What To Do When Taking Care Of Others Is Taking Away From Your Life

Betsy Guerra argues that loving others shouldn't cost you your own wellbeing. She frames self-care through the Christian commandment to love your neighbor as yourself, urging you to fill your cup first so you can actually serve others.

What to do when taking care of others is taking away from your life. Are you the kind of person who is always putting other people's well being ahead of yours? You're always giving and giving and giving and doing for others and you prioritize everything from everybody else, oftentimes at your cost. It is good and noble and kind to be of service to others. But let me remind you something. The commandment, the most important commandment in the Bible is love God above all things and thy neighbor as thyself. It doesn't say love your neighbors at your cost. It says love them as you love yourself. Because you are God. God is within you. So you get to start at home. You get to be light at home and your home is you. You get to love yourself so that then you might pour that love to other people. And I'm not saying take care of yourself first, be selfish, you know, worry about you and don't care about anybody else. I'm not saying that. I'm saying that you get to be of service, but never at your cost. I don't think that's what God wanted for you. So whenever you feel like no, because I'm taking care of this one and I'm the one who takes care of my mom who has Alzheimer's and who's sick and, and I have to go and, and help my parents and, and my husband and my, and my wife and my kids and. And I can't. I don't have time for me and I can't work out and I can't pray and I can't meditate because I'm too busy doing for everybody else in my family. Love thy neighbor as thyself. Remember that you get to give yourself more and better when you're full. So you know you cannot pour from an empty cup. So fill your cup and remember how lovely and special you are to God and treat yourself as you treat your neighbors because that's what you were called to to do.
