Austin Valdes describes how a group experience shifted his perspective. He learned reframing techniques and communication skills, developed deeper empathy for others, and formed close bonds with peers who felt like family by the end.

The group helped me realize that people not other than myself are going through problems of their own and that everyone has their own problems in life and it's not only me. Like, I'm just starting to see life differently now and, like, respecting other people and like, and even if they're, like, having an off day and like, they're like, mistreating someone, like, being mean or something, I just got to think to yourself that, oh, they're probably having a bad day, or, like, oh, they're probably just going through a lot of stuff in their life at the moment. And we just, like, starting to respect people and we're starting to learn a lot of tools that we could use in life. And not only tools to help us become a better person, but someone to help others. The top three things that I learned that help a lot in my life, that is like an everyday thing that I use is reframing, which is when you get, like, a negative situation and you turn the way that you look at it in another perspective and just, it's like a different, like, say, like you, like, lost your toy. Well, maybe like, you lost your toy for a reason and so you could get another one or something like that. And communication is, like, different skills of, like, talking to someone and like, getting to know how they feel and, like, reflecting off of how they feel. And another thing that I learned in the group as well that we could use in our everyday lives are the subconscious mind, which is a super powerful thing that not a lot of people know. But you could tell yourself that you could do something. Even if you know that you can't just tell your mind that you could, and maybe that you can end up doing it and you don't even know it. Say that you're scared of planes. You can just tell yourself that you love planes and your mind won't even be afraid of it anymore. I recommend this group a lot for teens our age is because we can actually reflect to everything that us teens are going through. And it's not even like a thing like, oh, if you come here, you're not cool. If you come here, it's boring. It's not my thing. You don't even know if it's your thing. If you can't try, you got to try it first. And I guarantee you after the first meeting, you're going to be like, oh, wow, this is literally something that I've never thought. It's not therapy. People join this group of strangers not knowing about anything or anyone about their present life or their past. And after each meeting, we start getting to know each other more. And by the end of the last meeting, we end up leaving as family and loving each other and wanting to hang out with each other every day.
