Avi Arya interviews Joe Henkel about starting a YouTube channel from scratch. They cover finding your niche, creating content consistently, and the realistic timeline to monetization. Henkel shares what actually works for new creators trying to build an audience.
Not be an expert at any one thing, but life and journey has taught you certain things.
It depends on kind of what niche and area of your life you're speaking on, but you have something, everyone of us has something interesting to say. Start where you are and start making videos around your passion and your purpose.
Been telling them, hey, you know what? You can actually build your life on this channel and have a nice income, self respect and have no fear searching.
For make videos on that topic. Make videos kind of related to some of the content in your niche.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode. We scout the Internet, we keep our ears peeled to the ground, and we look for human beings who have stories and information to share that have the potential to change your life by the end of the interview. We like to do interviews in a how to format so that at the end you have at least three how to's that if you implement right away, you'll start seeing a change in your life. The idea is to make fast changes so that you save the most precious commodity, which is time, and pour it back into your family. My name is Avi Arya, father of two girls, six dogs, husband to a superwoman, a streetcar racer turned hotelier, now social media marketer and founder of Internet moguls. And today's guest is Joe Henkel. Joe, welcome to the show.
Thank you. I'm glad to be here.
Joe, like I always say, the shortest distance between two human hearts is a story. So before we begin, we'd love to hear your story. Who are you? Where you come from? What's happening in life?
Yeah, I live in the United States.
I live in Southern California, and I've lived in California for the last few years. And right now I run a media business that I started recently, and we help small businesses and individuals grow on YouTube and reach more people on social media.
Excellent. So how did that happen? What were you doing, like, when you were growing up as a child? Did you want to be a skateboarder? Did you want to tie your home to a million balloons and just fly off? Do you have a plan?
Yeah, I loved playing sports.
I loved playing football and stuff, but I was just passionate about helping people and passionate about just my faith and following Jesus and just my religion.
And I just want to help people with my life.
And just kind of as I grew, I just looked for different ways that I could help people.
And kind of the last year I.
Realized, like, oh, there's an opportunity to help people, especially the last few years through YouTube and then through this business.
To help people Reach people with their.
Message and make money and to have just the life they're created for.
Lovely, lovely. So, Joe, tell us how for people who are, you know, you're a man of God, you have faith. I love that a lot of people have, are struggling with faith right now, but YouTube and creators like yourselves are coming to their rescue and telling them, hey, you know what, you can actually build your life on this channel and have a nice income, self respect and have no fear. Because if you have no fear in your life, you live a life of purpose, happiness and close to God. So tell us, for those people, you're here for a reason. I believe that. Tell us what are the first few buildings, steps that people who've never been on but are watching this interview and saying, I want to become a YouTuber to be able to take care of myself. What should be their message? How do they start? How much money do they need for equipment? Just lay down the basics for us, please.
Yeah, so I believe that each one of us have a message inside of us and we all have a purpose and knowing kind of our message and our purpose and passion in life. And everyone who's listening to this knows something that could help other people. And whatever that is, whatever that knowledge is, whatever that passion is, you can take that and use that to help other people by sharing it. So start there. If you don't know where to start, what type, what type of content you want to make, find a message that you know that's going to help other people, whether that's the knowledge you have, a experience you have, whether that's a belief and passion you have, start creating content around that. And I recommend just starting with what you have. So it's free to sign up for a Google account, free to Sign up for YouTube account and start there. Whether that's just, you know, recording with your phone and recording yourself or recording with your webcam on, or you're able to afford nice camera and equipment, start where you are and start making videos around your passion and your purpose.
How do I find what my passion is? I'm broken. I'm scared. The whole last year ripped me from my business, my dignity, all of that in between. How do I find my passion?
Maybe it might take a little longer and take a little bit more work for certain people, but we all have something in us that keeps us going, something that keeps us just going in life. And maybe part of what you're kind of your journey is right now is figuring that out. And maybe you, you just want to talk about your journey so far. Because we all have a story, we all have a life that we're going through and keep going and sharing that story until you can find a way to share that and find a way that you can make that. Until you find out really what you believe your purpose is. You can start by sharing your journey and sharing the things that you're learning along your path.
Got it.
So you're saying you need not be an expert at any one thing, but life and journey has taught you certain things, even failure and how you're still surviving. So share what you're going through right now. That itself may be a message for other people.
Yeah. And eventually, hopefully you, as you go on your journey, you find something that you're really passionate about, you find something that you can become an expert at and then start speaking on that and teaching other people about that. But if you're not there yet, you can just start where you are.
Got it? Got it.
Okay, I've got a couple of more questions. So, Joe, tell us, when it comes to YouTube, tell us, how do you get the most common question, how do I get subscribers on YouTube?
First you need to make videos, and then you need to make videos that people want to watch. So they have interesting titles and thumbnails and topics. So you're talking about something interesting and then when someone clicks on it, they want to watch the whole thing. So the main thing is making it interesting. So it depends on what niche and area of your life you're speaking on. But you have something, everyone of us has something interesting to say. So you have to find out what's going to be interesting to the niche you're speaking to. So for me, I speak to creatives, so I want to answer just problems that creatives have. I want to help them find solutions. I want to help them on their journey. So if you're helping someone, people are going to watch those videos and they're going to want to watch more and they're going to subscribe, they're going to stick around for your next videos and then other people who are looking for those videos are going to find those videos. So there's, there's ways to do that, you know, find topics in your niche in your top topic and passion in life that people are searching for. Make videos on that topic, make videos kind of related to some of the content in your niche, but it just creating things that people are going to be interested in the way to start.
Got it.
Excellent. And so I've got two more very interesting questions. One is. Joe, what should be the schedule? Once a week, once a month? How many videos should I make before I start seeing some results?
A lot of people in the space and people who are expert in YouTube say it takes about 100 videos to really get rolling on YouTube. And I found that to be true on my channel. And a lot of my friends would say it's like 100 or sometimes 200 videos to really start getting rolling, whether that's monetization, whether that's 1,000 subscribers, and then it starts to grow exponentially after that. So the more videos you can put out that are high quality and the faster you can do that, I think the faster you'll get rolling. So if you can make three high quality videos a week, that's awesome. If you're still new and you're still like, still figuring it out, I recommend at least once a week or at least two or three videos a month to start.
Got it. Okay.
And my last question on YouTube is what kind of monetization can you expect? Because I should know what I'm. What I should expect. Mm.
YouTube is definitely my favorite platform in terms of monetization compared to any social media platform because there's so much reach and there's exponential growth there. So after you have a thousand subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time, you can start running YouTube ads. So for every view that people watch an ad before video, you'll get, that'll start contributing to the money you're making. And then you can do affiliate marketing, which is sending links to Amazon or other websites. And if someone clicks on that link and buy something, they can get paid or you can sell your own product or service. So if you're starting a business and you're starting a YouTube channel around that business, you're going to generate leads and get clients towards your business that way.
Got it? Got it.
Now, Joe, I. We asked for half an hour. We have one more question, but this is an emotional question and a lot of people may not want to answer it. It might be personal. And if it's difficult emotionally for you to answer it, then you can ignore it. Are you ready?
Yeah.
Who is your favorite superhero and why?
Hmm.
I'm going to have to go with Batman. I just grew up a big Batman fan. I mean, I love all the Batman movies, especially the Dark Knight movies with Christian Bale. So he just. I love the human aspect of him and kind of his journey and struggle, but also trying to do his best to help people.
Awesome.
And so, Joe, thank you very much. For giving us your time. I would love to stay connected. Before I go, we had a special guest who wanted to say hello to you. Something tells me you know who this guy is.
Yeah.
Excellent. So, ladies and gentlemen, I hope you learned the basics of having faith, understanding what your channel is all about, making the first hundred videos, working towards optimization, talking about your passion. If you don't really have anything right now, talk about what interests you and things will move from there. So this we had Joe Hankel today helping us with our YouTube. So all of you people who are watching in the comments, just go and type one thing that you learned from Joe and we're going to send you the Internet moguls. One winner is going to get the Internet moguls of the book emailed courier to their home posted address. Thank you very much, Joe. And I'll just sign off and come and say hello to you. So thank you all for watching. This is Avi Arya, father of two girls, six dogs, husband two and superwoman. Streetcar racer turn hotelier, now social media marketer and founder of Internet mogul.
