This short YouTube segment (speaker: Betsy Guerra) explains how coaching helps people find happiness by recognizing that contradictory emotions can co-exist. Using everyday examples (childbirth; a child leaving for college) she presents the core metaphor that emotions are like two sides of a coin — focusing on one side drowns out the other — and offers the practical suggestion that changing focus can flip you toward joy. The clip ends with a brief call-to-action (share/subscribe and a link to betterwithvetsy.com).

Today I'm going to share why coaching helps you find happiness. My clients often ask, is it normal that I'm feeling two opposite emotions at once? And then I ask them, is it normal that a woman who's giving birth can have a lot of pain and be really joyful at the same time? Is it normal that so a parent whose child is going off to college can feel a lot of pride and very happy for the child, but be super crushed and sad that they're leaving the house. Is it possible to experience two opposite emotions at the same time? Emotions are not dualistic and we think of them as opposites. But the truth is, emotions are like a coin. In one same coin, you have heads and tails. And when you're paying attention, when you're looking at heads, you can't see tails, but tails is there. You can be both joyful and sad. You can be excited and scared. You can be faithful and full of doubt. You can experience it all because it's two sides of the coin. What happens though, is that when you are focusing on joy, then you're drowning out sadness. When you're focusing on heads, you can't see tails. When you're focusing on excitement and joy, you're drowning out the fear. So next time you're experiencing some emotion that's unpleasant and is robbing you of your peace, remember that all you have to do is change your focus and joy and happiness is just a flip of a coin away.
