Today we're going to talk about how to get hired as a social media manager.

The whole world is exploding on social media. Everybody wants somebody to manage their social media. You know why? Because this is one of the only multidisciplinary tasks which somehow is not possible for every entrepreneur or every freelancer or everybody who's trying to make a mark on the Internet to do it themselves. So they're looking for social media managers. I remember when we started way back in 1995, I remember we used to make predictions to say everybody's going to have a social media manager one day. It was, I thought of myself as Bill Gates making that prediction. When Bill Gates said that every single household is going to have a computer, I said every company is going to have a social media manager. And today it is true. Everybody is looking for a social media manager, but millions want to now join the digital bandwagon. Every new youngster. Everybody says, people of all ages, can I shift my career and become a social media manager? Of course you can. But what does it take for you to get through through that interview? What people to focus on, what industries to focus on, and what knowledge should you have? A lot of people ask, do I need education? Should I go to NYU for a two year course? Do I do digital marketing from Harvard? What should I do? My take on this is that by the time you come out of any university with a two year or three year program, the information that you've learned there would have become redundant. That is how fast paced today's digital social world is. So what are the five things you need to do to get hired today as a great Social media manager number one. You must understand that this is multidisciplinary, which means there is search engine optimization, web design, ux, ui, there is social media, there is online reputation management, there is newsletter marketing. There are so many things that constitute social media. So what is it that you want to manage? You could say that I become a project manager and I take care of social media. All the social media aspects of a business, for a business. Or you say, hang on, there are so many sub niches. If I become the best email marketer in the world, what if I become the best podcast creator in the world, what if I can go and go to companies and say I am the best creative, my creatives do the best on Instagram. So should I follow a sub niche or should I become a general social media manager? Well, you could go both routes. I would go the sub niche route because yes, I agree, if you're going the sub niche route, there are, there's lesser demand. There is, there, there's, there's lesser expertise, there's the number of people who are in that pool are less. But it's a long tail activity. But the experts get chosen in this long tail. That means that you're not going to find a lot of email marketing champions, you're not going to find a lot of great PPC ninjas, right? So if somebody knows that you're a PPC ninja or you're a great online reputation management champion, you will get hired in a snap with some company which really needs you and then you can demand the salary that you want. Now the other option is, should I become a social media manager who knows a little bit of everything? Sure, you can, you can be jack of all trades and you can then start honing your craft into saying, sure, I'll do everything from SEO to PPC to all kinds of paid media, Facebook advertising, all of that. But my specialty would be conversion on Facebook. So when you submit your resume for an interview, you say, I'm a social media manager with a strength in understanding consumer behavior and being able to monetize Facebook ads, selling products or selling services, whatever. Or you could say, I'm a social media manager and I understand all aspects of the business, but my specialty is to understand online reputation management and how to grow a brand's reputation online. Because eventually we all know that reputation is related to revenues and so I know how to make revenues through the reputation route. So you could choose any of these routes and say, either I become a sub niche specialist or I do all of those things together. And I still choose one path where I say I'm an expert at point number two. I know this sounds boring, but it's learning. Learning, learning, learning, learning, learning, learning, learning, learning. And yes, point number 10, learning. There is no shortcut to learning. Every single day there is so much information being dropped from on the Internet and we need to keep on being on the treadmill of this information. Here at the Internet Mogul's office, every morning at 9:30 and every afternoon at 2:00', clock, we have a training session because we want to be ahead of the game. We want our clients to be able to call us and say these guys know what they're talking about. We've been in the business for 10 years and one of the things that has helped me survive so many years is because I train myself and my entire team every single day, and so must you. But you know what? As we evolve and as we've come into 2017, you know what's become easier? What's become easy is the fact that today there is so. There are so many great people who are writing great stuff and posting it on their forums. So you can follow Michael Stessner, who's a great, great, great person. I had the opportunity to meet him. I attended the Social Media examiner and I met some great people over there. I will be going for Social Media examiner next year as well. You must log on to Social Media examiner on, on Facebook. It is one of the greatest platforms to understand what is happening in the social media world. They break it down not only with breaking news, but they break it down and they let you know how you can stay. Start applying those principles. They bring on a lot of guests. So Social Media examiner would be one place to go for your everyday learning. The second could be Social Media today. I love those guys as well. I've been following them forever. And in fact, I, you know, we show, we show Social Media examiner and Social Media today every single day in the office to the 155 people here. And every time that I'm at a conference or I'm at a workshop, these are the two channels that I speak about if you want to learn about Search Engine optimization. Search Engine Land does absolutely phenomenal content and you are able to stay on top of the game because like I said, whatever you've learned becomes redundant so fast that every day you have to see what's happening. So these are some of the channels that I spoke about. You need to learn on an everyday basis and you need to be a practitioner like Gary Vee. My favorite Gary Vee. Gary Vaynerchuk says you need to be a practitioner. Here at Internet Moguls, I'm running an agency where we have 155 of us. So we are doing campaigns for over 300 clients on an everyday basis. So we know we have a pulse on the market. I know how Facebook ads are reacting. I know what Twitter is doing. I know how voice is reacting. So what are the new up and coming waves? Some of them are doing well. Snapchat has not taken off in this part of the world and so on and so forth. But for you to be a practitioner as a New Orleans, a semi new social media guy, you need to start spending money. You know what people you, all of us who want to make our careers have from time immemorial been spending hundreds and thousands of dollars to go to good university to do good courses. I am saying today you don't need to go to university to start study digital marketing. Just keep a couple of hundred dollars aside of your own money. I know you don't want to do that sometimes, but put your own money together and start doing Facebook ads for your own brand or start doing Facebook ads for your friend's company and you see how Facebook is reacting today. Karan, who does all the photography for Internet moguls, Karan told me that he gave me analytics. So he as a filmmaker is now looking at analytics as well. Right? So you spend money on the forums that you're marketing and then start looking at analytics so you will know firsthand how things are working on the Internet. Doing things firsthand. Being a practitioner allows you to win way above competition. So on one hand you're going to websites like Social Media Examiner, Social Media Today, Search Engine Land and you're getting all that information that you need and after that you're coming to you spending some money and you're being a practitioner, spending a few hundred dollars and understanding exactly what it takes. If you spend $200 every month, just $200 on a Facebook campaign every month, in a couple of months you'll understand how Facebook works and you might hit upon a new business idea that you can do on the side as well. The third thing that I want to talk about, if you want to become a rock star social media manager, you want to get hired better your resume. You know what, I have seen myself over 4000 odd resumes in the last 10 years. When we started, social media did not exist in many parts of the world. And now social media is everywhere. And the agency that we're running and the clients that we work with in different parts of the world. I've seen over 4,000. I don't, don't ask me how they got that number, but I've pretty much seen, you know, everything that's out there on social media. And the resumes that are coming out, this is what I feel like doing with them, throwing them in the garbage for one reason and one reason alone, because these resumes are not telling me who that person is. They don't tell me what they've done on social media at all. And in some cases, the surprising part is the social media. The guy is here to apply for a social media position and he does not even have a social media handle. I'll tell you what to do. If I was in your place, I would suggest before going in, study the company, study their Facebook profile, study their Twitter, study their Instagram and all of that. And before going in for the interview, why not write a nice post about that company, have a few hashtags which build around that company. If so, for example, you're going to a social media agency. You can agency life, hashtag, digital marketing agency, entrepreneur life, all of that social media marketing, and then tag maybe the CEO of that company, maybe the hr, maybe the people you're going to meet so that they get to know the kind of work that you've done in real life. I don't know what these resumes are doing in 2017. You can't see anything about your social media work. Who you are on social media cannot be seen. So the resume, you have to rethink the resumes of 2017. A 2017 resume cannot be just paper. I'm not against paper, but if you're doing it on paper, shop, show us what you've done on Facebook, what you've done on Twitter, how your Instagram profile is growing, what you did for other brands. Maybe you did something for a friend. You know, like I remember Karan, when he joined, he showed, he did a video and he tagged tvf and the founders of TVF thanked him back. So Karan showed me that he had some understanding of how social media works. And that was one of the things that I liked about him when he came into the company. So when somebody is hiring, you show them what part of social media you understand. So that's the resume part number four. Your personal brand is going to help you get hired. Yes, I said it. Your personal brand is going to help you get sold. So if you're going for a job interview and you Want to get hired as a rockstar social media guy and you've done all your training that you understood stuff and you're ahead of the game and you're learning and all of that. And you walk in for an interview, people are looking at you as a personal brand. You know what human beings, they always looking at that first impression, how do you look, how do you dress that first impression? Because I'm a visual human being, I'm going to look at you, how are you dressed? Now, social media people could come in shorts, social media people could come in a tie with a pin, they could come in all, they could come in whatever attire they want. But what is their personal brand? On what is their personal brand? Here is what I'm looking at. So if you're coming in, before you come in, why don't you send me a WhatsApp message or why don't you tag me on Facebook so that I can have a look at your profile and say, hang on, this guy's got a nice profile. He looks good. Oh, we have some friends in common. Oh, really nice. This guy has more than 15,000 followers on his Instagram. Oh, this guy could be a mini influencer if he works here as well. So I will start analyzing what all opportunities are open for that social media manager. Looking at his Instagram profile, looking at his Twitter profile, looking at his LinkedIn profile. And if you are walking into a social media position today in 2017, saying that I do not, I'm not very active on Twitter, I'm not very active on LinkedIn. I'm sorry, I don't think you're getting the top jobs out there. What you will get is a support role where you will be working with a project manager, doing everything but making decisions, doing the strategy and all of that. If you want to be out there, invest in your own brand. I say this all the time in our afternoon meetings to everybody in my office. Invest. If you want to grow in life, invest in your own brand. What does it take every day, 30 minutes? 1 Instagram post with the right hashtags and tagging the right people. One Facebook post telling a story about who you are, what you're doing in your journey in life. One Twitter post commenting on what's the most relevant thing in the industry so you can see current trends and start focusing and commenting on current trends. And one post on LinkedIn talking about how you are as a professional is growing and tell people about other sites to go to. I mentioned Social Media Examiner, Social Media today. So whatever you are learning. I share links for that. So you are basically seen as a resource, a go to person for Facebook ads or a go to person for LinkedIn ads or a go to person for photography. So you need to have that presence and it does not have to do anything with numbers. You don't have to have a 30, 40,000 person profile. But it helps if you do. But if you don't, it's fine as long as even if you have 500 people, I see a lot of people on Instagram who've got 500 people and when they put a post, 200 of them, 200 people like it and I've got a lot of people who've got 5,000 and not even 50 people like their posts. So if you have more engagement, you are an influencer. So that's what people want to see when they're hiring you. Do you understand the game? And if you've done it yourself and if you're a personal brand yourself and if you're taking care of yourself, then you will be able to take care of my clients as well. Well, that's most important. Point number five. In an interview you will always be given a case study. How would you market this phone online? How do you market this pen? How do you market this doodle? What would you do if I gave you this as a client? Now the first thing you have to put yourself in, the mindset you have to put yourself in is not a sales mindset. I see a lot of people coming with a sales mindset. Wiffm. What's in it for me? This is not what you have to think. This is not what you have to think at this time. You have to think what can, what is it for a client? I always say when we go to a doctor, say, if you go to a doctor, say I've got heartburn or I've got a, I got, I've got pain somewhere or whatever. The doctor says, how long has the pain been there? He listens to you, right? He listens to you and he gives you a solution. He doesn't talk about money. So the first thing you need to do when you are given a case on how you don't talk about, I'll promote this on Facebook. I'll do this. This will be my budget for Facebook. Nobody wants to hear that. People want to know how much you are capable of putting that consumer, yourself in that consumer's shoes to be able to offer them a solution that works for them. So for example, if you're selling, say these phone Covers. So you say, I send trendy phone covers. I'll make them different colors, and I'll have different pictures on Snapchat, or I'll have different colorful pictures on Facebook, or I'll do a collage on. Or I do an Instagram story. I do different. These kind of things. And I will promote it to people who are, say, 15 to 25. They're youngsters who can still afford things which are 5, $7 with their pocket money. And this will be my target audience. So for this target audience, I'll run these kind of ads on this platform. Then for the slightly more expensive phone covers with the batteries, which are $100, I will now go target people who are above 245, maybe who can afford these kind of phone covers. And I still make it trendy. These are still people who are, you know, youngish. So I still make. I'll make trendy cover photos and all of that. And I'll say, don't make sure you never drop your phone or nothing happens to your phone or you never run out of battery and 299 or $89, whatever, for your, for your campaign, for your program. And I will run this on Facebook during these times when these people are looking, or I run it on LinkedIn to those professionals who I know can afford this. Or I'll target a company. It could be Internet moguls, it could be IBM, it could be a big company, small company, people who are there in my vicinity. If you're an offline store and your store is based next to a lot of companies which are selling all of this kind of stuff, so you can target those people. So if you already know your targeting and you understand, you are able to convey to the person that you're talking to that, yes, I am. Anytime you give me an example and you tell me what to sell, I am able to put myself in that person's shoes, my client's shoes, and say, this guy wants to sell this, and therefore this is his audience. This audience is active at this time on these channels, during these times. And this is what I should sell to them through these creatives. If you're able to do that, if you're able to do these five things, you're pretty much hired at your price. You can demand the price. So that's all. That's all for today. This is the video I wanted to make because every single day. I spoke to Sunny Raduzzi yesterday. She's. She's great. She's been doing great videos. And I spoke to her on how she makes her videos. She says, my videos come out of the G general questions that I have in my mind and my clients ask me. So she keeps an ear out. And I thought that was great. Thank you very much, Sunny, for that tip. So what I did, because I meet a lot of people and I find that resumes are just not getting them hired, not getting hired here, not getting hired anywhere, or even if they do, they get hired at substandard positions. So if you are looking to get hired as an ace social media manager, and if you're getting wanting to get hired, better rewind this video, look at those five steps, and let me know if I can help you with anything else. Thank you very much for watching the Five Steps on How to Get Hired as a Rock Star Social Media Manager.
