A counselor works with a dying patient who is uncertain about the afterlife while their caregiver insists they will go to heaven. Therapists should stay open to all beliefs, avoid converting patients, and let family members offer reassurance without forcing their views onto someone at the end of life.
This family therapist is coming in as open as we can be to whatever the beliefs are, to whatever views may be there. And our client, our primary patient, may be afraid. He may not know, she may not know what's coming next, but she's working with it. Another family member that is maybe even a primary caregiver firmly believes this person is going to heaven and wants to talk about it and wants to be reassuring with their belief and really believes that's the best way to love their spouse. And, of course, the spouse is in a different state. As counselors, how do we help?
Well, again, depending on the level of.
Trust that we have with the spouse, we can be more emphatic or just.
Really humbly presenting the fact that the husband has a different belief structure. And it's wonderful that you have yours. But my experience as a counselor is that especially when you're in the final days, you don't have the luxury of.
Adopting somebody else's belief.
You're actually in an experience that's so beyond that. Whatever you believed in your life, you may continue to believe that or you may not. But wherever you are, it's a depth place and that you may want to consider, and I'm suggesting that you do consider, that you will allow him to have a different belief. You can reassure him that this is what you believe and open up a.
Place to ask him either to share.
What he believes or open up a.
Space to just have his beliefs and to allow those to coexist together rather.
Than believing yourself that you can convert.
Him to where you are.
And I know it's, of course, out.
Of protection and out of your own faith, but my experience as a counselor is it just doesn't work. And I'm sensing that there's a partial disconnect there and that the best way that you can support him is to have it be one that's going to allow both of you to be exactly where you are.
