Don’t build a team, build a code! For more go to our website!

Blair Singer argues that teams need a shared code of honor, not just assembled people. A code reduces drama, boosts performance by ensuring members have each other's back, and builds strong culture.
A team without a code of honor is simply a bunch of people wearing the same T shirt. Hate to tell you that, but that's the truth. Rather than focusing so much on trying to build the team, why don't you focus on getting the team and yourself to build a code of honor? A set of rules based on values that live beyond your team, beyond the team members that may outlast all of us on this team. It's what every great culture has done throughout history. Think of the ten commandments, the precepts of Buddhism. All of all religions have had their own code of honor. And great organizations do it, too. Why? Because it reduces the drama. Because we're all on the same page. Remember the values. Number two, it increases performance because everybody knows that everybody else has got everybody else's back. And number three, the other part of it is it's the most powerful element of building a culture. Of building a culture. Again, I can't emphasize the number of times that my teams have bailed me out. Not because of me, not because of the personalities of the team, but because they had something bigger than all of us called a code of honor that held us together and allowed us to over allowed us to overcome adversity and be awesome performers. So don't focus on so much on the team. Get the team to create the code. You'll be amazed at the results. Be amazing.
