Short conversational transcript from a YouTube video by Betsy Guerra discussing how pain—though unpleasant—can catalyze growth. Speakers claim pain acts like fertilizer (though it "feels like poop"), motivates change, humbles people, provides perspective (via an anecdote about cancer), fosters empathy, and is foundational to personal growth (compared to muscle tearing and rebuilding).

I was in a session the other day and a client was sharing about.
Her struggles, and she kept on saying, I just want to be done with this painful experience. I want to be done. And I was like, embrace pain. Pain is awesome.
And she looked at me weird, like thinking, oh, gosh, I came to the wrong therapist. This woman's a masochist.
But pain is awesome. I know pain.
I know it from my failures, not.
Getting what I want, from losing the love of my life, my daughter. I know pain. And I also know the growth that comes from pain.
So I once heard this, and I.
Wish it was mine because I think it's brilliant, but it's not.
Pain is a fertilizer. What is fertilizer made of?
Poop. Pain feels like poop. It stinks like looks like it. But what does fertilizers do to plants? They make them grow.
They nourish them. Pain does the same for us.
Pain motivates us.
It makes us want to be out of that uncomfortable situation. So it motivates us to do better, to seek help.
Pain humbles us. When everything's going great, we are self.
Righteous and we know better than everybody, we're entitled.
But when we're in pain, we are humble, we accept help, we listen to others. Pain brings perspective.
I have a friend that while going.
Through cancer, she was in a lot of pain. And her dad was sitting there next to her and he told her, feel it, my love, feel the pain. Because one day you won't feel this pain and you'll remember this as a frame of reference. And everything else that happens will remind you like, this is painful. This doesn't feel good. But it's not as painful as that other experience. Pain brings perspective. It also makes you better because when you feel it, you're able to empathize with other people's pain. And pain is the foundation for growth.
We already spoke about the fertilizer, but.
We can also remember that for a muscle to grow stronger and to build up, it needs to tear down first.
And for us to go up, we have to go down for impulse first. So pain is that foundation for growth. Pain is awesome.
