This is a short excerpt from a Blair Singer YouTube talk about keeping audiences engaged online or offline. The speaker states human attention typically drops after about 30–90 seconds and again around eight to nine minutes, and recommends interactive tactics: ask questions early and often (roughly every minute), invite chat responses (e.g., type "me"), and tell stories to regain attention.
Do you want to know how to.
Keep an audience engaged online or offline? Check this out. Okay. Have you ever noticed as you're looking across your zoom call or looking out into the audience, people are checked out, checking their watches, not even present? Yes. Why? Here's why. It's not because of you. It's not because of your content. So let all that little voice crap go away. The reason is, is the normal attention span of a human being is about 30 to 90 seconds. That's the first drop off. The second drop off is from like about eight or nine minutes. It drops off again. So if you're working against all of that, how do you keep them engaged? Okay, remember, it's not about you. So here's how you do it. Ask a question. The simplest thing you could do. Ask questions early and often, like every minute or so. Ask a question like, have you ever done this? Have you ever done that?
If you have, type in.
Me in the chat box. Does that make sense? Type in Ms. In the chat box. If you want more, type in bio, anything. Tell a story.
