Developing A Spiritual Practice

A brief YouTube talk by Betsy Guerra describing her daily spiritual routine to grow closer to God: a morning centering prayer (silence, solitude, stillness), listening to Scripture via an app, a short midday centering to re-ground, and an evening conscience examination (St. Ignatius) to reflect and set intentions. Ends with a call-to-action directing viewers to betterwithbetsy.com and to subscribe/share.

A lot of my clients ask how they can grow spiritually. And today I get to share with you what I do to become closer to God. Every morning, I start my day with a centering prayer. Centering prayer is a form of meditation for Christians where you consent to the presence and action of God within you. But essentially what you're practicing is the three S's, silence, solitude, and stillness. You are creating a space where you're just present. You're not letting your mind take over. You are consenting to God taking over you and your mind and your heart in that moment. And whether you're successful at concentrating and creating that silence in your mind or not, it doesn't matter, because the fact that you created that space for God, he knows your heart, he knows your intentions, and just that will lead to a deeper spirituality. Then I listen to the Bible. I believe that the Bible is the word of God, and I want to listen. So now that I'm in that state of silence and solitude and stillness, and I am all God's, I get to open my ears to His Word. And I use an app that reads the Scripture twice and very slowly in a meditative state, which allows me to really listen and to see what words or phrases pop out, to see what it is that God's trying to tell me. So that's my half an hour to 45 minutes. I go to the Blessed Sacrament to do that prayer. And then in the middle of the day, I practice another few minutes of centering prayer to get myself grounded by. Because usually my days are very hectic. So to be able to, like, re energize, I do a small. A brief meditation. And then at night I go to sleep. And when I'm in bed, I practice the conscience examination of St. Ignatius. What that is, is you reflect on your day. So you go back and you relive your day. And you pay attention to three things. Number one, you're looking for where was God in my day? Where were there blessings around that I may not have noticed because hindsight is 20 20. And then the second thing I'm looking for is when was I my best self? In what moments of my day did I behave like the person I am trying to rise up to be? And the last thing is, where is there room for improvement? Where was I not my best self? And I reflect on it and I ask for forgiveness. And I set that as an intention so that tomorrow I do better in that part that I wasn't so good at today. So morning you make space for silence. And you consent to God's presence and action so you can have an awesome day throughout. And then at night you reflect back on your day so that you can create awareness and grow spiritually.
