I’m a Doctor… But I Couldn’t Save My Mother | The Journey Of Rekha Rani

Dr. Rekha Rani, a dentist-physician, lost her mother to undiagnosed sleep apnea in early 2024. After joining the Conscious Breathing Hub, her blood pressure dropped from 170/90 to 120/85 without medication, her snoring decreased, and her cholesterol improved. She discusses how nasal breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system and why mouth breathing causes dental decay and systemic inflammation.

The day your mother has faced a challenge like choking, what inspired you to join CBH? Yeah. So what is your opinion as a doctor related to my mother?
Actually, she wasn't well from April 2023, and finally it was diagnosed that all her problems were related to sleep apnea. So we lost her in February, and it was a very painful moment for me, totally shattered, depressed. Um, my husband was, you know, always insisting that you're going to follow your mother's path. You have hypertension. I, I hear you snoring loudly, so you're following your mother, her footsteps. So you be careful. It's better you go ahead and get a checkup done thoroughly. Go and visit a sleep specialist. I didn't want that. Um, luckily for me, the Divine call, I should say, I heard you interacting with the person, lady, um, on YouTube. She had lung disease and she was saying that after joining your program, she found so much of improvement in all her parameters, and the doctor was astonished. Then I said, wow, this is the place I have to join. Before I joined CDH, it was 170 by 90. I have totally stopped medications, but now I'm not taking because it's 120, 120 by 85. My BP went down. And the snoring also reduced. I heal holistically. It's not related only to my physical aspect, it's also related to the emotional, spiritual, and you have touched upon the most important aspect of life.
Tonight's guest is not just a doctor, she is a daughter who watched her mother stop breathing. For 30 years, she balanced career, family, Responsibility with precision. A woman of science. A woman of structure. Until one night shattered everything. Sleep apnea. CPAP machines. A blood pressure reading of 170/90. And beneath the white coat, a grieving daughter, afraid of repeating her mother's story. She searched for answers, not as a cardiologist's wife, not as a medical professional, but as a woman desperate to save herself. And what followed was not just a drop in numbers, it was a drop in fear, a release of inherited patterns, a reclaiming of breath. Today she stands not just healed but transformed. Please welcome Dr. Rekha. Welcome, welcome to the podcast, Conscious Breathing Podcast, Rekha Garu. And I've been seeing your journey like in our classes also I've seen You're very, very consistently coming Diamond classes in the morning or prana healing sessions and engaging, doing all the activities. So before I talk about your healing, I wanted to talk about like, um, the day your mother has faced a challenge like choking and sleeping. Can you talk about that?
So first of all, I thank you immensely. I'm truly honored and privileged to be part of this this podcast session related to my mother. Actually, she wasn't well from April 2023. There were many— we were not able to understand what exactly, in and out of hospital. And finally it was diagnosed that all her problems were related to sleep apnea. So we lost her in February, end of February 2024, and it was a very painful moment for me, totally shattered. Depressed and in a shock for quite some time. And then finally I decided, no, I should pull up my socks. I'm a doctor, I should look after myself. My health should be a priority for me. Unless I am healthy, I can't manage my family. I have to support— I have a lot of responsibilities still. And once I'm done with that, I should do something for the society too. Before I depart.
Yeah, sleep apnea is actually a very serious problem. Many people not even diagnosed, they don't even know that they have this problem.
Yes, very true, very true.
So I know that you are coming from the dental background. Yes, dental background, right? So how do you think like this about the problem of sleep apnea? What is your opinion on this?
See, sleep apnea usually happens when the tongue falls back and the patient is not— I mean, the person is not able to breathe properly. So there are gaps in between the breathing. Sometimes it is so bad that it could lead to a fatality also. Person could die also. So it is a serious problem. So in India, the awareness is just catching up.
Yes, yes. In West, many people talk about this, but that's right here, like, actually, like, in data, it says 60% people are undiagnosed.
Yes, yes.
So if somebody who is watching this podcast, I highly recommend if you have those kind of symptoms, they need to go and do that sleep study. Absolutely. That will help them to understand like what exactly the challenges they are having with us. It's a sleep apnea, means they have to go through the procedures, right? Yes. Very, very, very important. Yes, very important. Exactly. And then you also started taking care of yourself. Like, what inspired you to join CBH?
The journey started I should say October 2024, my husband was, you know, always insisting that, see, you're going to follow your mother's path. You have hypertension. I, I hear you snoring loudly in the night, so you're following your mother, her footsteps. So you be careful. It's better you go ahead and get a checkup done thoroughly. Go and visit a sleep specialist. And who can rule out, you know, if you have apnea, sleep apnea, or not. But I was dreadful at the thought itself because I've seen my mother using the CPAP, and she used to feel so much of pain, discomfort, anguish. I've seen it all. So I was scared. I knew because snoring, it is related to the same problem. So I knew that the doctor would suggest you go ahead with a CPAP. I didn't want that. So then, luckily for me, the Divine call, I should say, in October 2024, I heard and I saw you interacting with a person, lady, on YouTube. She had lung disease, and she was saying that after joining your program And after going ahead with the LFC, she found so much of improvement in all her parameters, and the doctor was astonished. Then I said, wow, this is the place I have to join. So I went ahead with the 2-day breath workshop in the end of October, and then after which, the way you spoke, your testimonials, the way you marketed yourself, it encouraged me. To join the Silver membership. I did so in November, on November 13th, 2024, I joined the Silver. And then when I went through the LFC, the Prana healing sessions, wisdom classes, all these, I said— not the wisdom classes, LFC and the Prana healing— and then I decided, no, I should join the Diamond membership. So I went ahead and joined the Diamond membership on 26th of February, 2025. So I completed 1 year as a Diamond.
Wow.
Yes.
Yeah. So what was your BP like then?
Like, when I started, before I joined CBH, it was 170 by 90.
Oh, okay.
It was bad. It was bad. So my husband was not wrong in telling me, be careful.
So a cardiologist is within. Yes. So he himself warned.
Yes.
Sometimes we don't take it seriously when family members say, right? That is true. So yes, exactly. But yeah, now how is, uh, like, how, what are the improvements have you seen?
Wow, it's wonderful, sir. I have totally stopped medications for BP. BP, uh, it was 140 by 80, in between I think 140 by 85 after I completed LFC. But now I'm not taking because it's 120, 120 by 85 without medication, without medication. So it's all because of your guidance, all my mentors' help, and this program. It's an awesome portal to learn so much.
What did your husband say after seeing the video?
He was very happy. He was very happy. He doesn't find the time, but I'm sure he will also join this.
No, but because he as a cardiologist— people only come, the disease is growing, growing. It's not very rarely we see the people who like work on themselves and stop. That's right. So I think, um, so what do you think, like, you coming from the, like, background of doctors, like you both are doctors, uh, like many people still do not have trust on this. But in my opinion, I, I believe that we have to work in an integrated approach. I'm not saying you are great, I am great, anyone else is great. We have to work together.
Yes.
So what is your opinion on that in the scientific aspect? I know in our community also, whenever I talk about science behind breathing you also add up to whatever we are discussing. Can you talk about that?
There is a lot of, um, uh, what do you say, it's still a hiatus. It has to be developed, the interlink between, you know, the yoga as well as medical science, medicine. So sir, very aptly, he gave a wonderful lecture, Murti sir. I listened to that later on wherein he spoke about the Ashta Yoga and about how the fasting helps and all those things. I know it helps reverse most of the conditions. It was very enlightening. Yes, it should be there, sir. It should be inculcated. Perhaps the problems will reduce.
How it will impact in scientific way, can you tell us?
See, doctors are very practical, basically, so they want the results. So if the results are seen, they have to agree. They have to agree, they have no other go. So it's, it's seen, it's documented whatever is happening. So obviously they have to— yeah, it's not that they are only for—
no, I mean, I am asking about scientific perspective, how it works. Breathing in a science, in heart health, in our lung health, how it works.
See, breathing deeply, and especially nasal breathing, it It increases the oxygen absorbed. So we know that oxygen is a vital force, yes, which makes us live. So, and if oxygen is not there for about 2-3 minutes, we are done, because the major vital organs like the heart and the brain, they require oxygen. So it is so, so very important and vital. And you have touched upon the most important aspect of life— breathing. We are not there if we don't breathe.
Exactly. And also it works on activating the nervous system.
It in fact activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which makes us more subdued, cool. Anxiety is reduced, stress is reduced.
Yes, true, true. Exactly, exactly. And I want you to talk about, like, um, so you being a doctor dentist, like, you have— you might have seen so many people Yes, so many people like— what is the link between mouth breathing and dental problems?
Yes, there's a huge link. Reason is there's something, condition called dry mouth. In medical terms, it's called xerostomia. So this dry mouth, what happens? Why does this happen? Because saliva is not secreted, and when saliva is not secreted, the food particles get stuck onto the tooth surfaces. Then there is an interaction between the food and the microbes. So then this leads to various problems, like you have bad breath, you have gum diseases, you have the dental decay, so tooth decay. All these problems happen. And the causes of dry mouth, most important is the mouth breathing. So mouth breathing happens when the patient, the person does not know, in the sleep he opens his mouth and breathes. But because of which, what happens is the oxygen which is entering is not sufficient. There is a dehydration of the tissues. So when there is dehydration, then I told you the sequelae, what happens— the food stuff getting stuck and bacterial interaction. And there is a— because of this, the bacterial activity increases. So there is a spread of these bacteria to the other organs in the body. So all systemic problems also happen. And other causes for this dry mouth, you have autoimmune diseases like Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis. Then you have chronic inflammatory diseases like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis again, and I'm sorry, diabetes. And then you have even gut issues, gut issues. And if the nasal passage is blocked say because of a septal deviation or because of a polyp, again the same problem happens. So, and even if patients are on antidepressants or antihistaminics, that also causes a dry mouth. So the dry mouth has to be treated because it creates so much of health hazards. So what is the treatment related to mouth breathing? You can ask the patient to maybe tape his mouth. If it is related to a nasal obstruction, you can go ahead with asking the patient to do jala neti. It will help to clear their nasal passages. If it is a serious problem, it has to be attended to by a doctor. And if the patient can also take, what do you say, substitutes, salivary substitutes like pilocarpine, which will increase saliva flow. So saliva is so very important for our body.
True.
And the secretion of saliva.
And of course, with naturally, like with the breathing practices and all, by training like nasal breathing.
Yes, yes.
So that's a permanent relief.
Very true, very true. The best treatment is nasal breathing.
Exactly, exactly. Even I have seen like many people have snoring issues because of mouth breathing.
Yes.
Like, uh, even sleep apnea, it leads to sleep apnea also in long term. As well, that's great, uh, because mouth is a place where the food enters, right? So it's very, very important, this organ. Many people don't give attention to this.
It has changed, the, the trend has changed. Earlier it was like that. So mouth is a mirror of the body. True. Any problems which happen, first you can diagnose in the mouth. So very important.
Even doctors ask when we have fever, show me your tongue. So we didn't realize, uh, that like the importance of this, like That's true. Yeah, the way we breathe and like, like all the particles, bacteria also enters into mouth, right? So if we are breathing through mouth, all the dust particles, yes, enters into your mouth, then it's not good for our health as well. That's great. That's a great enlightenment. Thank you. Thank you for sharing that. And why did you choose Diamond membership and what changes have you seen after going through Diamond?
That's what I was totally floored. Being a Silver member, with the improvement in my health, my BP went down and the snoring also reduced quite a bit. So I was very happy. So I said, no, this is the place, this is the community I have to work with, and I have to be total till I die to be associated with, such that I heal holistically. It's not related only to my physical aspect, it's also related to the emotional spiritual. I have not anywhere come across all these Yoga Sutras. All this I learned only after joining CBH, after your wonderful discourses on Wednesday wisdom classes related to the Yoga Sutras, related to the 8 Pillars of Yoga, related to the Guru Paduka Stotra, and all these. I did not know before, sir. So spiritually, I am totally drawn to your program. Awesome.
Thank you, thank you. As many people consider health is only the physical aspect. Yeah. So what is your opinion as a doctor?
No, total well-being is when all the aspects are covered. It's not only physical. You have to be emotionally controlled and healthy. You should be spiritually inclined too. Only then you are a better human being and you feel satisfied whatever you're doing.
And along with BP, have you seen any other changes in your health?
Along with BP, yeah, my snoring has reduced. So basically my problem was related to hypertension, the high BP, and snoring, as well as I had cholesterol, high cholesterol. So the cholesterol has reduced, but I have not come to the levels which it has to reach. I'm sure I will get over that also.
Now are you confident that you don't have sleep apnea?
I am very confident. I'm very confident. Yes, sir. No, I don't want to go for a test because I'm happy. I'm leading my life well.
But you're not having any problem during your sleep?
No, I never had a problem during— I had snoring, so I didn't know, confirm whether it is sleep apnea or not. I was hesitant because I've seen my mother really suffer wearing that CPAP machine, so I was scared I will be asked to wear the same. So I didn't want to go.
True, true, especially like once we have that, it's life become very uncomfortable.
Very uncomfortable. She had that hospital bed also, we had ordered that wherein she can prop up the bed and then sleep. She was asked to prop it up a little and sleep because of her problem. So she said, please get rid of this CPAP machine as well as a bed once I pass. So it was, you know, I have seen her suffering.
So true, true, true. Got it, got it. Awesome. And how did this wisdom sessions, or like the philosophy, the chanting sessions which you are always engaged, helped you as a person and your work also? Like, because you, you being a doctor, you will be having very hectic schedule. And yeah, I also saw that you started spreading this knowledge to your students.
Yes, yes.
Can you please go ahead?
Yeah, see, the Wednesday wisdom is such an important aspect of your program. It deals into the spiritual aspects about yoga, about how we have to live our life, about non-attachment, about our link with the Divine. So it throws us— all these doors are kept open so that our mind absorbs it as deep as possible, and it gets impregnated so much that we become better human beings. Our interaction with people definitely there is a change, so much of a change. You become more compassionate, kind, generous. All these attributes are because of your program.
What inspired you to like take it to your college and teach? I saw that you have done a seminar on this.
Yes, sir. I felt my students, they are the youth, so they are the people who are going to be there for long, first of all, and they are going to spread the message. More, you know. And it's very useful to train the younger generation. It will go a long way in making India a healthy country.
So if your mother is with you right now, and what do you think like she would say to you?
She'll hug me tightly and she'll plant a kiss on my cheek and she'll say, dear, you've done the right thing. In joining CBH. You are breathing strongly, deeply. You do not have any— you're not taking any medications. I'm very happy for you. I hope you spread this message to many more people so that their life becomes more meaningful. This is what she'll say. And I feel very sorry that I didn't know about CBH when my mother was alive. Perhaps, you know, if I had known about it, she would have been there.
So what message you would like to give to the people like who's still struggling but they are not working holistically?
I would say that this is the best community to join because it heals you holistically. It's not only the physical, it is emotional, it is the spiritual, all in all. Wholesome, and the people are so wonderful. I have not seen a community wherein the people are so friendly, and you don't feel— you don't feel inhibited at all. Spontaneous, everything is so spontaneous. Awesome community, sir. And it's like a, you know, a chest of jewels, I should say. It's like a chest of jewels, the CBH. Each and everything you take out is a precious jewel. LFC, Prana Healing, they are related to physical health. If you take the other things, like say, for example, the Wednesday Wisdom classes, reading, chanting, spiritually you become better. If you take goal writing and then you take the reading the affirmations, and they help you stabilize emotionally. So it's like the Akshaya Patra.
When you talk about goal writing, some of your goals has come—
like, my goals have come true, really. Yes, my son got married, so that is— I was a little worried about that. He got married. Then my daughter got a job, and my husband's hospital was set up, and he was doing very well. I got rid of my BP.
Yeah, so all these goals you have been writing?
I've been writing, yes.
Awesome, awesome, great.
So I would like to give a message.
Yes.
Everything is related to thought. How you think. The power of thought is so very important. So if you think positively and you pay gratitude to whatever you are as of now, everything will work out wonderfully for you. So positive thinking, which I've learned again from your community, writing positive goals, and also always trying to be close to the Divine by interacting with him, talking to him, paying gratitude to him. These are the two things, takeaways from my— whatever I wanted to tell.
Because you have to be receiving more. It's always not only about taking, taking, it's also receiving more. When we are grateful, that God also will give you— give us more, because he might be giving so many things to you, but you're not seeing that.
Yes.
So once we start practicing that gratitude, okay, he's really like implementing whatever I am saying, he is really grateful for whatever I am doing, and then more positivity will happen because we are what we think.
Absolutely.
You need to have that trust and belief in this.
Yes, sir, very true.
Now we have a special segment, and Dr. Rekha ji, which breathing exercise you would like to practice?
I love Brahmari, sir, because it helps in increasing the nitric oxide levels in the blood. Nitric oxide is so very important Vital. Again, it's a vital force like oxygen.
Absolutely. And also it helps in vasodilation, right? Vasodilation, very, very powerful. Like, and Brahmari produces more nitric oxide than any other breathing exercise. Viewers, whoever is watching this, you have to practice this regularly. Let's do that. Sit comfortably and we'll do the first variation, the easy variation, where we just close our ears and we'll say humming sound. While exhaling, we have to produce humming bee sound. Honeybee sound. How the honeybee makes the sound, noise, like that you have to make that sound. And from your nose, only through your nose, not through mouth, only through your nose. Yeah, let's do this. Sit comfortably, roll your shoulders back, palms facing upwards. Focus on your breath. Inhale and exhale slowly. And slowly close your ears, gently close your ears, small ears. And breathe in deeply. While exhaling, produce the humming bee sound. Mm. Now close your ears. Let's do this for 3 more times. Breathe in, close your eyes. Last time. Mm. Slowly release your hands. Observe the vibrations. And gently open your eyes. Practice this especially before you go to the bed 15 times every day. You will see the excellent results when you practice every day before you go to the bed for 15 times. Brahmari is a very, very powerful practice that everyone has to adopt. Thank you, thank you so much, Dr. Kaji, and for coming and enlightening all of us. I always say the same thing to all the members, like, um, you did not know about CBH before when your mother was facing challenge. But people who are watching this, if any of your family members or any of your— you are going through this challenge, I do not want you to go face that kind of situation. Take action and implement. There are many ways along. Medical sciences are great. But there are many other ways along with medical science, because doctors are helping you in managing that, but it's you the one who has created the disease, and you are the one who need to change that. Then only you'll be able to see the better results. I don't want you to— if you are a daughter, I like— I don't want you to become that kind of daughter where you are helpless. Now that you know about this, you have heard this podcast, I highly recommend you to take that action to help your mother or your children. If you're a mother, your children are going through any kind of health difficulties, ask them to try this and implement this so that way they can able to see a lot of improvements and we can avoid majority of health challenges. Yes, in the long term. Thank you, thank you so much for enlightening us. It means a lot and super, super inspiring. You have just watched another powerful episode of Conscious Breathing Podcast.
