A short motivational talk by Blair Singer on overcoming procrastination. The speaker reframes procrastination as a pattern of self-talk and prioritization errors—placing trivial tasks ahead of important personal goals—and urges listeners to stop labeling themselves as chronic procrastinators and to clarify what truly matters. Early advice includes examining who wants you to act and why.
How do you get procrastination out of your life once and for all? Okay, first thing, stop telling yourself that you procrastinate all the time, because it's just not true. I always procrastinate. No, you don't stop telling yourself that, because if you keep telling yourself that, you might start believing it, which then creates another whole set of problems. Okay, number two, procrastination is actually taking something that's important and putting something trivial in front of it. Explain you want to build a business, write a book, have a great relation, get in great physical shape, whatever these things are that are important to you for your life and for your living. And then you decide you want to clean your garage in the meantime or you want to go out and partying and you'll get to it later. Now what you're doing is you're devaluing yourself. You're putting these trivial things that are in front of the things that are more of an extension of who you are and who you could become. So stop doing that. A couple other things to keep in mind when you're taking a look at the thing you want to do. Who wants you to do it, why do they want you to do it?
