Blair Singer shares a retired three-star Marine Corps general's approach to recruiting: offer membership in something bigger than yourself and promise personal growth. Money matters less than these two things.
One of the greatest leadership lessons I ever learned was from a retired three star general from the United States Marine Corps. Now you got to ask yourself if you can promise this. I asked him, how do you recruit young people, put them in harm's way, work their tails off and don't pay them hardly anything. How do you do that in the Marine Corps? He said it's easy. He says, just understand that the generations that are in the workforce right now want two things. Number one, they want to be part of something bigger than themselves so they know that they can make a difference, that their lives mean something, and they want to trust whoever their leaders are. The second thing is they figure if they can become a Marine and qualify, they will become the best version of themselves. They'll become the person they've always hoped they could be. Now, whether you have money or no money, can you promise those two things? If you can, you'll never have a problem recruiting. Be amazing.
