Blair Singer delivers a short motivational talk (YouTube) warning against comparing yourself to others—especially harmful in coaching/training. He explains comparison is learned early (school, family), argues that while content or methods may not be unique, each person’s story and journey are, and recommends operating from that uniqueness so comparison disappears and authentic teaching/leading emerges.
Have you ever played the comparison game with yourself? Do you know what I'm talking about? It's when you start comparing yourself to somebody else that's maybe more successful, has better results than you do, particularly can be devastating in the training and coaching business. Hi, my name is Blair Singer. Some of you may know me as Rich dad advisor Robert Kiyosaki. But over the last 30 years I've worked with entrepreneurs in over 40 countries, helping them increase sales, build championship teams and win the war between their ears. But over the last 10 years, mostly focused on helping people with important experience and knowledge to share to become world class teachers, leaders and facilitators. Why? Because the world needs them. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure that out. Now let's go back to my question. Have you ever compared yourself? And if the answer is yes, that's not good. So what do you do? Why does that happen? That happens because we're taught at a very early age in school to compare ourselves with Johnny and Mary, who have better grades or better athletes and we don't measure up to our brothers and sisters and be like your father and all those crazy things that go on in our heads. Right? So here's what I'm going to tell you. Your message may not be any different than somebody else's. It may not be unique. Your content, whatever you're delivering, that may not be unique either. There may be thousands of people teaching people how to sell, teaching people how to invest, whatever it is that you're teaching or coaching. But what is unique is you and your story and where you come from. So your story is different the way you got there. Everybody's journey is different. Number one, hopefully your methodology is somewhat different in the way you deliver it. But who you are as a spiritual being, who you are as a person, is totally unique. And when you learn to operate from that space, comparison goes away. All you do is initiate, all you do is create. All you do is respond to what the need is in front of you and be able to allow your audience to allow the world to pull from you and you pull from them. At that point, you're now in a magic golden zone. So stop comparing. Not good for you, not good for your head, not good for your business. Not good for anything. Remember, you are unique and nobody can compare to you. Some journeys are longer, some journeys are shorter. Some are meteoric. Some take a long time to get there. Some learn the easy way, some learn the hard way. Either way, your story is worth telling.
