In this video, I'm going to show you how to set up a Google Ad search campaign the right way. There are several settings you do not want to miss in my step by step tutorial. Otherwise you could end up with a lot of wasted ad spend. My name is Austin LeClaire. I am co founder of Grow My Ads, the channel you're on right now. We are a Google Ads agency and meta. We manage millions in ad spend per month for over a hundred plus clients and we've been doing it for many, many years. So we know a thing or two about setting up a Google Ads campaign the right way. Let's dive in. All right, so I'm inside of an account. I am simply going to go over to this blue plus sign. I'm under campaigns here on the left side and then campaigns down here. So here I'm going to hit blue plus sign, create campaign and then hit new campaign. Then you're going to have these campaign objectives show up. So you've got a lot of options here. Here's the thing, you can tell Google what you want, which most of you will and I usually I'm going to recommend you go for sales or leads. Not any of these other options. Not website traffic, visits, awareness, none of that. Sales or leads usually. Right. In this case, I'm setting up a campaign for a carpet cleaning business here in Fort Wayne, Indiana. So I'm going to choose leads. If you're E commerce and you're looking to sell things on your website, you're going to want to go with sales. You can also hit create campaign without guidance and that will still function just well. And you can just follow my step by step tutorial. But if you're E comm or legion, choose either sales or leads. I'm going to go with create a campaign without guidance. It does not impact your campaign's performance at all. All it does is steer you in the right directions while going through this campaign build process. So, so if you're clicking sales, Google's gonna immediately put, you know, the correct conversions allegedly for setting up sales, same with lead generation and then put you into the right campaign types. But you don't need to do that. So for me I hit create a campaign without guidance. Cause I don't need guidance. I'm an expert. And then now I'm just literally gonna hit select campaign type search, then use these conversion goals. It's gonna want to put conversions already in the campaign. Now if you haven't set up conversion tracking yet, I have some videos on conversion tracking. Set up. I will have the link to those videos in the description below. But for this campaign I want booked appointments and phone calls only. So we're going to remove the rest of these that I don't want. And all it is, the booked appointment is nothing more than someone who actually goes, fills the form out, books an appointment with this company and then phone call leads, which would just be phone calls that we're generating. Then I hit continue. Now I don't know why every time you do it it says select the results you want to get from this campaign. And it's like website call visits or phone calls. You don't even need to do anything there. You can just hit continue. Then it says campaign name. Now I like to use a nice clean naming convention. So I'm going to do carpet cleaning, Fort Wayne. So S stands for search and then I have like what I'm like actually targeting and then my geo targeted area. So we're going to hit continue and then boom. Now it takes me to bidding. What do you want to focus on? And so here this can get very confusing. And lucky for you, I have an entire masterclass on bidding which you can check out after you watch this. I'll have the link to that video in the description below as well. For most of you, you can start with conversions and then do not set a target cost per action here. This is an optional. So just say, hey Google, I just want to maximize my conversions. Now here's the thing. If you start your campaign with max conversions and you're brand new and you've never had conversions, it is possible that after a week or two of running, it might not do a whole lot for you, might not get a lot of impressions or clicks. And in that case what I recommend is actually flicking over then to max clicks because you need to get more momentum going. In my previous trainings on this channel, several of you might have already watched that. You might think, well, Austin, you used to say you should use max clicks first or manual CPC first. Yes, Normally I recommend that if you can get max conversions to work for you out of the gate, then you're actually better off because eventually you're just trying to get there. If impressions and clicks though stall out on you after a week or two, or even if you just launch in a few days and let's say you set a budget of $100 and it spends like 20 per day, it means it doesn't really know what to do. The machine learning is like, I don't have any conversion data to work with. So it kind of is what I call suffocated out. If that's the case, then you'll flick over to max clicks. But for most of you, just start with max conversions and see if that works for you as you start. If not, then just do what I recommended by switching back over to max clicks. All right, then you've got this customer acquisition setting. Forget this setting. You do not need to worry about this right now. So just ignore it. Hit next. All right, campaign settings. You've got Google Search Partners. We're going to turn that off. And we have Google Display Network. We're going to turn that off. It's funny how Google says recommended. It's not recommended. This is trash traffic on both of those. I do recommend if you get a campaign dialed in later on and it's working well for you and then now you're having like trouble scaling it, you can go test search partners. You never test mixing Display Network in with Google Search Network. Never. You would run Display as a separate campaign only this was a money grab by Google when they introduced this to try to mix a hybrid search and display. Totally different behavior on those networks. Never want that go. Google Search Partners can be okay, but it can also be a source of really low quality traffic. So I never start a new campaign with it on. So make sure you have both of those off. Again, you can test search partners later on when you have your campaign really dialed in. All right, location targeting here. I want to target Allen county, which is a county in Fort Wayne, Indiana, which is where I'm from. So I went in and I added Allen County. That's what I'm going to go target. Now this location options here, you're going to want to click this and this include you do not want presence or interest. You want present. So people in or regularly in your included locations. If you have this top one selected, Google can get a little too broad there and you start getting people outside of your area clicking your ads, you don't want it. So always make sure you have presence set up. This will make sure you've got a nice governed campaign and you don't let Google go too crazy. Okay, now languages. And by the way, this has been something that's been happening in accounts lately. So if you see this, it's set to English. It says item not found. We'll see if this causes an error. If it does, I'll tell you what to do. I have been told that Google's removing languages in the future and so this could be causing Part of this glitch. But we'll see as we go to try to actually like publish this. But for now you see this, don't freak out because I want to target English. That's what my ads are going to be in. But don't freak out if you see this in your build out then EU political ads. No, I'm not running and I do not plan to run. So make sure you just do that then. Audience segments here we can just layer in some audience segments. You don't need to think beyond that. Just if you have some audience segments that you can layer in on the campaign, you can collect some data on it. You're going to want to make sure though this targeting setting for it is set to observation, not targeting. If you click targeting that means you're only going to target people in those audiences. You do not want that. You want observation. So it won't narrow the reach of your campaign to just people in that audience group. But this will layer on some audiences. You'll get some data in regards to those audiences if you look at the audience insights tab later on in the campaign once it's live. So here we're going to have like home cleaning services and like if I type in you can also just do like a search. So if I do like carpet cleaning we can find so home cleaning services probably pretty good. I don't want in market for vacuums. Homeowners are probably fine, maybe even if I add like renters and yeah that's probably pretty good for now. I again this isn't going to impact much of the campaign's performance right now. But just layer some audiences that make sense to your business and just make sure it's set to observation. Then go to more settings. Ad rotation. You're going to want to make sure this is set to optimize prefer best performing ads. More settings. Start date. That's just the day you're actually launching this. And then the end date, just make sure it's set to none. There's no reason to really have an end date. You can just pause a campaign if you want to shut it off. Ad schedule. Okay, so it defaults to all days, 24 hours. This is a carpet cleaning company. They want to run from 8am until 6pm so that's 8 to this 18 here, Monday through Friday only. So if you are a business and like these guys can only get on quotes during the business hours and they can only answer the phone during business hours and so they just want to run ads during those business hours so if you are a business like that, make sure you set a proper ad schedule to when you can actually pick the phone up or, you know, take a lead and actually call them right away. For many of you, running 24 hours is just fine. A lot of our clients do it, but those that really rely on like phone calls, especially like carpet cleaning, then if they can't pick the phone up after hours, those leads turn into nothing usually. So for them, they just kind of want to preserve their ad spend right now and go to 8 to 6, Monday through Friday only. Now running after hours can be a great strategy because then if you have competition that tries to limit their hours that they're running on their ad schedule as well, that would give you less competition than in the off hours. But you got to make sure you can actually get to those leads then quickly or have off our, you know, phone call services where you're allowed or where you're able to then answer calls on the off hours or you have a third party call center answer those calls. So think strategically about this for your business. But this is where you would just add your ad schedule settings. All right, now you can ignore campaign URL options. Now if you're using any third party tracking tools, this is where you could set these up. But we're not going to go into that today on this video. And I don't have any tracking setup I need to do for any third party tools that are being used. So we can ignore that. And then page feeds, we don't need page feeds in here, so we're going to ignore that too. All right, we're going to hit next. Now this pushes us into AI Max for search campaigns. I have an entire video on AI Max already. That video will be in the description below if you want to check that out after you watch this full video. Here's the thing. You do not want to put AI Max on right away. This is something you can test later on once you have a campaign running and doing well. But for now, starting a new search campaign, we do not want to be testing AI Max. We make sure that you have this little toggle button off. You do not want to turn that on. So we're going to hit next. Now keyword and asset generation. Google can help you create ads and keywords if you put your like URL here. I don't need that. I already know how to do to all of this. I'm going to show you how to as well. So we're just going to hit skip and then now it's going to put me into creating an ad group. So here I'm just going to do click carpet cleaning. And I have already got my carpet cleaning keywords I want to target. And so here I'm just going to enter my keyword. So I'm going to show you a few things. I'm going to do this. So carpet cleaning Fort Wayne, Carpet cleaning Fort Wayne and then carpet cleaning Fort Wayne. So this is just as a test. I'm not adding this. This is exact match. The brackets, this is phrase match. And then when you have nothing around it, it's called broad match. Okay? Now these match types and how they behave, they behave differently. Carpet cleaning Fort Wayne exact match is going to be the tightest control you have. Carpet cleaning phrase match is going to be a little looser. Okay, and then carpet cleaning with nothing. Carpet cleaning Fort Wayne with nothing around it is broad match. It is the loosest match type. Okay, I am on Google's support page where it talks about keyword match types. All right, so they're saying for the keyword furniture store we can match the following queries. So for broad match, the keyword furniture store could match for home decor or cream color leather sectional. It's like, it's basically like an intent based thing but it's way, way broad phrase match. For someone who's searching keyword for the keyword furniture store phrase match. Right? This could show for cheap furniture stores, living room furniture deals. What store is the best place to find a bedroom dresser? This is a little tighter control, right? It's what they call moderate matching. And basically it's saying we're not going to show your ad for home decor or cream colored leather sectional because it's too broad. But this is the people are meaning to look for a store so we're going to show you furniture store based searches. Given the fact your keyword is a phrase match furniture store, then exact match would be furniture store or home furnishing shop. So it's super, super tight matching on the exact match. When you start out and you don't listen, you don't need to go down the rabbit hole of like wait, how does all of this make sense? By the way, I have a video on match types. That video will be in the description below. You can learn more all about match types. For now all you need to know is start with phrase, start with exact. That's it. You don't need to know anything about broad match. I recommend do not start with broad match. Some people might fight me in the comment section. On that I spend probably millions more than they do per month on ads. So we do an insane amount of testing. I still do not think broad match from the jump is a good way to go. Unless you're already historical spender spending tens of thousands of dollars per month and you're just launching a new campaign then that's different because you got all this conversion data history in your account. For many of you watching this video, that's not going to be the case. So stick to phrase match, stick to exact match, have a little tighter control when you're first getting going. That way you don't have a bunch of irrelevant traffic coming in and you get some good quality clicks and you start to get some momentum. Okay, so I'm back in my keyword section here in the campaign build. I'm doing carpet cleaning for Wayne Carpet Cleaning Fort Wayne and then I'm going to do carpet cleaning near me. Carpet cleaning near me. And then I'm also going to just do carpet cleaning companies near me. Okay, so I'm just starting with like a few quick keywords here. If you want to know like more about keyword research and how I talk or how I would recommend building out ad groups, I have more training on that on this channel. You can go check that out. But for now I'm just starting with this core group of like carpet cleaning Fort Wayne and carpet cleaning near me keywords because we're just building one ad group for this case. Okay, then it's going to want ad group setting for amx. It wants you to try to turn AI max on again so you can tell Google's really pushing on this. We don't want that. So make sure it says turned off for your ad group. We want to keep that off. All right, now we're at the create the ad section. This is going to be usually the most fun or the exciting part for many people. Now there's a lot here, right? In regards to creating an ad. I have an entire ad copywriting framework sheet that I use to create ads. In regards to like our angles that we recommend and best practices, we have a training community called PPC Copilot. I will have a link to that community below. This is a part of that training community that you get access to. This is not something that I give out free. So don't ask for this copy in the comments below. If you want to, just go join our training group and you'll get access to this sheet. So I've already created an ad based off of my ad writing framework. And, and I'm going to go ahead and just copy and paste over my ad copy now. Okay. I've got my headlines and descriptions loaded up. My final URL, which is where someone would land after they click your ad. I've got everything in here. Now there's a few things you might see. So like calls, right? So here if we wanted to have calls which Google will show like a call extension sometimes. So if you search something on your phone, I don't know if I can find like an example here, but if you search something on your phone, you might see that call button next to an ad. That would be a call extension. That if you want calls, which this company would, you're going to want to make sure you have the call extension added. So here I'm going to go ahead, add the call extension and so I'm going to put in a number and we'll go ahead and save that. And this, this is what it could look like down here. This phone number obviously is going to be blurred so I don't have a bunch of random people calling it. This is what it could look like. You see this little call icon? That's what it would look like on a mobile ad. And someone could just click it and then actually connect with you. So make sure you go add your phone number there and then you're just going to hit save. And then now you've got a call extension set up. Now you can also add images and I absolutely recommend adding images. So here you can go in and go have Google crawl your website and it'll pull images from your website. So here it did pull a few. You can use free stock images. Like if I type in carpet cleaning, this will find just free stock images that we could use. You could also do an AI generated using Google's AI technology now, which is pretty cool. And so here we could just describe carpet cleaning. I'm just going to actually see what this does with like a very generic search. Okay, so I just put carpet cleaning and look, it came up with some pretty goofy looking AI images. I am not going to use those because that would not make sense for our business. Some of these might though, like this one's not the worst that could be used. But I'm just going to go ahead for now and select the images that it crawled from the website. Those are very simple. Now here's the thing. I'm not going to go add 20 in here, but I do recommend if you have 20 images that you could use because you want to give it different Sizes too. Go add as many images as possible. It gives Google more to work with when testing the ad copy. And so if you can add 20, go add 20. I'm not going to in this case because I don't have 20 carpet cleaning images right now. And I'm not going to spend the time to do that just because I'm showing you as a tutorial on how to build this. But I do recommend adding up to 20 images. Absolutely. Okay, so then we've got these other ad extensions or ad assets. So one is called site links. These site links are links that you could see on ads that will send you to other places on the website. So I'm going to do a quick Google search for Pizza Hut. You see these here. Order online, grab special deals and offers, check out our menu online. Big deals, big win, etc. These are sitelink extensions. So if I clicked Pizza Hut's main link, it's going to send me to Pizza Hut Deals, right? So it sends me to this landing page. However, if I click one of their site links, order online, it sends me to the order online page. So site links will just send people to other destinations, not your main ad final URL that we added. But here's why you want to use them. You could get all of this real estate, like look at Pizza Hut's real estate they just grabbed. By showing all of these site links, you have zero control of how many site links Google will show. But add at least 4 to 5, you can see 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. In this case, add at least 4 to 5. That way if Google decides to show 4 to 5 of them, you're going to take up a giant portion of the search page. So I always make sure to have at least four to five added to your campaign. Now, I'm not going to go add four to five site links right now to keep this video shorter. But go add, it's very simple. You just give it site link text. This is going to be like your headline. So like order online was, you know, Pizza Hut. And then I make sure to add two descriptions and then the final URL you want to send someone if they click that site link. So this, these could be different pages on your website, could be about us, contact us, a deals page, different services you might have. So lots of options. I also have another full video on ad assets. So if you want to go down the rabbit hole of knowing each and every ad asset that can be added, go check that video out. But there are plenty. So here we could add promotions Prices, structured snippet, lead forms, call outs, apps. I do recommend if you're running a promo, add a promo if you have really good pricing and you can call your pricing out at a price extension. Structured snippet, bit different here. It's more of a, you have to choose a header type. So they have amenities, brands, courses, degree programs, destinations, featured, hotels, yada yada. So there's lots of these different options. For carpet cleaning company, we could do several different things. We could do neighborhoods. So the different neighborhoods we target and we could just put the main neighborhoods in there. Or we could do like service catalog. So here we could do, you know, residential carpet cleaning. Now you can only go 25, so I probably just do like residential, commercial, office, air duct cleaning, rug cleaning, et cetera. Right. So I could add a bunch of those in there. Or you could, if you have different like styles or types, you could, you could go in there and do those as well. So I do recommend everyone should have a possibility of adding a structured snippet. Make sure you do. Okay, so there's structured snippet. Then we have lead forms. I actually don't recommend adding lead forms right now. A lot of times you can get like low quality form submissions. So lead forms are something I would make sure to add and test later. I want to get people on my site filling my form out on my website first. I want to train my campaign on quality data and so I'll test lead forms usually later. So lead forms is kind of a more advanced thing you can set up. We're not going to do that in this case and it's not something I recommend starting off with as well. Also call outs, these are just going to be like quick little features or unique aspects of your business that you can call out. So for example like free delivery or free quotes or open 247 etc. So go make sure to add four to five call outs. These are absolutely something you should have in your ads as well. Google has more information as you go through the build out there. Then there's apps. You don't need to run this if you don't have an app. So if you have an app, you can add the app. If you're advertising an app, many of you watching this aren't going to be doing that. So you can just ignore the app piece. So when it comes to these ad extensions or asset extensions in the ad creation process, make sure to absolutely add site links. Make sure if you take phone calls to have a call asset set up and add your phone number there. Then if you're running a promo, add a promo. If not, skip it. If you have really good pricing, then add the pricing tiers in there. Or, or if you're like, I would rather get to my website and kind of sell them on the site before I introduce pricing, then wait and skip pricing promotions. But if you have good pricing, then add it as a price asset. Structured snippets. Most of you, if not everyone, should be able to figure a way to have a structured snippet ad asset. So always make sure to have that lead forms skip for now. You can test that later. If you do want to take lead forms, call outs, absolute must. And then apps just skip. Unless you're advertising an app. Okay, there we go. Then we have tracking template. It's under this. Add URL options here. We don't want that. Again, this is something, if you're like running third party tracking tools or something, you can, you can set up these tracking templates. So unless you're doing that, you can just forget that. All right, now we're just going to hit save and there we go. So I've got my ad group set up, I've got my keywords loaded up, got my ad created and then I'm going to hit next. Now, budget, this is going to give you some recommendations. I already have a set budget. What I normally recommend doing is looking at sort of average CPC costs when you do keyword research and then have enough daily budget to at least get 10 clicks per day. In this case, the budget's $100 per day. So I'm just going to set my budget at a hundred. Google's going to give you some of these weekly estimates. Most of this is not true. So don't take any of this to heart. A lot of this is not going to be incorrect. Like a hundred dollars a day is not going to get them. Probably $13 CPAs, I can guarantee you that. So we're just putting it in and I'm essentially ignoring Google's advice there. There we go. And then I'm going to hit next. And now I'm in the review process. Okay, Google saying, I have a campaign built with this name. So I'm a hit. I'm just going to change that name to test. And it says your campaign's almost ready to publish. Let's checking for errors now. Okay, so if you run into this language issue like I'm running into, you can try to go remove it. That has worked. And so we've gone in and just hit like all languages. And then we hit next and then go to the review. Sometimes that doesn't even fix it and it's still this like, glitch. It's hilarious. It's like it's just a broken thing right now within Google. So the other thing you can do is just refresh your page at this review section. So that's what I'm going to do. Okay, there we go. You see how that worked? Now I actually don't want all languages, so I'm, I'm going to go back now to the language section and I'm going to put in English and then I'm going to hit next. I'm going to go review and then we're good to go. So it's just a glitch. It will happen. Not for everyone. Some people don't encounter it. If you do, just refresh when you're at this stage or try to go remove English, put all. See if that works for you. Then I'm just going to hit Publish campaign. Okay. I don't know why Google will do this, but you'll hit Publish campaign and then the next screen screws people up because it puts set up with a Google tag. We already have a tag set up. So I don't know why they just push you into this and confuse the entire process. So forget this page and just go up and hit this X button and that will take you out of that. Then I'm going to go back to campaigns, campaigns and I want to make sure is my campaign set up correctly. All right. I always go and double check every setting that I just set up inside of my campaign. And there's a few additional settings that I always want to make sure I set up before I launch. Now my campaign looks enabled. $100 per day budget. I've got my. I always check the location targeting right. So maximize conversions. Conversion goals look good. Air max is turned off. Location settings are good. All good there. Everything looks good here. So we're all set in regards to how, how we wanted to set everything up. Right now. There's a few things that I also recommend doing after you launch your campaign. One, you're going to click into the campaign. You're going to go to insights and reports. You're going to go to when and where ads showed. Then we're going to click devices and it kind of auto selects you there. Tablets. I go to this bid adjustment and I decrease this by 100%. Why? Tablets generally will have the lowest volume and convert the least. So I take it out as a variable on a brand new campaign. I only want to run on mobile and desktop. Then when I have a campaign that's working I will go back and turn it on by just removing this decrease of 100%. But I do not want it on. I don't want to spend any budget towards it on a brand new campaign. So I always decrease it. I also recommend adding negative keywords. So we're going to go to this audience keyword and content. You go to this keyword section here. Then you're going to go to negative keywords. So keywords are the keywords I'm bidding on. I'm telling Google I want to show for these keywords. Negative keywords would be. These are the keywords I don't want to show for. So here you just add your negative keywords. I have a full video on negative keywords if you want to learn more or again you can review our further training inside of our school group called PPC Copilot. But negative keywords are very simple. You're just adding words or keywords that you do not want your ad to show for. So for a carpet cleaning company I do not want the word rental, right? Someone looking to rent. So probably rental or rent, they want to rent carpet cleaning machines. That's not what we do. Competitor terms. So like steam clean is a big one around here. So that would be like a competitor term. Then the word used. We don't do anything with used Bissell Hoover. Those are like well known actual product names. We don't want that. We we've got jobs, job apprentice, ship intern, insuranship, intern. So these are people who would be like looking for jobs. So I'm just showing you a quick example of adding negative keywords. Think of thing, think of terms you wouldn't want your ad to show for the. This is just a quick example. I would go through a whole process or even just go ask chat GPT. So if I go to chat GPT and then I just go give me a list of negative keywords for my carpet cleaning business running Google Ads, even ChatGPT is going to spin up. I'm on the free version right now, see job seeker. So I could go add all of these, which we already did, add a bunch of them and then diy. So here I don't recommend by the way, doing what I just did is just like copy and pasting all of them. You're going to want to like review them to make sure they all make sense. Sometimes Google does a really bad job or Sorry. Sometimes Chappie GPT will give you some that you're like, wait a second. Something I would want to show for. So here there's a bunch like cheap and that this I wouldn't. Some of these I'd keep like we do run coupons and promos, so I wouldn't want to negate some of that out auto, boat, cars. All this makes really sense. So you can like add or ask ChatGPT. It can spin out a really easy list for you and then all you do is you're going to hit save and then that would save those negative keywords into that campaign. That way now your ad won't fire for some of those irrelevant search terms. Again, I have an entire video on negative keywords. So if you want to go down the rabbit hole of learning more about it, go check that video out. Okay. Another negative keyword that I always make sure to add or keywords and usually I will add, add these to a. It's called a list and I'll show you how to do that is your own brand name. So this is a company called Steamworks Fort Wayne. All right, I'm going to add Steamworks Fort Wayne. Steam works with a space Fort Wayne. And then some people will type Fort Wayne like this. So I'm going to do that as well. Okay. Why am I adding the brand name? So again, brand name is just going to be your business name. So if you're Tom's Computer Parts, your brand name is Tom's Computer Parts. Right. It's what people would be searching to reach you. As the business, we do not want our brand terms to show in a non brand campaign. I want to find new customers. I don't want people who are already searching my name that will skew the data of the campaign. You want to run your brand terms in a separate brand campaign. This campaign is meant for people cold searching carpet cleaning companies in Fort Wayne. That's who I want my ad showing to. Not someone who's searching Steamworks Fort Wayne who already know me. So I always add brand terms to my non brand campaigns. How I do that is I like to use a list. And so here when I come down to save, it says save to newer existing list and I just name it brand terms. Boom. I now have my brand terms for Steamworks Fort Wayne saved and now I can rest assured that I'm not showing my brand terms inside of this campaign. There you go. You now know how to set up a Google Ad search campaign the right way. I hope you print some money now with your new campaign build. If you want to learn more and get further training from me, check out my group called PPC Copilot. There will be a link to that group below. I've got my trainings in there. Q and A calls that we do, Q and A call recordings with complete summaries of those calls and breakdown. So it's ongoing Google Ads training. Lots of incredible people in that group. A lot of great conversations taking place, tons of resources like the responsive search ad template I showed in this video, along with a ton of other resources inside the group. So if you want to fast track your Google Ads learning and upskill quicker than doing a bunch of YouTube videos, go check and join PPC Copilot. I would love to see you inside. If not, no worries.
