Believing or Being?

Betsy Guerra uses two stories about imposter syndrome to argue that you have to believe something about yourself before you can become it. She recommends using repeated positive self-statements to retrain your subconscious, even if they feel like lies at first.

What's better, believing or being? It may not be what you think. Let me tell you a story. I have a client that came recently and he was sharing about his relationship with his dad and how he, he always wanted to make him proud but never got to hear his dad say that. And he's a physician. He's a very successful and smart man. And he was telling me like he just had an evaluation and he thought that the reason he got such a high score and a good evaluation is because the physician that evaluated him loved him so much and was so nice rather than because he earned. He earned that he's so good at what he does that he deserve to have an amazing evaluation. And I remember thinking, he doesn't believe in what he truly is. He is a smart. I'm a witness to that. He is a truly bright, successful man. And he's a physician that's serving and helping our community in amazing ways. But he doesn't believe this. He thinks people are just kind and nice and tell him positive things because they're kind hearted. So what is better, believing or being? Now let me tell you another story. My good friend has a normal body. Beautiful. She's gorgeous, but she has a normal body. And the other day she was looking at some Victoria's Secret models and I was like, oh my gosh, I wish I looked like that. And she was like, well, I think I look like that. And I remember thinking like how beautiful that this, this girl swears that she looks like that Victoria's Secret model. And the truth is that whether she does or not doesn't matter because at the end of the day, what she conveys and transmits to people is that confidence and that self love. And she teaches them through that how to love her in that manner as well. So whether she's physically that attractive or not doesn't matter because she's very attractive internally and she conveys that. So there's something that we call the imposter syndrome. And that's when you are successful or beautiful or they've given you a position that you never imagined you could get, or you have a relationship with somebody that you feel unworthy of. When you're in those predicaments and you feel like, who am I to be on this stage? Who am I to have people pay for this service? Who am I? Who's going to want to buy this, going to want to see me? Who's going to want to listen to me? Ask again because at the end of the day, if you believe that what you're doing is where you need to be and what you were created to do. Then whether you are the best speaker, the best boyfriend, girlfriend that have the most amazing body doesn't really matter. What matters is what you believe and what you tell yourself. Because all too often we already are in our greatness. And if we don't see it, if we don't acknowledge it, what good is that? Believe who you want to become. Believe that you're capable of the greatness that you are capable of. But you've lied to yourself and you don't think you are. And when you believe it, you will be it. So how do you believe it? Let's see. How did I. How do I do that? Lie to yourself. Tell yourself what you want to believe. Tell yourself I'm beautiful. I'm beautiful. I'm gorgeous. I have the Victoria's Secret body. I am an amazing physician. I'm successful. I'm bright. I have all these gifts to serve my community. I deserve a person that loves me the way that my partner does. I deserve to be on this stage, to be this successful. I deserve this. I am worthy of this. Tell yourself over and over again and you will trick your subconscious mind which believes whatever you tell it. And you will soon believe it and start acting accordingly. So what is better? Believing or being? Believe it and then you will be it. If this was helpful, please don't forget to like and subscribe. And for more resources, visit betterwithbetsy.com. Sa.
