Blair Singer lays out three steps to bounce back from setbacks: own what happened and stop the self-talk, return to the routines that worked before, and swap anger for compassion so you don't wreck your relationships in the process.
Does it take you days, weeks, maybe even months to come back from a setback? Maybe even longer than that? Or would you like to come back quick and strong and positive? That's what I thought. Okay, so here's how you do it. Three steps. Third one, most important, and not what you would expect. Number one, whatever happened that set you back, just own it. Take personal responsibility. Whether it's your fault or not, it just gets rid of all the chatter in your brain. Just own it, number one. Number two, go back to the disciplines that you probably left out. Your morning disciplines, your physical disciplines, all the eating disciplines, all the things that you're really good about that got you where you are. Chances are you skip some, get back and put them in place immediately. And number three, most important, instead of anger, frustration, pity, and all the other stuff that goes with your bad mood from the setback, replace it with love and compassion. That's right, love and compassion. Because who are the people that take the most brunt when you're in a bad mood? It's people closest to you, and they don't deserve.
