I'm going to take the distance.
Thank you so much.
And so I also wanted to ask you. We've got about four minutes. I wanted to ask you something very interesting. So I am a planner. You know, I can plan to create and you know, the Lord above has been kind and I've been able to create multi million dollar companies again and again and again just because of planning. You asked me to do everything on my own. I fail and I, you know, and I'm 44 years old and I'm very happy understanding what I can do and what I need others to do. And I'm just reading this book from Dan Sullivan who reiterates the fact, which is it's who not how, it's who you hired to do what you do and it's not how. You don't need to do know every how. So I'm very comfortable with that. So I see a lot of. And I've got to say about. I'm always touching 20,000. I was one of the first people in the country to start a YouTube channel and I'm only at 20,000 because I was not consistent.
Good for you. That's great. Yeah, that's great though.
I want to grow that channel and I've always thought so what I how I grow that channel is I always look for questions that are pressing the industry, my community.
Yeah.
Coming in and all of that. And I bring in guests like yourselves. So it's the lazy way of growing a channel. Maybe I don't do it myself. I bring the experts. I've got the best person to talk about video. How. I mean, why should my channel not pop? I got. We spoke to Gary Vee, we spoke to Grant Cardone, we spoke to Pat Flynn, we spoke to Stu McLaren for membership. We speak to the best of the best, and that's how we will have on our channel. That's one way of me being lazy. But I like to be on the channel myself because I love to make these relationships with people like yourselves, Especially when I see people like yourself or Stu or Pat, who have a family at the end, they're talking about. I love to make friends with people who have families.
And therefore, that's a good friend.
So that's one part of doing it. But however, I see a lot of people going, hiring other people to make a video on. You know, like, you send a script to somebody and the person reads the script as an expert or something. So everything is outsourced. You're not. Your face is also not on the channel. And there are some things that people only hand videos and they're trying to fix things. What I'm trying to ask maybe Owen over here is can I completely. Not maybe me, but can people completely outsource everything, production and everything to others and still grow their YouTube channel?
You cannot outsource your greatness. That is a wonderful question, Avi, because I get this a lot from high performance entrepreneurs. And in fact, we got this conversation, this question yesterday where it's like, I want you to write the scripts, I want you to hire the editor, I want you to do the videographer. I want to sit down and read the script. I love that idea, and I believe that it is possible. In fact, that's largely the place that I'm in. But I did not hire a company to do that. I trained a company to do that. I trained my company to do that. And in fact. And if you are that person, if you are the CEO and you want to be in a place where you just sit down and film and then everybody else takes care of it, that is entirely possible for you. Okay? And for that person, I would recommend my YouTube authority intensive, because that's what we teach. And that is more of a private training program where we help you to build your systems. And a great example is that we recommend hiring a VP and not a va. A VA is somebody with multifaceted skills that are usually administrative in nature. What you need is someone who's a video producer who has a variety of skills, but they are video production in general. Okay, so that's. The first part is knowing the roles that you should hire for. But absolutely outsource the editing. Absolutely outsource the uploading and the thumbnails. Right? Absolutely outsource the scripting and the writing. But no, it's not going to happen overnight. Here's what's going to happen. And I've done this a million times. You're going to hire, let's say me, because we do this. You can hire our company to do this. Let's say that you hire our company to write the scripts. You sit down on Tuesday, you're ready to film those scripts, and then you're reading this and you go. You're reading the script and you go, well, I wouldn't say that.
Right, Right.
I wouldn't say this. I don't like this. It's all garbage. This is garbage. Oh, and I quit. I want my money back. Hey, tough potatoes. We don't offer money back. Guarantees on that. Because you know why? You have to be involved. You have to be involved. Can you imagine telling your kid, like, you know, for those of us that are parents, like, oh, I'm going to outsource teaching my kid how to ride a two wheeler.
Yeah.
You know what I mean? And you expect your kid to ride a two wheeler, but you weren't willing to hold the handlebars. You have got to work with your script writer for the first month to teach them your voice, to teach them your style, to teach them your sort of like your angle. And once you do that, yes, you can be in a place where you outsource everything. So I want you to know it's possible. But. But it's not an overnight thing. You know, it's something that I would say 30 days of working with a script writer once a week for like an hour, dialing in voice, making a list of, hey, I never say this, but I like to say that you need to come up with shticks. You need to come up with like a. What's your opening intro? You know, these types of things.
Six dogs, husband to a superwoman. You say that every time. Yes, right, right. No, but you know, I understand that and I do exactly that because, you know, I'm completely hands off. I land up, you know, a day before the interview, I read about that person. Unless, you know, it's. There are people like, for my channel when I've. But the question that I wanted to ask was, I see a Lot of people making very successful channels, but they're not there. It's like the. The eight. Eight things that the famous chef Gordon Ramsay never told you about, or the seven things to do in Dubai and that they had nowhere. They hire somebody from Fiverr, they take stock photography, they have a nice voiceover, they make interesting videos, interesting topics, but they're not there in the video at all. There's somebody doing travel or cooking or whatever, and those channels are blowing up. So what I'm saying is that a lot of people who are like, it's too much to go in front of the camera and face yourself every time and all of that. Can I not just be a scriptwriter and everybody else does everything for me?
Yeah, yeah, you can. Absolutely. And that's very. You can even be on the video and take care of that. But what you're talking about are faceless videos. And I think that if your industry lends to that, it's a good idea. You know, we've got a member of the school, Mandy Jo Rindage, who's a walking coach, and she does wonderful work. And we've brought her from a place of doing faceless videos to now showing her face. And this was a confidence thing for her. She just didn't feel. Feel pretty enough to be on camera. Mandy, I apologize if that's being too personal here, but I applaud your boldness and your bravery. My conversation with her is that, like, the reason your videos aren't generating any kind of real business right now is because there's no connection. Now, if you're doing like seven places in Dubai or top three surfing spots, you could get away with it. But when you're coaching or consulting, you got to develop relationship. And so this is where the great video formula comes in, too, right? Because you could show your face for G and R and then not show your face again until T. Right, right.
Got it.
Right. So there are ways around it. But I always say this. You know, if you are unconfident in showing your face on camera, I understand, okay? I broke my. I was punched in the face when I was in high school, and I broke my nose. And ever since then, my nose been a little crooked. And I, you know, I went through chemotherapy and lost a ton of weight. I got my teeth knocked out by a golf ball five years ago, like six years ago. So I understand those things. I had to walk around with no front teeth for two weeks waiting for a dentist to fix them. I understand it. Okay, so I'm with you there However, I want you to imagine that viewer at home with a leaky sink. I want you to imagine that viewer at home who. Who is quilting a quilt for their grandma, and they need to know how to do it for the grandma's funeral. Or maybe they're knitting a scarf for someone with cancer and they need your video to teach them how to do it. Or maybe that person who needs to lose 15 pounds before a gastric bypass surgery and they need your walking coach program to teach them what to do. Are you willing to deny that person their joy because you were unhappy with your makeup that day? Are you willing to withhold the blessings that you have to give people because you don't like the way your hair looks? I would argue that while understandable, it's selfish, and you're actually. Yes, you are withholding your greatness because of an insecurity that needs to be conquered, not coddled. So if you're that person that's like, I'm too ugly. I was burned as a kid. I have a big mole on my face. I want you to go watch a bunch of Dove commercials, right? Dove Skincare, because they are highlighting all of these women with abnormal skin issues and big stuff right here that you're. Ugh. And they're putting them on national tv, right? Like, this is the age for you to be you, moles, warts, and all, right? So don't deny. I encourage you first. I'm not challenging you. I get it. I get. I get the insecurities, and it needs to be conquered, not coddled. What I want you to do is practice being on camera with warts and all and loving your mission, whether or not you love the mirror reflection.
Lovely, lovely. Owen, we've come to the end of the one hour we asked for. Thank you very much for your time. I want. My last question was, do you always bring such energy to every show or is just us?
I do. Look, five years ago, I was granted a new lease on life when I was diagnosed with stage three cancer. And through prayer, medicine, grit, and determination, we were able to beat back that cancer into what has remained a remission. And so here's the deal.
The love of your wife and children.
What's that?
I said the love and support of your wife and children.
Absolutely. I am nothing without my wife and kids. Like, you know that Owen is a single. Owen is a different Owen. Owen video is everybody. You know, it's the team, it's my wife, it's my kids. And so, yes, I bring this energy when I have it. I'm also intermittent fasting today. I believe in intermittent fasting and the ketogenic diet and that keeps my brain sharp and my body sharp and so I feel really good right now. You know, I will be live streaming in two hours and I'll have that energy again and then I'm done for the day. So I do believe in energy management though. Like on Mondays I know that the mornings I bring my fire and in the afternoons I work on typing and writing emails and stuff like that. So I do bring the energy, I do bring the fire and you know, it's important to balance that. I got cancer the first time because my life was out of balance. You know what I mean? And so the whole thing is like if you only have enough energy for one stream or one video, crank it out, save it and then, you know, moderate, you know, we believe in energy management. I appreciate the question though because I've enjoyed the show and I want your audience to know how much I care about them and their success. Whether you're a six figure business or a four figure business, like, now's your time to shine, now's your time to go for it and the video marketing school can help you get there.
I love that. Owen, to you and your entire lovely family and everybody at the oven video team, from all of us here at the Internet moguls office, we wish you continued success. I'll be putting in links to all. We want everybody who's watching this to go and check out the video marketing school.com. we're going to save how you got the amazing domain name for another interview, another time or when we meet at the social media Marketing World 2022. Owen, it's been a pleasure. Thank you very much.
You're the best. Thanks for having me.
