This is a YouTube video titled "Introduction to www.HumanisticSpirituality.org" containing a monologue or lecture from May 2011 discussing the integration of psychology and spirituality. The speaker explores themes of humanistic spirituality, emphasizing emotional adjustment, compassion, and healing through awareness and sincere interpersonal connection. The content is reflective and educational, focusing on personal growth and the human experience.
Well, humanistic spirituality is really an outgrowth of 40 years of looking into spirituality and psychology and really being deeply fulfilled at one level, and at another level, really feeling somewhat empty. One of the great gifts that psychology has given us is to be able to access the human experience and be able to adjust better to this world emotionally. However, what it hasn't done is really highlight the best parts of our character and emphasize how critical they are to our own healing and to having a more fulfilling life. And spirituality somehow didn't help ground the ego and look at what most needs to be looked at, which are the ways that we unwittingly are hurting other people and hurting ourselves. So the integration of the two is really the essence of what humanistic spirituality is. Realize that tone of voice is a pathway to see the subconscious. Tone of voice is a pathway to become more aware of how we are hurting and create harm. And tone of voice is also a way that we can create well being and healing. Your energy in every moment is going to have an effect on the person you're sitting with. You actually have to find a place inside you that is sincere. If we don't really like people, if we're not really in a caring state, if we don't really like the person in front of us, we're going to have a limited capacity to be effective with the person that we're working with. Irritable. You're uptight, and that's one of the worst ones. When you can't know or you don't know, you say, why am I so irritable? Why am I so uptight? And you look around and there's no one to blame. That's horrible. It's much easier if you can say, well, it's their fault, but what if it's just you? We're not going to be able to do it unless we're doing the work ourselves. Anybody that wants to love you're going to benefit. If you move into an essential quality. That's the beauty of it. That's a life transformational event. If you start to move in that trend, it means you're vacating your own needs and your own desires and your own thoughts for a few minutes or 15 minutes or half an hour. And your whole attention is captured by caring for what their experience is and being interested in the nuances of it. Everyone wants to move towards basic happiness. Humanistic spirituality emphasizes the benefits that psychology has given, which is being in touch with our ego and being in touch with the human experience. But it also really emphasizes the importance of compassion and tenderness and strength and peace as being healing ingredients that are deeply needed to have a sense of health in this life.
