Pain is AWESOME!

Betsy Guerra argues that pain drives change and growth. She uses examples like infidelity, illness, and career struggles to show how acute pain forces action and pushes people out of comfort zones. Her core idea: pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.

I want to tell you what I think about pain. Pain is awesome. Pain is awesome. And I'm going to tell you why. Pain is the foundation for change, for growth. Because pain creates such a discomfort that you will do anything to get out of it. Do I have to take a pill? Do I have to go to this doctor? Do I have to sleep and rest? What do I have to do to get rid of this pain? You want to get rid of pain when you experience it. So it moves you. It makes you want to act. It makes you want to make decisions that you were not ready for before. Pain is the foundation for growth. For example, you are going through a separation or there was infidelity in your marriage. And it hurts so much. It hurts so much. And you're thinking things that you thought you would never even consider. How can I forgive my spouse for this? How can I love him or her again? What can I do to save my family? You want to act because it hurts so badly that you want to get rid of that. And the easy out, the easy decision, which is just walking away suddenly, is not that easy anymore. So pain forces you to get out of your comfort zone and do things that were unimaginable for you before. Let's say you're sick, you have a disease that may not allow you to live for too long. Then that pain of having to go through that allows you to value the people around you. It makes you appreciate every moment of your life. It makes you do things that you didn't do before because you were so prideful. It helps you forgive. It helps you look at life with a different outlook. Pain, when you use it as a tool, not as a lifestyle, is awesome. And what do I mean by that? Some people dwell in pain and they want to stay in pain, and they don't use it as a tool, as an instrument to move out of it. It's almost. They become a victim and those people suffer. And I love this quote. Pain is inevitable. Suffering is optional. And when you use pain the right way, when you use it to grow, to become better, to change your perspective, to do the unimaginable during that time, pain is awesome. So whatever pain you're going through now, whether it's you're in debt and you're drowning in financial difficulties, or you're struggling in your marriage, or you can't get that promotion that you've been working on so hard for, or you don't know what to do with your life, you don't know what you want, you don't know what you're going to study. You don't know what you're going to do in terms of your career. Whatever your pain is right now, if you're having issues with your family members, it doesn't matter. Use it. Use it to get rid of the pain. Use that to motivate you to change the way you're interacting with those circumstances or individuals. Use it to grow to become better. Seek help if you need to. Use your pain. Pain is awesome because pain also allows you to feel it so that when you're not in that position anymore you can look back and see and think wow I'm so grateful that I'm not feeling that pain. Or when you feel another pain, a different pain, you can think of this one and be like I'm in pain but it's not nearly as hard and painful as that other one. Pain brings perspective so it brings perspective, it brings strength and it brings growth. Use it. Don't waste pain.
