Defining Oneness in Coaching

Betsy Guerra uses an ocean-and-waves metaphor to explain oneness: we're individual waves but part of one ocean. When you feel connected to everyone and everything, you treat people better, care for the environment more, and find spiritual strength in unity with God.

Today I'm going to define oneness. It's one of my favorite spiritual concepts, and it's universal across all the spiritual disciplines. Oneness says that we are one with God, our Creator, we're one with the universe, we're one with other people, we're one with nature. And as we see it with our own physical eyes, and we're like, no, we're not. We're separated. There's this person and there's that person. There's you, and there's the nature, and there's you and there's God. But hear me out. If you think of the ocean, and let's say you're playing with your kids and you're jumping on waves, and if you see a wave, that wave is apparently separate from the other wave that's coming behind it. And you're like, oh, there's one wave and there's another wave. And look, let's jump the third one. But in the end, when does the wave end and the ocean begin? The wave is the ocean and the ocean is the wave. But we as human beings who are wired to see reality through our senses, which are very limited, we see it as separated. And when we understand that we are one with the ocean, that we are one with the other wave, you're in a relationship with that. We are one with this nature that we get to protect. When we understand oneness, we become a better person for three reasons. Number one, if you acknowledge that you're one with those people that you don't necessarily like that much or who trigger you, you can be a better person. I know for me, it's worked a lot because sometimes there's someone who really annoys me, and I'm looking at them and I'm like, I'm one with you. I am you. I am one with you. And that helps me have the grace to treat that person with love and respect. So that's number one, you get to treat others with a whole lot of love as opposed to if you think of them separately and separate and different from you. Number two, it helps you be a better citizen of nature and the universe. When we know that we are one with the universe, we treat our environment a lot better. We're more mindful, we care more. We recycle, we reuse. We treat it with respect. And number three, when you believe in oneness, you also have a superpower, because think about it, a wave on its own. You know, you could break the wave, you could ride the wave. You could do a lot of things with that one wave. But when you think about the magnificence of the ocean, the greatness of the ocean, you don't stand a chance. And the same is true when you know that you're one with God. You can go through other problems and circumstances in life, and you may feel you don't have the strength or what it takes to overcome them. But when you remember you are the ocean, you are one with God, you are invincible. So I invite you to consider oneness as one of the gifts that you get to experience in life as you become the better version of yourself that God created you to be.
