A short motivational excerpt by Blair Singer contrasting two leadership styles: the 'dictator' who simply gives orders and the 'facilitator' who asks questions to draw out others' brilliance. Singer argues that while dictators may be expedient when tired or impatient, true championship teams and dynamic classes are built by facilitation and inquiry.
Are you a facilitator or are you a dictator? What's the difference? Dictator just dictates. This is what we're going to do. This is how we're going to do it. No questions asked. But to be a great facilitator requires asking lots of questions. Pulling the brilliance from your team. Pulling the brilliance from the room. Everybody wants to be a great facilitator and pull the best of other people. But sometimes we get tired, sometimes we get frustrated, sometimes we're out of time. We have lack of patience. We're just going to dictate to them what we want. But at the end of the day, if you want a championship team, if you want a class that comes to life, if you want to uncover people's genius and brilliance, ask questions. Be a facilitator, not a dictator.
