Today I'm going to tell you what motherhood taught me about love. When people asked me what I loved about being a mom, I used to say it was the tiny hands with which my daughters would, like, embrace me. They thought they were embracing the whole me, but it was just my neck or the sleepless night during which I was so frustrated with the breastfeeding and the diaper changes and all these things. But then I would see their eyes and their smile and forget all about it. Or just seeing them in a Christmas show and enjoying their successes in life and witnessing they're becoming into their own little individuals. Or maybe it's just seeing kindness in my children and hearing other people say how amazing they are and how loving and generous my kids are, all those things. But when you are the mother of an angel and you don't get to feel her little hands anymore and her kisses and her caresses, and you don't get to see her radiant and smiling and beautiful or hear her say the cutest things ever, what do you love about being a mom? How do you love a person that you cannot hold in your arms? And motherhood and loss taught me that love is timeless. I adore my angel. I adore Fofi. She's in heaven. I don't get to see her. I don't get to feel her. But I love her with all my heart. And she doesn't have to do anything to earn my love. I love her. And I feel that motherhood has taught me how human beings who are so limited, can experience such a grand emotion and something so powerful, like that unconditional love that I have for my daughter. And I feel that every mother should rethink their love for their children and remember that it doesn't matter what they do. I have a quote with my kids, and every time I started, they complete it. I say, no matter what you do, and they go, mommy loves you. No matter what they do, I love them. I can't think of something that my kids can do for me to stop loving them. So motherhood has taught me that love is timeless, that it's unconditional. And that even when our children don't meet our expectations and are not becoming the individuals we wanted them to become, we love them. And whether they do something to deserve it or not doesn't matter. It's unconditional. It's timeless. It defeats death. It's forever.
