Teens Group

Betsy Guerra runs an 8-week teen group that ends with a graduation. One parent saw her son Liam have deeper conversations at home, show more respect, and correct negative peer perceptions after attending. The group includes a mall field trip where teens talk to a janitor about perspective-taking.

So I really wanted Liam to join the teen group with Betsy because I've heard so much about it for so many years now, and I really thought it would be the perfect opportunity for him to learn some of the life skills that even though as a parent, I try to teach him, because it's coming from me, it's not always going to be, let's say, accepted. And Betsy has just done such a great job at developing week by week and building on the foundation from week one to week two, all the way through week eight. And even with the graduation ceremony of pulling it all together, one of the things I've seen in Liam is he and I have always had a great communication relationship, but it's almost like we're able now to take the subject in a deeper sense. So, for example, I've always talked to him about how everyone, regardless of the type of job that they have, even the janitor, should be treated with respect. And one of the things that Betsy did was she took them on a field trip to the mall, and they actually, believe it or not, were speaking to a janitor. And after that, Liam was talking to me about, you know, mom, I had a chance to talk with him, and he talked with our group, and he gave us his perspective. And you know what? He was a pretty cool guy, and I loved that because it reinforced some of the values and the life skills we're trying to do at home. I would highly recommend this for anyone. It has really helped Liam get further validation in terms of what he's thinking, what he's doing, and actually helped him change some of his behaviors. So when he came into this, there were some negative perceptions of him by some of the other kids based on some of the things he had said and done before. And he learned about that in this group. He learned how to adjust his behavior, and he learned the impact that his behavior was having from a negative consequence and turn that into a positive one. So I could just go on and on about all the wonderful things that he's learned that we've learned in the process as well. I would highly recommend this to anyone. Your child does not have to be going through an issue in order to come to this. It truly is about life skills and building for the future. Thank you.
