The Ultimate Joy Guide!

Betsy Guerra explains reframing, a technique for finding positives in hard situations by shifting your mental perspective. She shows how it worked when her children were hospitalized and how it can transform a controlling partner into someone caring, all without changing what actually happened.

You've heard it many times. Just change your perspective. Change the way you look at it. How the heck do we do that? The answer is reframing. If you reframe, you are able to change the way you look at anything. And without anything around you, changing, everything can change just by reframing. What is reframing? Think of your grandma and that beautiful piece of art with the Florida Key sunset. Like, it was a picture that had a terrible frame. It was Victorian and gold, and it had, like, black parts. It was just so ugly. And you were like, oh, gosh, do I have to put that up? It's so nasty. But then you really want to please your grandma, so you go to a frame shop and they put on the most modern, beautiful frame. In fact, you paid thousands of dollars for that, and you put it up. And suddenly the same piece of art, the same Florida Key sunset that was so ugly in that frame, becomes the most beautiful art piece in your living room, in your house. And everybody has something to talk about it. We don't have to change the piece of art. We don't have to change our circumstances. We don't have to change people. We don't have to change what we're going through. To be able to change everything, to be able to look at it from a different standpoint, you just have to change the frame. So I always tell my clients, you need to reframe, because reframing is going to allow you to move on, to move forward, to look at that aspect that you weren't focusing on. That's going to help you grow and become a better version of yourself. Refrain. Let me give you an example. I was in the hospital. My oldest daughter was hospitalized with pneumonia, and the little one was still a baby. She was months old, and she had RSV and was in the emergency room. And I was so overwhelmed. And at one point, I'm like, betsy, what's reframe? Reframe. What's positive about all this doesn't come easy at the beginning. You just frame with the ugly Victorian frame. You just think of the words. You think you're miserable. You feel like a victim. You cannot see anything positive. That's okay. So I went to the waiting room, and I sat there and I'm like, reframe, Reframe. Think about something positive. And I thought, okay, I have insurance. Insurance is going to pay for my daughter's well being, for their health, for the treatment. I have money to pay for the copay. It's pretty cool. The hospital is just a couple blocks from my house. There are people in this world that can never go to the hospital because there's not one close by or they don't have the means to get there. I have three people right now with my three children, and they're being taken care of because I have this amazing support network. I am healthy, which means that I can be here taking care of my daughters because I'm not gonna give them any disease that I may have. And I'm gonna walk out of here in just a couple of days with my healthy girls because my kids don't have something too serious that means that they may not even walk out of here with me. Refrain there's always something positive that you can look at. Some blessing in any tragedy. In the worst of the situations, there's always something beautiful that you can look at, that underlying beauty. So reframe with your partner. Oh my gosh. My spouse is so controlling and he always wants to be with me and he's always calling and he's driving me crazy. How about he loves me so much that he wants to be with me all the time. He enjoys my presence. There's nothing else in this world that he loves more than being with me. There's other women out there whose spouse doesn't care about them and is always working or is going out having an affair with another person or prefers to be out drinking with the buddies rather than home with the family. I have a pretty good problem. Then when you look at it from that standpoint, reframe. Nothing has to change around you for everything to change. If you just look at the underlying beauty and a different perspective to the one that you're focusing on.
