We chase wealth and power as a substitute for immortality, but this unconscious drive for safety actually isolates us. Real safety comes from relational connection with yourself, others, and life itself, and from aligning money with deeper values.
Chapters
The unconscious need for safety, how avoiding death and clinging to influence distorts our choices. Questions of legacy inevitably lead us to the one truth wealth cannot control mortality. When we avoid facing our impermanence, safety becomes impossible. The psyche substitutes money for immortality, power for belonging. Wealth then turns from resource to isolation, and the isolation becomes a cage. Across cultures, accumulation has long been mistaken as freedom and protection you. Yet the very mechanisms once trusted to keep us safe and free now breed instability and emptiness, which is almost always unconscious. True safety is relational connection with oneself, with others, with life. To align money with deeper values is to remember that influence ends, but rather love continues through what we've helped create. Ask yourself, in what ways might acknowledging impermanence free you to use your influence more lovingly?
