The RIGHT Way to Set Up Google Ads Conversion Tracking for Shopify

Austin LeClear shows two ways to track Google Ads conversions on Shopify: using the official Google app for automatic setup, or manually creating a conversion action and adding it to a custom pixel. He recommends running both as backup, setting one as primary to avoid double-counting, and testing the tag with a test checkout.

There are several ways of setting up conversion tracking for Shopify and Google Ads. However, I'm going to give you two. One, super simple and it's the easiest and then the second, a little more complicated. I'm going to give you step by step instructions and codes on how to set it up. It'll be very easy for you to actually integrate. Now I recommend running both and I'll show you the settings to make sure you have on inside your Google Ads account. So you're not double tracking but, but I recommend setting up both of these because if you run into any issues with one of the tags, you have a backup tag that's already running hopefully correctly and you can switch over to it if you need to if there is any sort of glitches that take place with the other tag. So I'm giving you two ways of doing this. One simple one a bit harder, but I would recommend doing both. If you have a Shopify account and you are trying to set up conversion tracking with, with Google Ads, let's dive in. Okay, so the easiest way of getting tracking set up for Shopify is just using their app. So I'm in Shopify, I'm just going to type in Google up in the search bar. You're going to find Google and YouTube. Very brilliant name of their, their app and then I'm just going to install this. So it's just asking for some data to connect. All good there. Okay. Now this is in my Shopify account and all I need to do is connect my Google account to it. So it's going to ask for my information. Continue allow. It wants to create a Merchant center account if you already. And so this will be blurred out because it's, it's showing other accounts I'm connected to. If you already have a Merchant center account, then if as long as the email that you're using to the Google Ads account you just connected is, is connected to that account or has access to it, you should be fine. In this case, I do not have a Merchant center account yet for this store. So I'm just going to hit create new Merchant center accounts are separate accounts. So you'll have your Google Ads account that you're logged into Merchant center account and then obviously your Shopify store. So this is going to go through this creation process. Okay, so I'm in, you know, I've been, I've connected my Google Ads account. Now I'm connected to my Merchant center account. If you go into the Google and YouTube app and you go to settings, if you go down to conversion tracking, you'll see how this is already turned on. So what I need to do now is go into my account. In your Google Ads account you are going to want to make sure Google Merchant center is linked and then also Shopify. So Data Manager is where you go. So you go to Tools and then you go to Data Manager and then here you're going to go to Shopify. Now you need to make sure that you have admin access to your Google Ads account. You should, but if you don't, you will run into an issue here. I'm going to hit direct connection. You hit authorize and then you just put your store in and then this will take you to the connection. So this is now saying, cool, want to connect. Here's my account. Now it's saying you already have conversion conversion measurement set up in Google Ads and that's because in this account I do have other conversion tags. This is like a testing account. You probably won't see this, but if you do, don't worry about it. You're still going to want to hit add so you can keep your existing setup. And then this would add conversion tracking. In this case I'm going to hit add. This is all turned on. So for customer match I'm going to hit turn on. You'll want to do this as well. And this just creates lists for you on your customers and then you're going to hit complete setup. Okay, so now it's asking basically use case. So we're going to do audiences. I'm just going to hit. You hit this data was collected and being shared compliance and then you hit continue. Okay, I've connected Shopify and now it has pushed in. It's called Google Shopping App purchase and that's it. Now the one thing you may want to do in here is if you need to edit like your click through window. So this is going to be set to 30 days but it's automatically going to be set to data driven Attribution. Here we can do. Yeah, every conversion is fine. That's what we want. Set the primary. That's what we want if we truly are going to be using this for our main E Commerce conversion tag. And yeah, so here it's, it's all good. Enhanced will actually be set up as well through this. So you're all set. So in there, using the Google and YouTube app, you can easily just integrate Shopify, Merchant Center, Google Ads together and then push the conversion data over. Now the second option is going to be a bit more Developer world because we're going to be using tags and codes. I mean going to give you all of that. The reason I recommend having both set up is this app at time gets can glitch out or not pass information correctly. It's kind of rare, but it does happen. So I recommend having a Google Ads tag directly installed. And then also if you want to use the Google Shopping app purchase as like a backup, I'll show you what to do. You don't want both of them running at the same time. That would create duplications or inflation of your or inflate block by double your actual conversions. So I'll show you the setting there in the Google Ads account on making sure that doesn't happen. But you can run the backup there by running both tags. So let's dive into actually setting up a real Google Ads tag and then implementing the code on Shopify. Okay. The second way of setting up conversion tag for Shopify is actually setting up a Google Ads tag and inside of your Google Ads account and then implementing some code inside of your Shopify store. So it sounds daunting, it's not. I'm going to show you and I'm also going to provide you with the tag that you need to implement the actual code inside of your Shopify store. So inside of your Google Ads account we're going to goals summary and then we're just going to hit create conversion action. Then here it's going to want you to scan your website, do all this crazy stuff. Super annoying. You hit scan, you did that thing and you just scroll all the way to the bottom and then you just hit add a conversion action manually. Here I'm going to hit purchase and then I'm just going to put purchase Shopify and then I'm just going to put test store for my own sake here, just usually just name it purchase or Shopify purchase it. You don't have to go too crazy with it. Right. It says for your own naming sake. Also you're going to want to make sure it's on primary so this that this actually will get counted as a conversion in your account value. Use different value for each conversion. You want this set up that way because what we're doing is dynamically passing revenue back. So if someone purchases a thousand dollar product, we're pushing a thousand dollars back to the value of that conversion count every for E commerce click through conversion window. 30 days is standard. If you have a super long sales cycle then you can push this out to whatever might make sense for you. Like 90 days, etc. But 30 days is standard. I'm just going to keep it there. Attributions Data driven enhanced conversion managed through Google Ads Tag. This is fine. And then this Enable Enhanced cpc. This is kind of a dumb thing they added. You just can turn that off. You don't need to worry about this. It's like a bidding thing and it's just, you know, yeah, super. I don't know why they would put this in the tag set up now. But you're going to hit done. Okay. And then save and continue. Then you're just going to hit done here and now you're back to here it is. So purchase Shopify, Test Store. So I'm going to click into this again and then tag set up. I'm going to come down here and then you're going to go to install the tag yourself and then you're going to go down to event snippet. All right. Now I'm going to hop into Shopify and then I'm going into Settings and then inside of Settings you're going to go to your custom customer events here. Okay. Then I'm going to hit add custom Pixel. And this I'm just going to put Google Ads conversion tracking. I'm going to hit add pixel. Now you don't need to do anything with this customer privacy stuff like permission and data. Don't even worry about any of that. But this code I'm going, it's going to have some standard stuff in there. You don't need any of that. You're going to copy and paste the code that will be given to you. Somewhere in the description below, we'll probably have a link to an article with this code in there. Then the code will. You'll see a few areas where it shows a W and then Conversion id. Okay, so aw, Conversion ID is in three different places. This is what you want to change. What you change is your conversion id. So in my event snippet, my conversion ID for this account, which you could also like if you did Tag Manager, this will actually be easier. So, so go back to this tag setup, go to Tag Manager. This will actually place it a little better for you. Here's my conversion id. If you're under that, install the tag yourself again and you're looking at the event snippet. What it's doing here is it's giving you the tag ID and conversion label altogether. And so to keep this easy for you guys, just go back to that tag setup, use Tag Manager and here's the tag ID, right. So it's 4:1, 4 for me and yada yada. So all I'm changing is that number. And so I'm going to go to this right before. Well, actually, hold on. All right, so I'm going to take that out and then I'm pasting conversion ID there and then that. There we go. That kind of screwed up for a second. Then I'm going to do the same thing here. I don't know, somehow like copy to paste over. So make sure. Now this bottom one, it says conversion ID and conversion label. So here I need both ID and then I need label and here's my label. So I'm going to copy this label. And then I'm going to hit and again, I don't know why it keeps doing that, but make sure that finishes. Then I'm going to hit up, go up to the top. I'm going to hit save and then I'm going to hit connect. Boom. Then if I go back to customer events, I've got both of them. Right. So here's Google Ads conversion tracking. Here's Google and YouTube. And then if I go back into Google Ads, I'm going to have my purchase Shopify test store. Now it's going to say inactive because obviously there's been no conversion to it. I'm going to do a test conversion. Okay, I'm at checkout. I'm going to test this now. So I'm just doing quick tests here. I'm using a boat, the bogus payment gateway. So this won't be like a real transaction. This is obviously a fake store. I'm using this address. Stuff will be blurred out. Card numbers 1 and then 12, 2, 612 3. You don't have to worry about any of this. All right, when hit pay now this will take me to the confirmation page of purchase and then I have something called Tag Explorer on and it is firing my Google Ads tag. It looks like Shopify fired. Yes. So my Google Ads conversion tag did look like it did fire. So we should be good there. Now inside of your Google Ads account, it will take usually several hours before this would now show as active. But I did test it. The tag is firing on the back end. So everything looks good. But make sure you test or you know, if you get a purchase that comes through, especially if you have a real live store, which most of you are, then you're going to want to just make sure as you get purchases that day, checking the next day to make sure that tag fired correctly. All you want to do is verify on a checkout page if that tag is firing correctly. So it's sometimes something you have to usually wait till the next day if you have a live store running to make sure the tag actually fired and is counting the conversion values correctly. So I would be back in my account and I would just be making sure this actually shows verified. And if I had conversions or sales after I implemented this code in conversion tag, that those sales got picked up. So usually, unfortunately, you set it up, it's going to be the next day before you start verifying that that it's correct. Now, if you have Google and YouTube app integrated with your account and you set the Google Ads tag up again, I recommend doing both because if the app glitches, I want a backup tag immediately ready. And it's good to have both for just comparison reasons. You do not want both. So in my account you're going to see both set to primary. You do not want both as primary. You're going to roll with one or the other. So in my case, I'm actually just going to roll with this tag that I set up. So I want this to be the primary. I want my Google Shopping app purchase tag. Again, that's coming from the Google and YouTube app integration. I don't want this counting as a conversion. So right now it's primary and my other tags primary. That would be double counting. So what you do is go into the tag inside your Google Ads account and all you do is you go to Action Optimization and you set this one or whichever tag you don't want to use, you set it to secondary. So what does that mean? It means it will still collect data. So when you're in the goals and summary of your conversions page, like I'm I am here, this will actually still collect data that you can see here. However, when you're looking at your campaigns, ad groups, keywords, etc. This will not count towards any of the conversion data that's in the conversion column inside of your campaigns inside of your account. Only. This purchase tag here, because it's set to primary, will actually be the tag used for conversions in the account for conversions being used to train your smart bidding. There you go. You now have correct conversion tracking set up for your Shopify store in Google Ads. Hopefully you can now start getting that data flowing into your advertising where you'll eventually be able to optimize on that. We've got plenty of other Google Ads content on this YouTube channel.
